Motoring Milestone: The 125th Anniversary of the Historic Emancipation Run.

This year’s RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run (Sunday 7 November) marks a very special milestone in motoring and lifestyle history: The 125th anniversary of the historic Emancipation Run.

It was on 14 November 1896 that a group of enthusiastic early motorists set off from London to Brighton to celebrate the passing of the Locomotives on Highway Act which increased the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph and laid the ghost to the need for vehicles to be preceded by a man waving a red warning flag. The new government legislation was an epoch-defining watershed, effectively ending centuries of horse-drawn transport and giving motorists the freedom of the road.

“It was a seminal moment in time,” explains Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, the organisation which has curated what is now the world’s longest-running motoring event since 1930. “The new law was a life-changer in so many ways – it totally transformed the perspectives of social mobility and personal freedoms and, of course, spawned exciting new industries. It’s this key turning point in our history that was originally hailed by those visionary trailblazers on the very first Emancipation Run and which we continue to celebrate today. Nevermore so than in special anniversary years such as this.”

To mark the momentous occasion, more than 320 pioneering ‘horseless carriages’ from the dawn of motoring will leave Hyde Park in London at sunrise (07:06am) on Sunday morning and make the same 60-mile journey as those prophetic early motorists had done 125 years earlier from the capital city to the resort town of Brighton on the Sussex coast.

Magically encapsulating the sights, sounds and smells of the past, every vehicle dates back to pre-1905 – some powered by embryonic combustion engines, others by steam and electricity as ambitious engineers accelerated innovation.

Several of the makes represented – such as Fiat, Renault, Peugeot, Daimler, Vauxhall and Mercedes – will be familiar to today’s motorists. But there are plenty of long-forgotten marques there, too: Napoleon, Yale, Dennis, Flint, Maxwell, Star, Lambert and Gladiator to name but a few. The oldest car lining up in Hyde Park will be an intrepid single-cylinder 1894 Benz.

As ever, the historic event’s unique charisma has attracted a large number of well-known personalities and international entries with more than 50 participants travelling from overseas to be part of this year’s celebrations.

Notably, the fastest man on Earth, Andy Green OBE, will be debuting his newly acquired steam-propelled 1904 Stanley. The World Land Speed Record holder, however, will be travelling at somewhat subdued speeds when compared to the 760mph he topped in Thrust SSC back in 1997 to become the first person to break the sound barrier on terra firma!

After the symbolic pre-dawn tearing up of the red flag, Green will be among the hordes of remarkable cars and well wrapped-up crews being flagged away from Hyde Park as the sun rises at 7.06am.

Preceded by a number of plucky veteran cyclists and motorcyclists, three- and four-wheelers will depart for the coast at first light to the delight of the hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the route to cheer on the hardy participants.

After leaving Hyde Park (the traditional starting point since 1936), the veterans will drive through Admiralty Arch, down Constitution Hill, past Buckingham Palace and onto the Mall, before heading down Whitehall to Parliament Square.

Then, to alleviate congestion and give participants a more pleasurable drive out of the city, the route will split into two with half the field crossing Westminster Bridge and taking the traditional A23 route via Kennington, Brixton and Streatham. The other half will cross the Thames via the neighbouring Lambeth Bridge and then follow the A3, A24, A217 and A236 over Clapham Common and then through Tooting and Mitcham.

The two routes will then merge once again on the A236 north of Croydon with all cars reunited as they head south through Surrey.

Adding extra interest, the route between Croydon and Redhill also includes the A. Lange & Söhne Regularity Time Trial; the only competitive element of the event which requires drivers to get as close to a chosen average speed as possible.

After Burgess Hill, the Run tackles the scenic but demanding roads through the villages of the Sussex South Downs, passing through Hassocks and Clayton where pubs will be raising funds for Ben, the charity dedicated to supporting the people of the automotive industry.

The route thereafter joins the A23 for the final run into Brighton and the welcome finish – plus a hard-earned hot toddy courtesy of Aberfeldy single malt whisky – on Madeira Drive.

Aside from the start, timings are approximate. The first car is due at the Madeira Drive finish shortly after 10am while, to be sure of a finishers’ medal to celebrate a punctual arrival at Brighton, participants need to make it to the seafront before the 4.30pm curfew.

