Selling on the Internet, by Telephone, from a Shop or in the Home

This piece of new legislation which comes into effect on June 13th this year has certainly crept up and jumped on everyone from behind. The first we got to hear of it was yesterday in this communication from HMRC despite us having a good supply of news feeds.

It looks like it will particularly affect everyone in the retail garage door sector, locksmiths working for homeowners, or any business selling to consumers so it's well worth reading up on the subject as there's a sting in the tail if you don't!

Also take a look at how the "post-contract customer phone lines" will affect you, especially if you are using premium rate numbers (090, 0870 etc). The trading standards documents downloadable below go into detail about these and offer some good guidance.

Here is what was in the HMRC communication:

"If you sell goods and services to consumers, you are likely to be affected by changes in legislation coming into force in June 2014. Those selling online or off-premises will see the biggest change.

"The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 will apply from the 13 June this year and set out new rules on:

•    information to be given to customers
•    the cancellation rights which your customer will be entitled to
•    charges for any post-contract customer phone-lines you offer
•    the express consent needed before you can charge for something
"If you don’t get it right, you may find yourself out of pocket. For more information and guidance go to:
http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/advice/advice-business.cfm

or
"Alternatively contact your local Trading Standards or Business Support helpline (details at www.gov.uk/business-support-helpline) "

The website at this link provides a very straightforward guide to the new regulations and highlights the difference between sales lines and after sales support lines - www.callcentrehelper.com

Partnership Proves Positive - Joint sticker campaign reaches half a million homes UK-wide

The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) and the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network (NHWN) have forged a positive home security partnership after a recent window sticker campaign reached over half a million homes in the UK.

Sponsored by the MLA, the co-branded sticker campaign was put into action to support the membership of the Neighbourhood and Home Watch movement and to drive consumers towards highly skilled, vetted and inspected MLA locksmiths.

The co-branded stickers were successful in raising the profile of the MLA and the services which its members provide. The reverse of the stickers featured MLA branding and information on how to find your local MLA approved locksmith.

In addition to this NHWN groups have been encouraged to get boxes of the MLA’s Handbook, published together with the Sold Secure Approved Products Catalogue and containing lots of useful security information as well as lists of MLA Approved Locksmiths, which they can distribute to their members. The latest edition is now available and NHWN groups are encouraged to contact the MLA’s head office to get their order in.

Kate Daisley, NHWN operations director, said:
“The MLA’s standing as a leading trade body for the locksmithing industry ties in perfectly with what the NHWN represents.

“A survey following this campaign has also revealed that 89% of people said that they would be more inclined to use the MLA’s service knowing that they were working in partnership with the NHWN.”

Dr Steffan George, development director at the MLA, said:
“As the leading approval body for the UK locksmithing industry, the MLA is proud to feature alongside such a historic and prestigious organisation as the NHWN.

“This campaign has been a great opportunity for MLA members, as it has reached communities and members of the public who may not have previously known about the MLA or if there was an MLA approved locksmith in their area.

“However most importantly this partnership has been of great benefit to the British public, as it has helped not only provide essential security information to NHWN members, but also drive business towards good, honest trades people who are dedicated towards providing the best possible service.”

Rare Aston Martin Ulster Set To Break World Record At Bonhams Goodwood Festival Of Speed Sale

A rare ex-Works Aston Martin Ulster CMC 614 with an incredible racing history is to be sold by Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on June 27th, 2014.
As one of only 21 production Ulster’s ever built, the works racer, estimated at £1,400,000 - 1,600,000, is expected to beat the existing world record of £1,300,000 set by Bonhams last December for a pre-war Aston Martin at auction.

Having competed in over one hundred races throughout its past nine decades, the Ulster is arguably the most extensively raced Aston Martin in the world.
This extraordinary motor car has raced every year since 1935 (excluding a rest period throughout the Second World War). Built for endurance and pace, the two-seater Ulster features a four-cylinder 1496cc engine, guaranteed to reach speeds of up to 100mph.

This Ulster’s racing debut came at the 1935 Mille Miglia. It continued to build its racing legacy in other international blue riband races throughout the 1930s, finishing eighth at the 1935 Le Mans 24-Hour race, and going on to complete the Targa Abruzzo 24-hour sports car event near Pescara, Italy, crossing the finishing line in third place overall, and first in class.

