Rare-breed 1966 Shelby GT350 added to Classic and Prestige Vehicle Sales Stable

Hilton & Moss, the world-class specialists in the sales and servicing of classic and prestige vehicles, bring an octane-fuelled injection of race-primed muscle to their sales showroom with a stunning 1966 example of the Shelby GT350.

Fully converted from road-ruling muscle car to pure-blooded racer, this Shelby GT350 was created in the same year as Ford’s legendary win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans against the might of Ferrari – bringing the spirit, speed and sound of Carroll Shelby’s history-making racers from the track to the open road.

The ‘Candy Apple Red’ Shelby GT350 acquired by Hilton & Moss exudes a race-ready presence, proudly honouring the monumental achievement of its cousins at the Circuit de la Sarthe with its imposing ‘Le Mans’ stripes.

The impressive exterior only offers a small hint of its racing pedigree, however – upholding a particularly rare status as one of only 12 examples produced in 1966 that competed during the period, and making it a truly worthy standard-bearer for carrying Carroll Shelby’s name.

Destined from the start-line for racing, the Shelby GT350 was delivered from the Shelby team’s seasoned hands to Hayward Motors California, where it was prepared from the wheels-up to comprehensive racing specification.

Sold to a Mr Arthur Flores competing in SCCA California, Hayward Motors California supported Mr Flores with the Shelby GT350’s first racing venture, going on to compete extensively at Riverside and Laguna Seca until 1975.

Upholding its racing-inspired heritage, the Shelby GT350 continued to compete at top-flight circuits from Road Atlanta and Sebring, to Palm Beach and Watkins Glen. Following a meticulous restoration, it maintained its racing credentials in the hands of Mr James K Dobbs, a well-known collector, who competed in the storied example at Road Atlanta in 1985 and 1986.

The fourth owner ran the vehicle at the SAAC-19 1994, before transforming its eye-catching red paintwork to the iconic Wimbledon White synonymous with the ’65 generation of Shelby GT350s.

Receiving a full restoration in 1996 at the hands of Liebenberg and Kenworthy, the Shelby GT350 regained its head-turning red and white lustre, opening the next chapter of its journey in the UK in the careful storage of its new owner, who cherished the vehicle until its sale by RM Sotheby’s in 2017.

Undergoing a comprehensive mechanical rework in March 2022 worth over £8,300, the Mustang is fully primed and ready to roar onto the open road – proudly carrying its sporting heritage and the mantle of Carroll Shelby’s track-to-road philosophy.

The Hilton Group Founder, Peter Hilton, said:
“Carroll Shelby’s achievements on the racetrack and the open road are part of a story every true petrolhead can fall in love with; it’s a tale of hard graft, passion for speed and performance, and giving normal drivers the opportunity to experience the world of motorsport.
“Offering someone the chance to experience that story with our Shelby GT350 is a truly exciting prospect, and we look forward to facilitating the next chapter of this amazing vehicle’s journey.”

Additional detail on the Shelby GT350 can be found on the listing page here, with further information on the Hilton & Moss business available here.

At the Sharp Edge of Sustainable Packaging Design for Manufacturers

Colton Packaging, worked with long standing manufacturing clients to support them with “going green” in their protective packaging to create a 100% recyclable solution.

In response to its clients wanting to be more sustainable and reduce waste, Loughborough based packaging specialist, Colton Packaging, has completely eliminated polystyrene from the corner packaging used to protect a manufacturer’s door and frame products.

With over 20 years’ experience, Colton’s in-house design team relished the opportunity to reimagine the bulky, polystyrene corner pieces whilst giving them a sustainable edge. The challenge was finding a replacement that was as robust in protecting the products, while being eco-friendly, minimising waste and reducing required storage.

Colton’s head of design Ross Connolly, comments:
“The polystyrene pieces are bulky to store and also cannot be recycled so are costly in terms of waste. With our expertise in corrugated cardboard packaging, we wanted to create a solution made from recycled material that is also fully recyclable itself.
“Using the original parts as a template, we visualised the pieces as flat scored, corrugated sheets and created designs for bespoke recyclable corrugated cardboard inserts. We went through a few iterations with the clients utilising various CAD drawings and prototypes. We soon settled on designs which are flat pack to store and easily folded into 3D protective corners which slot on doors and window frames.”