Aside from the paddocks at Hyde Park and Madeira Drive, the organisers have suggested the following locations as popular viewing points:
  • 6:45am                           Ceremonial Tearing of Red Flag, Hyde Park, London
  • 7:06am                           The start, Hyde Park, London
  • 7:06am – 8:25am           Constitution Hill, London
  • 7:06am – 8:25am           The Mall, London
  • 7:06am – 8:25am           Whitehall, London
  • 7:15am – 8:35am           Westminster Bridge, London
  • 7:15am – 8:35am           Lambeth Palace, London
  • 7:15am – 8:35am           Clapham Common, London
  • 7:15am – 8:35am           Lambeth Palace, London
  • 7:30am – 9:55am           Mitcham, London
  • 7:40am – 11:10am         Coulsdon High Street, London
  • 7:44am – 11:10am         Merstham, Surrey
  • 8:00am – 11:40am         Redhill, Surrey
  • 8:30am – 2:15pm          Handcross High Street, Sussex
  • 8:35am – 2:20pm          Staplefield village, Sussex
  • 8:55am – 2:40pm          Cuckfield High Street, Sussex
  • 10:06pm – 4:30pm        Brighton, Sussex

“Seeing all these lovingly maintained cars is more than a spectacle – it’s a piece of living history; a reminder of the fearless motoring pioneers who, literally, paved the way for all of us,” concluded Cussons who will be driving a 1901 Mors entered by the Royal Automobile Club.

The RM Sotheby’s Veteran Car Run brings the curtain down on the Club’s annual London Motor Week – seven days filled with a whole range of functions and events to suit all motoring tastes topped by the free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show plus the prestigious RM Sotheby’s London Sale auction on Saturday 6 November. Some events are open to the public while others are invitation only.

Further information on all the participants entering this year’s milestone 125th-anniversary event, as well as full route and other details, are available on the official website:  www.veterancarrun.com

Also included is a link to the shop where a limited edition signed poster commemorating the 125th anniversary Run and accompanying postcard pack are available via the ‘motoring’ section navigation.

Yale launches Lockmaster 21 Stable Door Lock

Yale has responded to the increasing trend for stable door functionality in more contemporary settings as well as cottages and farmhouses with the launch of its new Lockmaster 21 Stable Door Lock.

Made specifically for PVC and composite stable doors, the lock is a combination of Yale’s recently launched Lockmaster 21 multi-point door lock and its Lockmaster Keyturn key-operated multi-point lock for doors with a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. This enables it to provide the highest levels of security, style and functionality.

The Lockmaster 21 Stable Door Lock has been designed, developed and tested with Shepley, the leading trade window and composite door fabricator, to enable them to deliver the very best performance.

The stable door lock has been designed to achieve PAS 24:2016 security as standard when incorporated as part of a doorset – demonstrating that it has satisfied a range of criteria to prove it can resist common methods of attack from burglars.

Its impeccable security is aided by the signature Lockmaster hook and anti-lift pin on both the top and bottom leaf, maintaining the hardware story across multiple door styles offered by the majority of fabricators. It also features an easy-to-use push-in snib feature to prevent accidental lock-outs.

The range includes 35mm and 45mm backsets, is available with or without rollers, and comes with a two-piece keep that makes installation easier.

It is tested to 240 hours of corrosion resistance (Grade 4) and features a faceplate made of 430 stainless with Yale branding.

Tony Ball, Sales Director at Shepley, comments:
“We were pleased to work with Yale on the development of the Lockmaster 21 Stable Door Lock, providing our expertise to help ensure that testing and functionality are of the highest possible standard. The final product is an excellent addition to the market, and will enhance both our own range of stable doors and other stable doors across the industry.”

Paul Atkinson, Managing Director at Yale, adds:
“The new Lockmaster 21 Stable Door Lock is a long anticipated, welcome addition to our range, enabling us to offer an outstanding solution for composite, timber and PVC stable door sets, which are now a popular choice in modern settings as well as more traditional ones.
“The range provides all the security and compliance benefits that people expect from our Lockmaster line, while seamlessly fitting in with the aesthetics of stable doors. In this way, it provides the ultimate lock solution for fabricators and installers of stable doors.”

JD (UK)’s Digitally Printed Natural Woods prove a Big Hit

The Trend series of sectional garage door from Alutech has been without a doubt JD (UK) LTD’s best-seller. But when the sole UK distributor of Alutech products launched a digital print option for the Trend in June 2021, previously only available on the Prestige door, it gave this old favourite a new lease of life and boosted sales in the process, on track to double the initial sales forecast!

The specialised industrial digital printing technology allows the application of complex images onto the door leaf, making it possible to bring the homeowner’s most imaginative and personalised design ideas to life, as well as offering a wide selection of natural wood and stone effects.

As anticipated, of the four digital print options available, the natural wood prints have proven a sure-fire hit, offering a unique finish for those who appreciate the beauty and authenticity of nature.