Many famous and historic drivers have competed in Ulster CMC 614. From iconic British racing driver Eddie Hall, to Count ‘Johnny’ Lurani - founder of the Italian Scuderia Ambrosiana Grand Prix racing team - to Tommy Clarke and Maurice Falkner who took it to eighth at Le Mans in 1935.

The Ulster continued to shine in competition over the ensuing 90 years and has been active as recently as April 2014 at the VSCC’s (Vintage Sports Car Club) Spring Start meeting.

As a period entrant in both the Mille Miglia and Le Mans races, CMC 614 is not only eligible but positively welcomed to the great historic motor sport events world-wide, to include the Mille Retrospective; Le Mans Classic; Goodwood Revival; Monterey Historic; California Mille and Colorado Grand.

James Knight, Bonhams Group Head of Motoring, said
“CMC 614 certainly has the potential to exceed the existing Ulster record we established a few months ago. This car has the added benefit of being a Works entry that competed at the very highest international level. It will attract international interest and we are looking forward to an exciting sale.”

Homeowners Desperate For Space Solutions As Numbers Of Stay-At-Home Adult Children Hits Record High

As more young adults chose to live at home with their parents, unable to get on the property ladder, IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, is seeing a significant rise in products designed to save space and offer storage solutions.

The number of 20 to 34 year-olds living with their parents has jumped by 669,000 in the last eight years according to the Office of National Statistics, to an astonishing 3.3 million people.

The issue is most acute in areas such as Northern Ireland, the West Midlands, the North West and Wales where, in some locations, as many as 36% of young adults are still living with mum and dad.

As a result, many homes are bursting at the seams trying to accommodate an ever-growing number of adults.

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director of IronmongeryDirect, said:
“People are highly unlikely to move to a bigger home in order to accommodate grown-up children as often it’s seen (and hoped) to be a short term situation. Therefore, tradespeople are increasingly gaining work in helping to squeeze additional living and storage space out of an existing property.

“For example, one major issue is accommodating double beds into rooms that might previously have been for a child or a visitor’s room. One solution when space is tight is to add a sliding door, either in the entrance to the room of on fitted storage units. We’ve seen significant growth in demand for such products go hand in hand with the rise in young adults living at home.

“Another growing trend is for bathroom fittings that can be used to create mini en-suites, helping to solve the morning rush by adding small shower rooms onto existing bedrooms.

“We’ve certainly seen an increase in sales of these products as more houses are stretched to meet changing needs.”

David Leiper, Director. Duncan Crawley, Group Managing Director

SECUREFAST PLC one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and distributors of access control and locking products has acquired Innovative Electronic Technology Ltd. (IET), a UK manufacturer of access control systems incorporating building management software and hardware.

The technology is supported by advanced software, which provides a high level of building management capability as evidenced by it being chosen for the security of the whole of the site of the London Olympics in the construction stage. The IET range of products will be manufactured within the SECUREFAST group, enabling pricing to be highly competitive.

“Innovative Electronic Technology adds important new technology products to the current product portfolio offered by the SECUREFAST Group,” says Duncan Crawley, Group Managing Director. “The acquisition of Innovative Electronic Technology considerably enhances the Group’s position within the access control market and enables SECUREFAST to offer a more versatile British made product to its growing customer base”.

“Innovative Electronic Technology is an exciting addition to our portfolio, enabling SECUREFAST to incorporate both current reader options and more advanced biometrics via our established Entra access control package,” says David Sebire, Securefast Chairman.

The new Entra+ multi-site network system and associated products is expected to generate in excess of £1million of additional sales within the first year.

Innovative Electronic Technology Limited was founded in 1981 by David Leiper, following a distinguished career with a number of major electronics manufacturers. The Company is located in Potten End, Berkhamsted, UK, where the Group will create a centre for innovation, development and manufacture of electronic security products. Solar powered units for the lighting of bus shelters and public areas, is an example of another product developed by IET as an economic and eco-friendly solution where the cost of installing mains power would be uneconomic.

Award-winning bptw partnership specifies AluK building systems for the redevelopment of Shakespeare House, London

AluK window and door systems have been specified for the regeneration of Shakespeare House, Hackney, London, which saw 24 existing flats being converted into 18 high quality apartments. Working with Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association, bptw partnership reconfigured the existing housing block, installing additional windows to increase the amount of natural light and completely insulating the building to improve thermal efficiency.