To cater for different thicknesses of product an additional insert was created to prevent any movement during delivery and transportation. Different versions with protective buffers were also created to accommodate protruding sections.
The flat pack corrugated cardboard solution has 100% replaced polystyrene and delivered multiple additional practical and carbon saving benefits to the whole packaging process.
Ross explains, “In terms of materials, the clients are seeing around a 30% reduction in costs. In addition, the new flatpack design takes up less than 25% space than before. So, in our stock and serve warehouse, where the polystyrene sections were taking up a full load, they now only need two pallet spaces for storage.
“The same goes on the lorries. The clients were receiving two dedicated lorry load deliveries per week from full 18tonne trucks. They still have two drops per week, but now we can fit them into other delivery schedules, therefore reducing mileage and subsequently fuel consumption.”
“Above all though, they have 100% removed polystyrene, eradicated waste and replaced it with a 100% recycled and recyclable solution, without compromising on quality and product protection. In fact, corrugated cardboard offers the same or potentially better protection than polystyrene, as it does not snap and holds its form on impact.”
Since the new protective corrugated cardboard solutions have been implemented the clients have achieved a significant cost reduction and improved sustainability credentials. These benefits are also being multiplied across the end users, as on building sites where residential developments are receiving the doors and frames, they can achieve zero waste to landfill and improve recycling from packaging.

One-Stop Shop for Strand Solutions

Strand Hardware has introduced new products to its panic and emergency hardware range to provide customers with a one-stop shop for complete solutions to key products.

Armoured door loops, power supply units (PSU) and PSU batteries to provide battery back-up are now available to purchase alongside the Strand Antipanic Motorised Touch Bar range.

Until now, Strand Hardware customers have needed to source these items from other suppliers. Being able to buy them in one place should save time and money by incorporating into existing orders, thereby reducing costs.

The power supply units (PSU) are used to convert the external mains voltage, 240v into the required voltage current to operate the motorised touch bar which is 12 – 24v DC or 12v AC.

The additions have been competitively priced and meet Stand Hardware's exacting quality standards.

Said Strand Hardware Sales Director Craig Fox:
"These products are useful additions to our key motorised touch bar products: the PHTM0, 55 and 57. Most businesses are currently experiencing increased costs throughout their supply chain, so it makes sense for Strand to stock items as a total solutions package and help our customers save time and money."

Strand Hardware Ltd is a family-run business with a wealth of experience in architectural ironmongery. Based in Walsall, West Midlands, the company was established in 1991, by the late Jonathan Franks. His daughter, Catherine, is now Company Chair.

It supplies high-quality window and door hardware, combining locally manufactured products with sole UK distribution for top European brands including Athmer and Antipanic.

Strand Hardware's reputation has been built on delivering first-class customer service and technical support by its experienced industry professionals.

Unity Doors Attain Certification for Security, Fire & Smoke Control

Secured by Design member company Unity Doors have attained certification for security, fire & smoke control on their Fire Safe FD30S composite residential doorset range.

Secured by Design (SBD) has been a staunch campaigner for improved security in buildings for over 30 years. As a consequence of the tragic events of the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017, SBD announced that as part of its membership it was requiring doors that are either described as fire doors, or where fire performance is declared or implied, to have third-party certification for both security and fire performance.

SBD have subsequently revisited the possible life-threatening characteristics of fire rated doorsets, as asphyxiation caused by smoke inhalation is the most common cause of deaths in flats when a fire occurs, and SBD now requires all member companies with doorsets listed on their SBD schedule that are fire rated and that are required by UK Building Regulations (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) to have smoke control properties for the intended installation - e.g. flat entrance doorsets to be certificated for the following attributes – Security, Fire and Smoke Control.

SBD are adamant that any doorset that carries SBD accreditation should be fit for purpose in all declared characteristics, but especially those that are life critical such as fire, security and smoke control.

Doug Skins, Secured by Design, said:
“I am delighted that Unity Doors have attained this certification, it is a testament to the company seeking to ensure that all of their doors and doorsets achieve the best performance for their chosen environment. They have been valued members with SBD since 2012 and are focused on delivering excellence and making a real difference to peoples’ lives.”
Unity Doors, said:
“We’re really proud to be one of the first composite doorset manufacturers to achieve the latest Secured by Design fire doorset requirements. The addition of smoke control as well as security and fire performance signals a major step forward and we’re certain it will result in improved levels of fire performance throughout the industry.”

Unity Doors is part of the Unity Group, which is made up of JCK Joinery – the bespoke timber door specialist, with a heritage spanning more than 150 years - and Unity Doors who have been serving the door industry for over 20 years.

As a group, they are specialists in the design, manufacture and installation of high performing British made doors, including; sheet moulding compound (SMC), thermoplastic composite, engineered solid timber core composites and high quality timber doors.

First of its kind for Codelocks with new Glass Door Smart Lock

The new CL4500 GD is Codelocks’ first glass door lock equipped with NetCode® technology.