Similarly, the natural stone prints that mimic the patterns found in real stone and marble have also been popular. JD (UK) LTD has also seen an increase in the popularity of the Panoramic series of sectional garage door, with its modern design of fully acrylic glazed panels.

Homeowners can also opt for an image of their choice printed on the door panel set or choose from the many themed prints Alutech offers, from categories such as nature, landscapes and vehicle themes.

Jason Wade, JD UK National Sales Manager, commented:
“We were excited to be finally able to offer the innovative digital print option on what is our most popular door, the Trend. We’re increasingly seeing that homeowners no longer want to imitate the style of their neighbours, but rather differentiate their property with something that is truly unique to them.

The digital printing technology allows them to achieve exactly that and we knew it would be a big hit.”

What Fabricators need to know about Anodised Aluminium

Aluminium is known for being a versatile metal. Flexible, strong and corrosion resistant; it’s the ideal building material.

It is also significantly more environmentally friendly than other metals as it is 100% recyclable. This means that carbon savings increase each time it is recycled and making it an increasingly popular choice for doors and windows.

Although aluminium can withstand weathering better than other metals, it can still tarnish and oxidise over time if it does not receive additional treatment. One of the best ways to protect and enhance the appearance is by giving it an anodised finish.

HOPPE has been using anodised finishes for its aluminium door and window hardware for over 35 years. This finish is created by using an electrolytic process which enhances its natural qualities making it even more durable.

No additional covering is applied, it simply creates a layer that is built up from the existing aluminium that is fully integrated with the metal substrate.

This increases its abrasion resistance and helps the product to retain its appearance which is particularly useful in high traffic areas.

Corrosion resistance

Anodising hardware also increases corrosion resistance. Ironmongery affected by corrosion will become tarnished or discoloured.

Anodised finishes are suitable for external applications even in coastal locations. HOPPE’s popular external door handles, the Atlanta and Tokyo, are available with anodised finishes as a profile or security set.

HOPPE brand name products are tested to ensure flawless operation. These tests closely reflect the everyday knocks hardware has to take and extend beyond the requirements of technical standards such as DIN EN 1906.

As part of HOPPE’s commitment to high quality products, all HOPPE handles have a 10-year mechanical operation guarantee, as long as assembly and maintenance guidelines are followed.

Design choice
When the anodising process takes place, there is also the opportunity to alter the final finish. Popular finishes include silver and gold colours to complement traditional hardware finishes not only for entrance doors, but also around the home.

As part of HOPPE’s duranorm® range there are internal door handles that also offer an anodised finish. The Dubayy, Seattle and Ibiza series all have a contemporary handle design to match a range of interiors. All three of these handle series are available in silver colour and polished chrome.

Finding hardware for aluminium window and door systems
HOPPE (UK) has launched a leaflet that will help aluminium window and door manufacturers looking to specify compatible hardware for their products.

Andy Matthews, head of sales at HOPPE (UK), said:
“We have collated a selection of high-quality products that are compatible with aluminium window and doors systems both in terms of design and aesthetics.
The leaflet does not just cover handles, we’ve also included panic hardware and door closers to offer suitable solutions for all applications.”
To get a free copy of the leaflet, contact Andy on andy.matthews@hoppe.com or 01902 484 400.

Improving Building Hygiene – Where Does Door Hardware Fit In?

Daniel May, Director at Consort Architectural Hardware, discusses the role door hardware plays in improving hygiene within public building environments.

Health and hygiene are delicate themes, particularly in today’s settings. Both our homes and public building environments can have a huge impact on our wellbeing, and over the past few years, this fact has only been exemplified.

Eighty percent of common infections are spread by touch and every 30 minutes, the average person is said to touch surfaces that expose them to 840,000 germs. These germs are prevalent in buildings too, where touchpoints are areas or items that are used by several individuals. Within workplace environments for example, door handles are the most touched surface and can be associated with cross-contamination and health risks.

At present, the need to improve hygiene within our building environments, understandably, carries a greater significance than it maybe once did. But in truth, when it comes to building design, the process of protecting occupants and visitors against infection - especially those most vulnerable - should never be overlooked.

Design for Bacteria Control

Over the past two years, we’ve seen building environments closed, reopened and the process repeated. The idea of reducing footfall in facilities was key in fighting the rising infection rates associated with the coronavirus. But now, that footfall has returned.

Once again, those critical touchpoints such as door handles are harbouring germs. In fact, research has shown that the coronavirus can survive on surfaces for hours, and even days on metal door handles - and the same can be said for the common flu.