For the refurbishment project the practice installed the 58BW window system as well as the 58BD and GT55 NI door systems on all the existing and proposed new elevations from ground to fifth floor level.

Justin Kelly, partner at bptw partnership comments:
“AluK window and door systems integrated very well with the design ethos of the project, with the window surrounds achieving the deep reveal effect that was proposed at the planning stage. The thermal performance matches the aspirations of the energy targets for the building – we are achieving the Code for Sustainable Homes targets on the new residential units.

“Deep reveals and window surrounds, new doors, as well as cladding, create a strong architectural feature and define the whole development, presenting it in a completely new light. The window frames are of significant slenderness, matching the architectural intent completely.”

The 58BW/BD window and door system offers a narrow profile solution with a unique polyamide thermal break design to improve thermal performance. For the Shakespeare House project the architects’ specified a U-value of 1.5.

The 58BW window system, as well as the GT55 NI, are certified under Secured by Design, a requirement essential to Islington and Shoreditch House Association.

AluK is one of a few UK manufacturers whose products are certified under the 'Secured by Design’ scheme operated by the Association of Chief Police Officers. AluK systems are tested to many levels of security: from opportunistic attack covered by PAS 24:2012, to higher levels of attack by organised crime covered by LPS 1175:SR2. Combined with the inherent strength of aluminium, AluK door and window systems are some of the most secure available on the market.

Window Ware Opens New Opportunities With Yale Blade

Leading hardware distributor, Window Ware has strengthened its partnership with Yale Door and Window Solutions by introducing to its portfolio the revolutionary new Yale Blade window lock.

The Yale Blade’s patented rotary action mechanism has been designed to deliver multiple benefits to fabricators, installers and homeowners alike, delivering added value at all stages of the supply chain.

Says Rachel Attwood, Managing Director at Window Ware:
“We were delighted to be an early supplier of Yale’s Doormaster™ so it made perfect sense to be at the forefront of another revolutionary new product from Yale.

“Anything that helps our customers be more efficient and flexible, which Blade sets out to do, has to be good news. It also fits neatly into Window Ware’s promise of “we’ve got it” and as security remains a key concern of homeowners, offering them the reassurance of a brand like Yale is certainly something we’re happy to support.”

Yale Blade offers fabricators the ability to fit keeps at any time of the manufacturing process, without pre-marking to offer a more flexible and efficient production process. The unique design also ensures one locking point height for all profiles, reducing stock holding for multi system users.

The rotary locking action of the Yale Blade significantly reduces mechanical wear, further eliminating compression loss and ensuring consistent weather-sealing performance for the life of the product and its fully retracting locking points completely eliminate cam clash, significantly reducing costly call backs.

Occupying the full depth of the eurogroove, the Yale Blade provides the window with increased integral strength and with unique lock engagement the full length of the keeps, Yale Blade exceeds the stringent requirements of PAS24 and as a result, carries the Police approved Secured by Design accreditation.

Kevin Hill, Managing Director of Yale Door and Window Solutions added:
“Innovation in its true form will always be economically important and we believe that the launch of Yale Blade represents a real revolution in window locking technology that helps move it to a higher plane for the complete supply chain.

“Every element of Yale Blade has been carefully considered by our research and development team to design, engineer and manufacture a window lock that is different and ultimately better than what is available for the benefit of our established partners such as Window Ware, their customers and end users.”

Yale Door and Window Solutions has developed the Yale Blade in an aluminium construction to deliver extensive corrosion resistance, further enhancing product service life, even in aggressive environments and is backed by a 12 year mechanical guarantee.

DHF’s Benchmark Gate Safety Training Course now Open to All Installers

The acclaimed Door & Hardware Federation Powered Gate safety diploma training course is now available to all gate installers wanting to boost their safe installation skills.

The DHF Powered Gate Group, which represents the UK’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment, set up the diploma course last September. It is a key part of its mission to educate and promote the safe and responsible design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of automatic gates in the UK.