Codelocks has launched its first glass door smart lock, bringing intelligent access control to modern workspaces. Designed for use on glass doors, the CL4500 GD is an updated version of the CL4000, incorporating Codelocks’ NetCode® Technology.

The CL4500 GD is a medium-duty electronic lock with a Rondo-style patch lock to suit toughened glass doors. It has key override access and a 12-button backlit keypad for operation in dim light conditions.

The lock can be fitted to a solid door frame using the flat strike panel or to glass side panels using the additional strike box, meaning it can be installed in partial, or fully glass-walled rooms.

Colin Campbell, Managing Director at Codelocks said,
“Our new glass door lock brings stylish sophisticated access control to workplace offices, meetings rooms and hired spaces. While glass walls give a space an open, transparent feel, there is still often the need for access control.
“With smart technology built in, the CL4500 GD helps to create a flexible environment to work in. Our lock range can also be combined with our antibacterial coating, Clean by Codelocks, helping to minimise the spread of germs.”

As the first of Codelocks’ glass door range to use its NetCode® technology, the CL4500 GD can manage up to 350 different users, who can unlock it via a code, card or smartphone. NetCode® allows for temporary code generation, ranging between 1 hour to 1 year, with single or multiple uses.

The proprietary technology allows facilities and building managers to create and manage access via an app or online portal. Combined with its battery-powered, standalone build, no WiFi is required to operate the lock, this helps customers to manage access control wherever they are.

For architects, locksmiths and installers looking for an alternative to traditional access control, and facilities and building managers looking to upgrade workplaces, the CL4500 GD combines smart technology with modern access control features.

The Summer Issue of Door Industry Journal is available online now!

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Summer 2022 issue of Door Industry Journal, the Voice of the UK Door and Gate Industry.

Summer’s here and I’m sure you’re looking forward to some well-deserved downtime. I certainly am, especially after the near 40C temperatures that accompanied our final preparations for this issue!

It’s certainly been a challenging year so far, but despite the war in Ukraine and the soaring price of petrol, gas and electricity, our industry is holding its own.

However, for one big player in the garage door sector, JD UK, the war has led to a change of sectional door suppliers - from Alutech, a Belarusian company, to Polish firm Wisniowski (pronounced vish – noff – ski).

This was necessary due to punitive sanctions and 35% tariffs being placed on goods from Russia and Belarus. Amazingly, the change of suppliers was achieved in just under 4 months including modifying some of the products to be UK compatible – no mean feat!

You can read all about this in our lead story on page six and other articles later in the magazine.

A few more highlights in this issue:

IN2 Access - is expanding the reseller network for its popular ExpertSystem safety edge kits (page 10)

Hormann UK - is improving both its service to clients and its social and environmental initiatives (page 28) and (page 34)

A new range - of ‘timber’ garage doors from Fort aren’t all that they seem (page 58)

Garador - uses Durabelt technology in new scratch-resistant GaraRoll range (page 74)

SWS UK - reports a strong performance for its range of industrial and commercial shutters (page 78)

Comlink - introduces future-proof next generation hardware (page 97)

There’s plenty more inside - so, whether it’s a sun lounger by the pool or a deckchair in the garden that’s calling you, I hope you enjoy this latest edition of your DIJ.

I’ll be back with you in a few months’ time for our winter issue.

Editor, Door Industry Journal

Festival of the Unexceptional Welcomes Richard Hammond and The Smallest Cog team

Richard Hammond: Smallest Cog - FOTU Image Credit Nathan Morgan

The world’s greatest Concours (perhaps) promises to be bigger and better this year, with a just-announced appearance from Richard Hammond and The Smallest Cog team.

Richard Hammond needs little introduction as the star of many TV shows including Top Gear and The Grand Tour along with Jeremy Clarkson and James May. In August 2021, while Clarkson went farming and May opened a pub, Hammond launched his own car restoration business, The Smallest Cog.

Richard and his expert team will be enjoying the mundane motors on display at the 2022 Festival along with other notable guests including Mike Brewer of TV’s Wheeler Dealers, and star of Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars, Paul Cowland.

The 2022 Hagerty Festival of the Unexceptional takes place on Saturday 30th July, at Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire, with hundreds of cherished yet unexceptional, ordinary everyday cars from years gone by.

First staged by Hagerty in 2014, the Festival of the Unexceptional has earned its place in the automotive calendar as an attainable Concours event offering a mix of rare cars and a prestigious location in an informal and friendly atmosphere.

Showcasing long forgotten ‘ordinary’ classic cars of the late 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s, Festival of the Unexceptional remains the only Concours to champion the everyday cars we all know and love.