In response, we’ve seen government campaigns promoting hand washing, sanitising and distance-making in the wake of a return to public facilities. Undoubtedly, infection control methods such as hand washing and systematic cleaning are the most guaranteed way of controlling cross-contamination - yet, still these methods can become redundant when faced with human error or relaxed conventions within public buildings.

Building design can play an important role here. Daniel May, Director at Consort explains:
“We’re at a point where decision makers are under pressure to keep building hygiene standards as high as ever before. And outside of the clear-cut hygiene measures, it’s understood that more can be done throughout the building design process, with architectural hardware selection at the core of decisions.
“Door hardware is the first touchpoint when entering, exiting or navigating a building, and can be one of the most bacteria-ridden. Yet, the latest in hardware advancements could give facility managers an edge in the fight against infection, especially in healthcare facilities, such as hospitals for example, where footfall is high and the need to maintain strict sterile environments already exists.
“For added protection against bacteria, facilities can implement tailored anti-microbial hardware and finishes. Anti-microbial coatings applied to door handles are precisely formulated to prevent bacteria build-up upon the surface by interrupting cell multiplication. Some door seal solutions also make use of modern anti-bacterial technology, embedding it within the aluminium and silicone of the door seal during production, further reducing the spread of bacteria in high traffic areas.”

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) sets a regulation that cleanliness and effective infection control is a necessity for care and hospital locations. As well as best practice methods, healthcare environments are encouraged to introduce innovative infection control methods where possible.

Similarly, under The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, decision makers have an active duty to keep inhabitants safe and their environments clean. And aside from the use of antimicrobial solutions, many are challenged to provide hygienically maintained environments without sacrificing fire or safety standards.

Daniel adds:
“Facilities with high footfall must also consider ventilation and ease of movement. Whether in healthcare, commercial or public environments, both are key elements of efficient building management and when done effectively, can further help inhibit the spread of infection by ensuring fresh air is consistently making its way through halls and rooms.
“The most effective way to improve ventilation throughout a building is by opening its windows and doors. This creates an inlet for fresh air and an outlet for the old air, and with access points open, minimises the need to touch door handles. Yet, when focusing on airflow, it’s inopportune to disregard fire safety. Too many times, we’ve seen facilities fall foul of leaving fire doors propped open in favour of improving ventilation and ease of access - but simply put, it’s illegal to do so and leaves fire doors wholly ineffective in a fire situation.
“Modern exit systems are purpose built to ensure fire doors can be left open safely and securely. Automatic door controls make use of sensors which activate the operator devices connected to the main access doors. In turn, this aids access and egress when required and closes the doors shut when necessary. In the event of a fire, the alarm is sounded, and the doors close automatically - ensuring safety is never compromised. What’s more, these systems can be integrated with the external building security, reducing risk on all fronts.
“Ultimately, when paired with regular cleaning practices, these modern solutions can play an assist role in the fight against infection, helping to maintain building hygiene as well as the obligatory standards associated with building and fire safety.”
Infection Control at Consort

Consort’s bespoke specification services extend to hygienic solutions, offering users tailored products to suit the needs of any building infrastructure. Antimicrobial finishes can be applied to any touch products and door seals, of which are already supplied to large complex hospitals around the world including Pamela Youde in Hong Kong and the Metropolitan Hospital in Birmingham.

Spooky track day circuits to check out this Halloween

TrackDays.co.uk uncovers the best haunts for thrillseekers to drive on this fright night, race circuits such as Castle Combe and Goodwood are both rumoured to have phantom guests. meanwhile, Snettertons' resident ghoul, 'Scary Tree' reveals its disguise.

It's track or treat this Halloween, as leading driving experience provider TrackDays.co.uk is offering daredevils the chance to screech around the UK's spellbinding race circuits, many of which hold their own spooky secrets.

The Cotswold village, Castle Combe, namesake of its racetrack is a site with numerous paranormal sightings. These include a ghostly miller seen hurrying home to a village cottage and reports of Viking battle cries which locals insist echo from the nearby Parsonage Wood.

Dan Jones, operation manager at TrackDays.co.uk, commented:

"With Castle Combe racetrack neighbouring these eerie yet enchanting locations, daring drivers should keep their eyes peeled and ears open if they wish to leave with their own ghost story to tell."

Meanwhile, Goodwood, home of the famous festival of speed and another beloved racetrack, also has a chilling tale to tell. According to Georgian legend, a beautiful widow, known as Mrs-M, died in a tragic accident involving an uncontrollable horse-drawn carriage, and later appeared to her brother-in-law in the local area.

Dan added: "This story might give a spine-tingling chill, but drivers can be assured that they will not be required to control runaway horses as they take supercars such as a Lamborghini or Ferrari for a spin around the iconic Goodwood racetrack with TrackDays.co.uk!".

