Safety first for Lincolnshire care home

As part of a programme of improvements for its care homes across the country, a prestigious residential care home provider used HOPPE (UK) products to ensure its property in Tallington, Lincolnshire was up to standard.

Originally a stone rectory, the building’s conversion to a care home followed by three decades of alterations had taken away the building’s historic charm. Country Court Care enlisted the help of MV Construction to refurbish the existing property and construct a new building on-site.

“Regulations are changing so a lot of existing care homes have fallen behind the standards expected by residents,” said Roger Vernon, contract manager at MV Construction. “Country Court Care caters for private and local authority residents and builds to a very high standard. The safety and well-being of the residents is paramount so updating the care home is more than just the aesthetics.”

The project was split into three phases. Phase one began in June 2016 and involved the construction of the new building to house 30 residents. This was completed in September 2017.

A meeting with Peter Edwards, sales manager for Middleton Hardware, led to the majority of door hardware in the care home being supplied by HOPPE (UK).

Peter said:
“Making sure you meet the recommendations outlined in the Equality Act and all fire regulations are the two most important things when it comes to picking hardware for care homes. They need door hardware that is easy for residents to operate but still looks nice. With this in mind, we knew HOPPE (UK) products would do everything we wanted.”

Peter specified the HOPPE AR361/60 Paris handle in stainless steel. These handles have been fire tested alongside the mortice night latches so are suitable for use on fire doors and also meet the recommendations of BS 8300 so can be operated easily by hand or elbow.

For the residents’ bedroom doors, Peter advised the use of AR915 apartment sash locks. The doors can be locked from the inside but residents can get out quickly and easily by simply pressing down on the lever handle from the inside. A key is required to get in from the outside, giving residents privacy while keeping them safe.

The AR915 has also been included in a successful fire test to BS EN1634 Part 1 so it is suitable for use on 30 and 60 minute timber fire doors and 240 minute steel doors. In addition to the standard CE marking, the AR915 is CERTIFIRE approved. It also meets the dimensional recommendations of BS8300 and Approved Document M for locks.

The door hardware in care homes plays a key role in safety and security. It’s important that certain areas of a care home, such as drugs cabinets, can only be accessed by authorised staff. A master key system was installed to provide staff with a convenient solution that helps to enhance security at all times.

Roger is planning to use HOPPE products for other care home projects across the UK.
“We would definitely work with HOPPE (UK) products again, they ticked all the boxes. We’re actually using the exact same specification on another care home we’re working on in Nottingham,” said Roger.
Phase two is currently underway and is focussing on the renovation the existing building. Once all of the works are complete the care home will be able to house 62 residents.