Since its inception, more than 100 installers employed by DHF members have successfully completed the intensive two-day course and have been awarded their diplomas. The course, which has set a new benchmark in safety training, comprises a number of training modules. These cover all aspects of gate safety from initial risk assessment through to force testing.
“The DHF Powered Gate Group was set up with the encouragement of the Health & Safety Executive on behalf of the UK gate automation industry following the tragic deaths of two young children in accidents involving automated gates,” said DHF general manager and secretary Michael Skelding.

“The DHF is anxious to improve levels of safety across the powered gate sector, which is why it’s now opened up its diploma training course to all installers and those responsible for gate safety assessment inspection.

“The course has become recognised as the most comprehensive of its type in Europe. It sets extremely high standards in gate safety. There’s been a strong demand for places on the courses from non members. Now that the majority of DHF Powered Gate Group members have successfully put installers through the course, we are opening it up to all those installers in the industry wanting to extend their knowledge of safety.

“By combining resources from several of the industry’s leading experts, the training course is now the most comprehensive, technical and relevant available to today’s safety aware installers.”

The next diploma training courses will be held on:
  • May 14 and 15 at DHF member company CAME UK in Hemel Hempstead
  • May 20 and 21 at the Hunting Tower Hotel Perth
  • June 17 and 18 at DHF member FAAC (UK) Ltd, Basingstoke
  • July 22 and 23 at DHF member NICE UK, Nottingham.

The cost per delegate of the two-day course is £495 plus VAT. This cost is reduced to £345 if the delegate’s employer subsequently becomes a DHF member.

For more information on the diploma scheme, and to book places, visit www.dhfonline.org.uk or call the DHF on 01827 52337.

Concealment brings hidden benefits

The recent introduction of a Free Swing model has further enhanced the appeal of Samuel Heath’s Powermatic® controlled, concealed door closers and broadened the range of applications for which the door closers can be used.

Powermatic®door closers are enjoying increasing popularity in both private and public sectors of the building industry thanks to their outstanding performance characteristics and the many benefits they deliver by being totally invisible when the door is closed.

Performance matters
From a performance perspective, both original and Free Swing versions of the door closer comply with relevant fire performance standards and enable doors to comply with accessibility requirements.

Designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom under processes and systems that comply with BS EN 9001, both door closers comply with BS EN 1154, whilst Powermatic® Free Swing also meets the requirements of BS EN 1155, thereby allowing the closers to carry the CE mark.

Beyond their performance, Powermatic® door closers find particular favour with architects, interior designers, local authorities, clinicians and estates managers because of their concealment between door and frame:-

Enhanced aesthetics
Designers have long-admired Powermatic®’s ability to retain a clean, unhindered appearance to the door, without intrusion from the unsightly boxes and mechanical arms which are an unavoidable feature of surface mounted door closers.

In commercial situations, such as hotels, restaurants, apartments and offices, the appeal is, more often than not, purely one of looks. However, in clinical applications, particularly psychiatric units, mental health facilities and care homes, enhanced aesthetics can deliver some very real, practical benefits in improving the well-being of patients and residents by creating a more homely, less institutionalised environment.

But, the benefits of concealment go far beyond aesthetic considerations:-

Reduced vandalism
Many buildings are susceptible to vandalism, particularly schools, social housing, healthcare facilities and other public buildings where the users’ duty of care may not be as high, or where constant supervision is impractical.

A damaged door closer not only increases maintenance costs, but can also have dire consequences for a building’s occupants if it prevents a fire door from performing its intended function.

Invisible when the door is closed, Powermatic offers less of a target for the vandal or would-be prankster. Even when the door is open, the fact that Powermatic®’s major mechanical parts are concealed within the door, or their exposure is limited, means that the door closer reduces the likelihood of damage through vandalism.

Anti-ligature and anti-barricade
Powermatic® is the perfect choice where anti-ligature and anti-barricade measures need to be taken. It is particularly well-suited for use with continuous hinges.

The risk of ligature can be present in any door installation that is not constantly monitored, whether in psychiatric facilities and secure accommodation or even schools and other educational establishments.

Powermatic®’s total concealment, as well as the absence of surface mounted control arms and boxes, obviously mean that when the door is closed, the door closer is out of sight and cannot be used as a point of ligature. Additionally, Powermatic® can be installed within 300mm of the bottom of the door, a height at which harm through ligature is considered impossible in most circumstances.

Powermatic® is also recommended for use in anti-barricade systems, which prevents a patient locking themselves, and others, in a room.