On a lighter note, when Snetterton racetrack regulars realised that the dark, mysterious figure causing a fright was in fact a large tree in the shape of a human, they were reminded that not all ghost stories require a ghastly and ghoulish ending.

Indeed, last year Snetterton's iconic 'Scary Tree' was sadly damaged by Storm Ciara, but despite this, lives on to remind passing drivers that things aren't always what they seem.

Keen customers can have a go themselves at spotting the now disfigured infamous 'Scary Tree' at their next visit to Snetterton Race Circuit as they drive one of TrackDays.co.uk's many supercars, including McLarens and Bentleys.

Dan concluded: "Whilst many will celebrate October 31st by carving pumpkins, trick or treating or eating toffee apples, this Halloween, TrackDays.co.uk hopes to offer something a little spookier not for the faint of heart."

Since 2004, TrackDays.co.uk has been thrilling thousands of customers with driving experiences, bike and car track days and experience gifts.

TrackDays.co.uk prides itself in offering a huge range of experiences at tracks and venues across the UK and Europe. This is possible as TrackDays.co.uk is independent and not tied to any one track, provider, hotel or events team.

Truly memorable experiences include supercar driving, rallying, drifting, off-roading and much, much more, to suit all ages and tastes.

ADSA Sponsors Industry Award

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) is sponsoring a prestigious award highlighting the best in electronic product design and innovation at the AI Specification Awards 2022.

Next year’s biennial event, which is organised by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), will mark its 40th anniversary.

ADSA is sponsoring the award to support member organisations that offer products and services that straddle traditional architectural ironmongery and electronic/technological solutions. It is part of a wider move to work with other professional and trade organisations for greater resilience and integration.

Last year, ADSA joined forces with the Door Hardware Federation (DHF) to launch the Entrance Systems Alliance – an assessment centre for technical qualifications. It also supported the GAI members day this summer.

The Product Design and Innovation – Electronic Award, will be judged on effective specification and demonstrate security, accessibility and safety enhancements that also add to aesthetics, functionality and longevity.

To enter, projects or products must have been completed or released on the market between 1 October 2018 and 30 September 2021.

Entries are now open and must be submitted by 19 November 2021. Each category will have a first, second and third placing. The judges will also decide on an overall ‘Winner of Winners’.

Entries should be submitted online at www.aispecificationawards.co.uk

Said Ken Price, Managing Director of ADSA:
“We are delighted to sponsor the Product Design and Innovation – Electronic Award. As an association representing the powered pedestrian door industry, we are conscious that entrance solutions frequently consist of manual, electronic and technological products combined. We would actively encourage our members to enter and demonstrate the fantastic design and innovation which is regularly produced by our industry.”

Douglas Masterson, Technical Manager for GAI, added:
“We are overjoyed to have ADSA sponsor this award and join our judging panel. Following the postponement of last year’s awards, we will be assessing projects completed and products launched over the last three years! The 40th anniversary of the award promises to be bigger and better than ever.”

The Automatic Door Association (ADSA) was formed in 1985 to establish quality and safety standards for the automatic door industry. It developed the first industry code of practice which covered safety aspects of automatic doors for pedestrian use.

This subsequently formed the basis of BS 7036: 1988, a code of practice for provision and installation of safety devices for automatic, power operated pedestrian door systems.

Its membership includes manufacturers, suppliers, installers and service providers of automatic doors – from global companies to sole traders. ADSA member organisations supply more than 75% of the UK market.

For further information on ADSA membership, email: rachel@adsa.org.uk or telephone: 01827 216136.

JD Drives Celebrates Initial Success with Plans to add more to the Range

In June 2021, JD (UK) Ltd, sole UK distributor of Alutech garage door products, launched an exciting new sub brand, JD Drive Systems. Under this brand, they introduced a new safety brake package, which has been well received by garage door fabricators and installers, with sales already doing well.

Following on from this initial success, JD Drives will soon be adding further products to its line of accessory products, replacement parts and consumables.

JD (UK) Ltd MD, Steve Hudson, said:
“The idea behind JD Drives is to eventually create a one-stop-shop for our customers where they can get everything they might need, taking away the headache of having to source from multiple suppliers.
We’re delighted with how well-received the new safety brake package has been and are looking forward to adding more products to the JD Drives range over the coming months.”

The first in the series of product launches under the JD Drive Systems brand was a safety brake package containing a safety brake, dummy end and interlocking cable. The safety brake, Series: JD18S-DB, has a Max Speed (rpm): 22, Run Torque: 130 N.m and Max Torque: 520 N.m. The parts are priced individually as well as priced as a package.