Tickets for the 2022 Festival of the Unexceptional are priced at just £20 per car, and just a few remain, so car enthusiasts are encouraged to grab them while they can.

Mark Roper, Managing Director of Hagerty International, said:
“Festival of the Unexceptional is known the world over for its unique selection of classic cars. To have experts like Richard Hammond appreciating the spectacle of our event shows just how popular these classics are becoming with today’s enthusiast, and I can’t wait to see the cars, and our guests later this month.”
About Hagerty, Inc.

Hagerty's Headquarters is based in Traverse City, Michigan. Hagerty’s purpose is to save driving and preserve car culture for future generations and its mission is to build a global business to fund that purpose.

Almost a Third Don't Understand their Responsibilities under Building Safety Act

The BWF Fire Door Alliance reveals new research into the understanding of fire door third-party certification as new building safety legislation comes into force.

The research reveals that almost a third of those responsible for fire doors do not understand fire door responsibility under Building Safety Act.

  • 30% of those surveyed acknowledged they are still unsure or do not understand their responsibility under the Building Safety Act

  • Almost one in ten (8%) do not know how the new legislation will affect how fire doors are specified

  • Four in five respondents say end clients do not require third-party certified fire doors to be specified

  • Positively, 55% of respondents specify or use fire doors that are third-party certified

Nearly a third (30%) of those responsible for fire door safety say they do not fully understand their responsibilities under the Building Safety Act*, one of the UK’s leading authorities on fire door safety and third-party certification has revealed.

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Fire Door Alliance’s survey of 1,000 people with responsibility for fire door specification, installation, and maintenance across the UK identified a lack of understanding of fire safety-related responsibilities under the new legislation. Almost one in ten (8%) were unaware of how new laws will affect how fire doors are specified.

However, in signs of an early positive effect of new legislation, more than half of respondents said they would now ask for more information on product traceability and seek more proof of performance.

Helen Hewitt, Chief Executive of the BWF Fire Door Alliance, said:
“Our findings clearly show that while the new legislation appears to have had a positive initial impact, there is still some work to be done in disseminating the detail and building an understanding of how compliance with the law can be met. This must be made an urgent priority for all those responsible for fire safety.”
Growing awareness of fire door certification, but still, work to do

The research, published in a new report as part of the BWF Fire Door Alliance’s Be Certain, Be Certified campaign explored understanding and attitudes toward third-party certification of fire doors, which can assist those responsible for a building’s fire safety to fulfil their legal obligations and offer robust proof of a fire door’s performance.

While, encouragingly, more than half (55%) of fire doors that respondents had responsibility for are third-party certified, 80% said that end clients, such as building owners and managers, do not require third-party certification.

Helen Hewitt said:
“Third-party certification provides robust proof of performance and traceability of a fire door’s components, its manufacture and journey through the supply chain. Despite this, there is still no mandatory requirement under Building Regulations for the use of third-party certified fire doors, despite the essential role fire doors play in protecting building occupants from the spread of smoke and fire.
“Our latest report, which we’re proud to launch as part of our Be Certain, Be Certified campaign, calls for those ultimately responsible for building fire safety to specify third-party certified fire doors as a requirement throughout all UK buildings. Not only will this raise the standard of fire door safety but crucially, it will help protect lives.”
Among those who do specify or use third-party certified fire doors, the primary reason for doing so is to meet and comply with fire safety legislation (47%). 40% said that the reason was to provide traceability of fire door components, manufacture and journey through the supply chain – highlighting a strong awareness of the benefits of third-party certification.

However, the research also highlighted major barriers to the adoption of third-party certified fire doors. Over a third (35%) cite cost as the primary reason, while 33% reported a lack of end client demand.

Certification delivers all-important traceability

While end clients typically don’t insist on certification, the overwhelming majority (88%) of respondents agree that the traceability of a complete fire door assembly is important to the organisations they’re working for. However, less than a third (28%) said they will go as far as to specify third-party certified fire doors to meet their obligations.
Helen adds, “Clearly there is not a price that can be put on safety or protecting the lives of building users, particularly those where people sleep or that house vulnerable occupants.”

About the research

The data in this report comes from a BWF Fire Door Alliance survey of 1,000 people with responsibility for fire door specification, installation and maintenance across the UK. Fieldwork was undertaken in March 2022.

*When the survey was conducted the Building Safety Act 2022 was referred to as the Building Safety Bill.

About the BWF Fire Door Alliance

The BWF Fire Door Alliance is the leading authority on fire door safety. The BWF Fire Door Alliance Scheme (formerly the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme) was established in 1997 by leading fire door manufacturers to bring the membership management, lobbying and promotion skills of the British Woodworking Federation to support the promotion of third-party certification of fire doors and fire doorsets.

