Jewers Doors Completes Major Project at British Airways Fleet Support Unit, Heathrow

Jewers Doors is proud to announce the successful completion of a major installation project at British Airways' Fleet Support Unit (FSU) at Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world. The project saw the supply and installation of two sets of Esavian 126-SBR power-operated hangar doors, each configured with 10 equal leaves; 10 on the north side and 10 on the south side of the hangar.

Each leaf of the new doors is 9 metres wide, 89 metres high, and weighs approximately 17.5 tonnes. The bespoke design and precise engineering required to accommodate such large dimensions is a testament to Jewers Doors' commitment to innovation and quality.

The removal of the existing hangar doors and installation of the new systems posed a significant challenge due to the operational constraints of the busy Heathrow Airport, but the Jewers team managed the project efficiently, ensuring minimal disruption to airport operations. For this, a big thank you is extended to both the British Airways Engineering and Property teams, for their cooperation, accommodation and assistance.

This successful installation reinforces Jewers Doors’ position as a leading provider of specialist industrial and aircraft hangar doors, trusted by major aviation and industrial clients worldwide. With over 40 years of experience, the company continues to deliver tailor-made, high-performance door solutions to meet the evolving needs of its clients.

Evolving Standards and Why They Matter

As new cylinder lock attack methods emerge, security must keep pace with them. By raising standards, the industry can stay ahead of threats and support the security industry in protecting homes and businesses.

The latest revision of national standards for enhanced security performance shows how the industry adapts to evolving risks. In 2024, TS007 was updated with the support of BSi and Sold Secure, which now includes protection against the latest forms of cylinder manipulation, such as freezing and glueing.

Following this, accreditation for SS312 Diamond and TS007 was also updated, becoming SS312 Diamond 2024 and BSi TS007-1:2024, with both coming into full effect from January 2027.

How Compliance Works in Practice

The framework of standards may appear complex, yet each plays an important and complementary role.

  • BS EN1303:2015, provides the technical foundation by setting out clear criteria for durability, resistance and security. Its grading system allows cylinders to be measured and compared in a consistent way, giving an objective benchmark for product performance.
  • TS007-1:2024, created by the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) and the Glass and Glazing Federation, applies a star rating system to cylinders and hardware, with three stars indicating the highest level of resistance.
  • SS312 Diamond, managed by Sold Secure, subjects cylinders to prolonged and sophisticated attempts to compromise them.
Together, these standards ensure cylinders are evaluated against a broad spectrum of risks. The credibility of these measures lies in the organisations behind them. The British Standards Institution (BSi), Sold Secure and the DHF all develop requirements with input from locksmiths, insurers, and the police.

Many insurance policies require TS007-three-star or SS312 Diamond approval, for cover to remain valid. Overlaying these standards is Secured by Design, the police-backed initiative recognising products proven to reduce crime. A cylinder awarded with this Police Preferred Specification has been reviewed for its contribution to reducing actual crime.

Gate Safe delivers CPD to police with SBD and the Academy

Gate Safe recently delivered a webinar-based CPD on automated and manual gate safety to over 120 police Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) and police crime prevention specialists, as part of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) Crime Prevention CPD programme.

Gate Safe’s involvement with this initiative stems from its ongoing working relationship with Secured by Design, a longstanding supporter of Gate Safe and the official police security initiative that works to improve the security of buildings and their immediate surroundings.

Following a formal introduction by Michael Brooke, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Police Crime Prevention Initiatives and Amanda Mulholland, National Police Crime Prevention Academy Manager, Richard Jackson OBE, founder of Gate Safe, provided a 45-minute presentation outlining the importance of gate safety and highlighting the protocols that must be adopted to ensure a safe and legally compliant installation. The ensuing Q&A session allowed delegates to discuss technical issues in more detail and to debate potential additional ideas to bring gate safety to the fore.

Richard Jackson OBE commented, “We are grateful to Secured by Design for its ongoing support of Gate Safe, and for its part in realising this excellent opportunity to extend the Gate Safe messaging to a highly influential and important strand of our target audience. We applaud the work that Secured by Design undertakes to improve the physical security and safety of buildings and their immediate environments, spanning the home, commercial and school sectors. We look forward to continuing the collaboration with Secured by Design, especially in the immediate future in relation to Gate Safe’s Safe School Gates initiative.”