Improved hygiene
Where hygiene is a consideration, the absence of significant horizontal surfaces presented by Powermatic® minimises exposure to germs and detritus, whilst its low mounting height makes it easier to reach, enhancing hygiene and simplifying cleaning.

It is these advantages that have made Powermatic® controlled, concealed door closer so popular across all sectors of the building industry, including social housing schools, hospitals, secure units, care homes, hotel, leisure and commercial developments.

Used in conjunction with a concealed hinge arrangement, both Powermatic® and Powermatic® Free Swing make the ideal door specification for those wishing to reap the rewards of hidden hardware.

For the doorset manufacturer, both door closers allow doors to be shown to their fullest potential. They are easily accommodated within standard routing procedures, not only offering the potential to satisfy discerning specifications, but also to extend the manufacturer’s product ranges into new areas of application.

Samuel Heath also manufactures a comprehensive range of door and window fittings at its Birmingham factory, exacting precise control over production and finish to assure quality of the finished product.

Further information on product selection and application can be obtained from Samuel Heath on 0121 766 4200 or at www.perko-powermatic.co.uk .

A Tale of Two Mercedes: Cars with Unique Pasts Announced for Bonhams Mercedes-Benz Sale

Bonhams is pleased to announce two additions to its inaugural Mercedes-Benz Sale on 12 July at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

A 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet with a swinging Parisian past, estimated at EU €1.8-2.4 million, and an early WW1 period 22/50hp Mercedes from 1915 with an estimate of EU €650,000-750,000, are two of the latest consignments to the Sale, which will feature a choice selection of some 40 motor cars manufactured by the renowned German marque over its more than century-long history.

This ultra rare 540K Cabriolet A, with chassis number 130946, was ordered on June 3rd 1936, and is confirmed to have been one of just ten cars which left the factory built to its particular specification and equipped with the more powerful 5.4-liter engine, but in the traditional-style body with two rear mounted spare-wheels. Its bodywork was completed at the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen factory.

The car was collected by its first owner in October of that same year from Mercedes-Benz Paris. Proprietor of the well-known Parisian nightclub Bar Americain 'La Roulotte', he would park the Mercedes out front while the venue hosted world-renowned artists of the day, such as Edith Piaf and Django Reinhardt. The car remained in his possession for over 70 years, until 2007; the car has never left French soil since being delivered new to Paris.

A stunning full restoration was carried out by the original owner, with the engine, gearbox, axles, brakes, suspension and starter all fully rebuilt. Cosmetically no details were left untouched and the car received a new top, upholstery and interior; the instruments were rebuilt and all chrome parts were redone.

Having remained in the same ownership for such a long period of time this superb Cabriolet A retains all of its original major components: chassis, engine and bodywork. The car comes with archive photographs, an original service invoice dated August 25th 1946 and a fully documented photographic restoration record, together with the relevant invoice.

The 1915 22/50hp Mercedes to be offered has a unique and comprehensively documented history. Ordered in 1915, by one of the richest men in Sweden and a business partner of Alfred Nobel (of the Nobel Prize fame), the car was built to his special modifications for use on his country estate in Belgium, particularly when shooting game. The original ‘vehicle order’ lists the requirements, such as electric starter and exhaust valve; he also had the track width of 142 cm extended to 154 cm and the suspension raised, so that on dirt roads the car would not get caught in the deep furrows created by horse-drawn carriages.

Upon its completion, the story of this car took a strange detour. With WW1 raging, rather than being delivered to the buyer, it was repossessed by the German Army, repainted grey, and used as a service vehicle for General August von Mackensen. At the end of May 1918, a new order from Sweden was placed again with a note for the car to be delivered “prompt after the war”. In April 1919, after a complete refurbishment by Mercedes-Benz, the car was shipped to Stockholm where it remained with the same owner until 1970.

Carefully restored to ‘as new’ condition by the second Swedish owner, the car retains its original coachwork and mechanical components. All renewed parts such as leather, soft-top fabric, etc. were restored to period specification and the car comes with outstanding documentary materials and photographs- even the original driver’s cap!

The Mercedes-Benz Museum maps the entire history of the world’s oldest car manufacturer with a unique variety of exhibits. A total of 1500 exhibits, including 160 vehicles, can be seen on an area of 16,500 square metres.