The Fire Door Alliance is operated and managed by the British Woodworking Federation, and its vision is that every fire door / fire doorset sold in the UK meets required standards through its service life.

At the heart of the BWF Fire Door Alliance is third-party certification. Its mission is to ensure that only third-party certified fire doors and fire doorsets, installed by certified companies, are used in the UK.

Distinction Doors Launches New-Look Door-Designer

Distinction Doors has made some key improvements to its popular online sales tool, the door-designer configurator, delivering a better user experience for its customers and homeowners.

Developed in-house, the team has focussed on improving functionality, with a new design forming part of this development.

“We wished to make the door-designer even easier to use,” comments Bethaney Larkman, marketing manager at Distinction Doors.
“This meant removing the complexity by streamlining options and adding new functions.”

The doors are split into three categories: nxt-gen, Signature and Contemporary. A search function is in the top menu bar if the user is seeking a certain door. The glass options show what’s currently available and are only relevant to that door style.

The biggest challenge was reducing the load time. “We have not only increased the site load speed, but we can now use higher-quality images too,” continues Bethaney.
“This means that consumers can now appreciate more of the detail, including our beautiful woodgrain finish, in higher-resolution door and glass images.

“To further encourage consumer engagement, we have improved the preview function. Users can tweak and re-size the door to suit their chosen house or sample image. We have also developed the site so that request a quote remains on the bottom of the door visual throughout so the user can enquire at any stage.”

The new ability to save orders and return to them later is perhaps the most valuable function. This should prove extremely popular with Distinction’s customers and their customers, saving them time and ultimately, money. FAQs and "request a brochure" have also been added to the top menu.

Distinction customers listed on the showroom locator will now receive leads more efficiently as users will select from a list of showrooms local to them at the point of requesting a quote.

The design of the door designer complements the company’s new brand identity. For those Distinction fabricators with a branded configurator, the transition to the new format was automatic.

Early feedback suggests that Distinction customers are impressed with the revamped door designer, with many commenting on the improved functionality and its modern design, with several “…loving the new look”.

If you do not currently have an account with Distinction Doors and wish to be set up with your own personalised door-designer page, or for your company to be added to the Showroom Locator, please get in email us - support@distinctiondoors.co.uk.

New Digital Access Solutions training to be provided by Abloy UK

Abloy UK has announced the dates for two new courses at its Digital Access Solutions Academy, offering training on its Aperio and Incedo systems.

The Digital Access Solutions Academy is a purpose-built facility to showcase, work with, install and test the company’s extensive range of products, with a particular focus on new digital solutions and ecosystems.

The courses provided at the Academy provide delegates with the knowledge and practical skills to ensure they specify and install the right digital access products in suitable applications, with hands-on experience.

Ian Miller, Digital Access Solutions Academy Manager at Abloy UK said:
“Research[1] shows that digital access control solutions are becoming the new norm, with 77% of end-users currently operating an electronic system, 38% of which feature wireless access too.
“The shift towards remote and flexible working has created the need for more agile access control, and an easy way to manage access permissions with instant delivery, increased security, and sustainability.
“With this in mind, we have developed our Incedo and Aperio solutions to offer a secure, flexible and convenient way to control the movement of people in a building, and our hands-on training courses offer a comprehensive overview of how to effectively specify and install the systems.”

Aperio wireless devices are the easiest way to extend the reach of an access control system or to replace mechanical locks with intelligent access control. Because they operate wire-free, battery-powered Aperio devices are fast and cost-effective to install and save money in operating and maintenance costs.

During the course, delegates will understand all the technical aspects of designing a system, site survey and how to commission and fault find. The course has been designed with a mixture of theory and practical exercises, equipping attendees with the tools to specify Aperio access control products with confidence.

Incedo is a flexible security ecosystem that combines ASSA ABLOY’s world-leading range of wireless locks and other access hardware with flexible software, multiple management options and the ability to scale on demand, in any direction.

Incedo connects security software and hardware within a single, seamless platform with the ability to have complete remote control of premises and manage the ever-changing movement of people across multiple sites.

During the course, participants will learn suitable applications for Incedo products, what the system architecture looks like and how to integrate ASSA ABLOY’s Wireless Access Control range.

Additionally, delegates will learn how to configure and commission using Incedo Lite software and how Abloy can support you in winning more business.

Incedo Training Dates start on 20/7/22 through to 23/11/22 – see the full list here.

Aperio Training Dates start on 21/7/22 through to 08/12/22 – see the full list here.