Michael Brooke added, “We were delighted to support Gate Safe in delivering this important CPD session on automated and manual gate safety. The session provided valuable insight into the critical standards and procedures that help ensure safe, compliant installations across the UK. Gate Safe’s continued work to raise awareness of gate safety reflects our shared commitment to improving the security and safety of buildings and their surroundings, and we look forward to further collaboration.”

FERRARI F80 CROWNED “HYPERCAR OF THE YEAR” AND FERRARI 296 SPECIALE REIGNS IN THE “SUPERCAR OF THE YEAR”

Ferrari has been lauded in one of the industry’s most illustrious award ceremonies in London last night, walking away with arguably two of the most coveted titles in the TG Awards 2026, with the iconic F80 crowned “Hypercar of the Year”, and the class-leading 296 Speciale recognised as “Supercar of the Year”.

This brings Ferrari’s incredible tally of Top Gear awards to 21 awards in 23 years, including its 8th Supercar of the Year title. With a limited run of just 799 examples, the Ferrari F80 is writing a new chapter in the history of legendary supercars bearing the Prancing Horse badge, joining the pantheon of icons such as the GTO, F40 and LaFerrari by showcasing the best that the Maranello-based marque has achieved in terms of technology and performance.

Jethro Bovingdon, Contributing Editor at Topgear.com enthused: “Ferrari has embraced knowledge from F1 and endurance racing to create a whole that’s raw and energised but exploitable, intuitive and usable. The F80 sounds a bit tame from the outside, but inside it snorts, fizzes, shrieks and roars. So many layers, so much performance.”

The Ferrari 296 Speciale takes its rightful place in the exclusive lineage of special version Ferrari berlinettas and, just like its forebears – the Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale and 488 Pista – has been conceived to set the new benchmark in terms of driving thrills and engagement, not just for the marque’s production range, but for the segment as a whole.

Jason Barlow, Editor at Large at Topgear.com, stated: “It’s clear that the aim was to create a track-focused Ferrari with greater dynamic bandwidth than ever. It’s civilised enough that you wouldn’t think twice about hammering the 296 Speciale round Silverstone and then driving it home... to Italy. It raises the bar yet again in all the key measurables, and plenty that aren’t algorithmic. A sublime mix of analogue and digital.”

Ferrari’s Gianmaria Fulgenzi, Chief Product Development Officer, collected the awards and commented: “It is a privilege to receive these prestigious awards on behalf of my colleagues in Maranello for the latest incarnation of important and iconic model lines which set the new benchmark for performance and driving thrills. These coveted titles honour the achievements of a team of dedicated engineers who constantly strive to achieve the most ambitious technical objectives.”

Redefining Quality Within Ellard: Jeff Monks Ellard’s Quality Control Manager

After beginning his career at Ellard within the technical team, supporting product development, customer training, and technical calls, Jeff Monks has returned to the business in a new and pivotal position: Quality Control Manager.

Jeff’s professional journey has always been grounded in a passion for quality and problem-solving. During his first tenure at Ellard, he became known for his deep technical understanding and ability to translate complex product details into practical solutions for customers. That blend of expertise and communication became a hallmark of his approach, and one that the business is delighted to welcome back.

When the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped working life, Jeff made the decision to move to the countryside, pursuing new opportunities outside the company. “At the time, it felt like the right next step,” Jeff reflects. “But sometimes life has a way of steering you back to where you’re meant to be.” Though that period brought valuable experience, it also reaffirmed what Jeff valued most: being part of a forward-thinking team where quality and innovation are central to everything.

So, when the opportunity arose to return to Ellard, the timing could not have been better. “It feels just like coming home,” he says, a sentiment that resonates strongly with the company’s ethos and value of focusing on our people.

In his new role, Jeff oversees the processes that ensure Ellard’s products and services meet the highest standards. From in-house testing and auditing to maintaining compliance with ever-evolving regulations, his remit is both technical and strategic. The goal, he explains, is simple but vital: to give customers confidence, not only in the reliability of Ellard’s products, but in the integrity of the business behind them.

Looking ahead, Jeff is excited by the renewed momentum within Ellard. The leadership team has brought fresh energy and alignment across departments, and he’s eager to contribute by embedding quality at every stage of the business.

“There’s a real sense of purpose here,” he notes. “The culture has evolved and so have our standards. My role is to make sure those two things move forward together.”

A natural collaborator, Jeff sees himself as the bridge between technical expertise and commercial ambition, ensuring that customer needs and regulatory requirements align with practical, market-ready solutions.

“The answer isn’t always going to be yes,” he admits, “but wherever possible, it won’t be no.”

With his blend of technical insight, hands-on experience, and commitment to continuous improvement, Jeff’s return marks a meaningful step forward for Ellard. His leadership in quality control will not only strengthen internal processes but also enhance the customer experience, delivering the confidence, reliability, and service that have long defined the Ellard name.

High-Performance Door Solutions for Ford Dagenham’s Manufacturing Facility

Industrial door manufacturer and leading trade supplier Alliance Door Engineering has contributed to a major upgrade project at Ford of Britain’s manufacturing plant in Dagenham, East London.

The Wigan-based manufacturer supplied multiple PVC rapid roll doors, insulated roller shutters and fire-resistant shutters as part of the programme to improve site safety and working conditions.

The doors were expertly installed by SMS Security Services, an Essex-based trade partner, as part of a multi-million-pound investment to modernise the facility. Alliance supplied and supported the installation of a range of high-performance door solutions designed to enhance safety, operational efficiency and workflow across the site.

With constant vehicle movements and multiple shift patterns, Ford required door systems capable of withstanding intensive daily use. The chosen solution - Cheetah high-speed doors - provided the ideal combination of speed, reliability and low maintenance, ensuring smooth traffic flow and minimising energy loss between production zones.

In addition, certified fire-resistant shutters were installed to replace ageing, non-compliant systems, bringing the site fully in line with current fire safety standards. These shutters now protect critical production areas, including engine manufacturing lines for models such as the Ford Puma, giving enhanced compliance and peace of mind for site operators.

In close collaboration with their trusted trade partner, Alliance was delighted to supply products that supported the successful delivery and installation of this prestigious project at one of the UK’s most iconic automotive manufacturing sites.

Towards the end of 2026, Alliance Door Engineering will celebrate 25 years of supplying the trade with high-performance industrial doors and is planning a series of events for its suppliers, customers and staff to commemorate the occasion.

40 Years in Business and 10 Years of Leadership Under Roy Sinclair

Gliderol, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers & distributors of garage doors and automation systems, is proud to celebrate two major milestones: 40 years of business excellence and a decade of leadership under Managing Director Roy Sinclair.

Since joining Gliderol in 2015, Roy has guided the company through a period of innovation, growth, and modernisation — strengthening its reputation for quality and reliability across the garage door industry. Under his leadership, Gliderol has expanded its product range, invested in advanced manufacturing technologies, and reinforced its commitment to safety and customer service.

In addition to his role at Gliderol, Roy also serves as Chairman of the Garage Door Group within the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), where he plays a key part in promoting standards of excellence, safety, and professionalism across the sector. His dual leadership roles reflect a deep commitment not only to Gliderol’s continued success but also to the long-term health of the wider industry.

“Reaching 40 years in business is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the hard work of our dedicated team and loyal network of partners,” said Roy. “It’s been an honour to lead Gliderol over the past decade and to see the company continue to innovate while staying true to its core values of quality, service, and reliability.

“The past decade has brought its share of challenges — from stabilising the business and refining our offering, to relocating, navigating the Covid years, and adapting to the difficult trading environment we face today. However, the most exciting milestone has come in the past year with the launch of our new website, designed specifically with our dealers in mind.

“The platform enables dealers to order any product or part entirely online, from any internet-enabled device, at any time that suits them. Once logged in, they can access our full product range, along with their personalised offers and discounts. Innovations like this are helping Gliderol stay ahead of the competition.”

Gliderol has continued to be a trusted name in garage door solutions across the UK & Eire, supplying, distributors, dealers, merchants, sme housebuilders and national house builders nationwide. The company remains focused on sustainable growth, innovation, and maintaining the highest standards of manufacturing excellence as it looks ahead to the future.

YANGWANG U9 XTREME’S SPEED RECORD FEAT IS TOPGEAR.COM’S ‘MOMENT OF THE YEAR’

The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme’s record-breaking speed run has been recognised as the ‘Moment of the Year’ in the 2026 Topgear.com awards. The hypercar became the fastest production model on the planet when it reached 308.4mph at Germany’s ATP Papenburg test track in September– a feat that may be “just the beginning” according to Top Gear.

Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, said: “We are deeply honored that Top Gear has named the U9 Xtreme's world record run as the 'Moment of the Year'. This achievement reflects the unique technology and engineering excellence behind YANGWANG.

“The U9 Xtreme demonstrates how BYD, as a true technology company, continues to push the boundaries and demonstrate what electric performance can deliver. Every breakthrough is the result of the relentless pursuit of perfection by our more than 120,000 BYD R&D engineers. We will continue to create technologies that redefine what is possible in the era of electric vehicles.”

The U9 Xtreme is an ultra-performance technology showcase from YANGWANG, BYD’s luxury sub-brand. Developed from the established U9 model, it benefits from precision tuning and comprehensive revision of its electric powertrain and chassis.

Among the key elements are an increase in the platform’s electric voltage from 800V to 1,200V, four ultra-high-speed electric motors that can operate at up to 30,000rpm and a lithium-ion phosphate Blade Battery with an exceptional 30C discharge rate. The engineering and technology elements combine to deliver more than 3,000hp and a power-to-weight ratio of 1,217hp per tonne – another global record.

For the record-breaking run, the car’s DiSus-X suspension was tuned to handle the exceptional stresses of circuit driving and track-quality semi-slick tyres were fitted. At the wheel was Marc Basseng, one the world’s most experienced track speed specialists with skills honed across many years in sports car and endurance racing.

Jack Rix, Top Gear Editor in Chief said: “The U9 Xtreme makes everything with a combustion engine look a bit… weak. And it delivered a mic drop moment in Germany, hitting 308mph and sending shockwaves around the automotive world. We’ve got a feeling beating Bugatti at its own game is just the beginning.”

Just days before the history-making achievement, Basseng piloted the U9 Xtreme to a new record – 304.1mph– for an electric vehicle. During the car’s intensive development programme, he also lapped the daunting Nürburgring Nordschliefe in 6m59.157sec – shaving more than five seconds off the previous record time in the Electric Super Sports Cars class and becoming the first such car to dip under the seven-minute mark.

The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme is an authentic production model, with a strictly limited run of no more 30 examples being made available to discerning customers worldwide.

Burglaries and vandalism in Germany are growing challenges for building security

In Germany, the issue of vandalism and break-ins into commercial and residential properties is becoming an increasing issue. For this reason, on September 16, 2025, WIŚNIOWSKI hosted an international press conference dedicated to modern building protection solutions. The keynote speaker was Andreas Schmidt from ift Rosenheim, who presented the latest data, standards, and directions in the field of security.

According to the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office, in 2024, national crime statistics recorded the third consecutive annual increase in residential burglaries. A total of 78,436 cases were reported, including attempted break-ins (compared to 77,819 the previous year), representing a 0.8% rise. Notably, police data shows that 29,373 cases (37%) occurred during the day, and as many as 107,861 cases involved thefts from basements, attics, and laundry rooms. The highest burglary rates were reported in Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg, also influenced by migration dynamics.

The data presented during the conference showed that the actual threat still differs from public perception. While some regions report fewer “classic” burglaries, criminals are increasingly acting faster, more aggressively, and targeting structural weak points of buildings – such as garage doors or drive systems lacking proper locks.

Modern safety standards

A key part of the presentation was the discussion of current European standards (EN 1627:2021 ff.) and the German DIN/TS 18194 (2020), which for the first time classified garage doors as a separate category requiring burglary resistance testing.

Tests include:
  • Static load tests – e.g., resistance to prying and pressure,
  • Dynamic load tests – simulating attacks with heavy objects,
  • Manual attacks – using tools such as crowbars or screwdrivers.
ift Rosenheim also emphasised that products are classified into six resistance categories (RC1–RC6), allowing the appropriate level of protection to be matched with the expected type and intensity of attack.

Expert insights from ift Rosenheim

Beyond classic burglary, vandalism is becoming a growing issue. As Schmidt noted, its nature differs significantly from burglary. While burglars typically act quietly, quickly, and in secrecy, vandals often strike impulsively, sometimes under the influence of alcohol or emotions, and with little concern about being recorded or caught.

The aim of vandals is not only destruction (e.g., bus shelters, vehicles, or facades) but also forcing access to buildings for further damage or looting. Therefore, as emphasized during the conference, garage doors resistant to large-scale, brutal attacks must be a standard part of modern manufacturing. Tests include, for example, dropping 50-kg steel cylinders simulating manhole covers or heavy stones.

Andreas Schmidt emphasised that today’s security approach must combine traditional burglary resistance with protection against vandalism. He pointed out that the threats are no longer limited to a lone burglar with a crowbar, but also include organized groups acting violently and without fear of consequences.

It was also highlighted that design and certification of such systems should focus on protecting not only property but above all human safety. Even the German police recommend checking whether doors, windows, or garage doors are certified against burglary – for example, in the E-Einbruch database.
