IN2 Access & Control Ltd. Announces Expansion of Reseller Network for Self-Assembly Safety Edge Range

Shropshire-based company expands reseller network for popular ExpertSystem safety edge kits from Swiss manufacturer BBC Bircher Smart Access.

FAAC (UK) have been a long-standing reseller of the ExpertSystem self assembly kits in addition to the pre-manufactured safety edges. IN2 Access announces two further resellers that will offer ExpertSystem “kits” at their trade counters.

ExpertSystem kits will now be available for local collection from the companies below (as well as directly from IN2 Access):

  • Specialized Security Products (SSP) in Buntingford, Hertfordshire
  • North Valley Forge in Nelson, Lancashire
  • FAAC (UK) Ltd. in Basingstoke, Hampshire

Resellers will hold stock of the self-assembly safety edge kits, with customers able to collect same-day if needed. Additional partners will be added to the IN2 Access “approved” ExpertSystem Reseller Network with the aim of providing customers with a nationwide collection option.

Since its launch in 2018, BBC Bircher’s ExpertSystem self-assembly safety edges for automatic gates and doors has become a top selling range within the IN2 Access product portfolio. Superior engineering and ease-of-assembly means less time onsite and reduced maintenance costs.

“As the official UK distribution partner for BBC Bircher, we are excited about the opportunity to expand our Reseller Network of ExpertSystem,” says IN2 Access Managing Director Derek Foreman.
“We know installers and maintenance providers can often benefit from same-day collection so we hope the expansion of our reseller network will fulfil this requirement, whilst still offering a despatch service from our Shropshire headquarters.”

The ExpertSystem safety edges kits are available in six profile sizes, each kit containing enough components to make a complete edge in either 1.5, 2, or 2.5m standard lengths. Stocking levels at each reseller location may vary.

“We have long standing relationships with our three resellers,” Derek explains.
“They all have great name recognition that many in the automatic gate industry know and trust. We are building on that relationship and may expand the range of products they offer at their location as the reseller network program grows.”

To see ExpertSystem in action, IN2 Access will present at the Specialized Security Products Open Day event on 13 May in Buntingford, which coincides with the official announcement of the ExpertSystem Reseller Network across all three partners.

The SSP Open Day event is co-hosted by Roger Technology and features product demonstrations, training, and complimentary refreshments.

Tickets to the event are free with more details at https://www.specialized-security.co.uk/

Performance and Choice - Entrance Doors from Hörmann UK

Along with visual style, security and thermal efficiency are high on the list of priorities for homeowners looking to replace their entrance doors.

In response, Hörmann UK has developed a range of aluminium entrance doors, together with their Thermo45 and Thermo65 steel doors that offer installers a selection of premium doors that are easy to install, thermally efficient and available in a wide range of styles and finishes.

Elegant and robust, Hörmann aluminium entrance doors offer the highest levels of performance providing structural stability, together with excellent acoustic and thermal insulation. All aluminium doors are fitted with RC3 level, 5-point locking systems as standard, offering householders high levels of protection against break-in and added peace of mind.

The ThermoCarbon entrance door is constructed from high strength aluminium, with a high-tech leaf profile of a carbon glass-fibre hybrid material. Featuring a 100mm aluminium door leaf with a PU rigid foam infill, an internal leaf profile that is supported by a thermal break and a 111.5 mm aluminium door frame also with a thermal break, the door can offer an impressive U value as low as 0.47 W/M2K.

Excellent acoustic insulation of up to 39dB can also be achieved. Whilst the ThermoSafe range features a sturdy 73mm thick door leaf, with an 82mm aluminium frame and can achieve a U value of 0.87 W/M2K.

With styles ranging from modern and contemporary through to classic design options, Hörmann aluminium doors will look good in a wide variety of building styles. An XXL version is available which offers generously proportioned doors up to 3000m in height adding flexibility and enhancing visual appeal.

Available in a choice of 12 preferred RAL colours including Traffic white and 8 structured matt colours, together with a large selection of door hardware and glazing options, householders can design and tailor a door to suit their specific needs.

The Hörmann Thermo range of steel doors are available in two-door leaf widths – the Thermo65 at 65mm and the Thermo45 at 45mm. Both offer solid construction and exception thermal insulation and can achieve U values as low as 0.87 W/M2K.

Impressive security is in-built with all doors equipped with a multi-point security lock and RC2 security equipment available as an option.

To add to an already impressive selection of door styles, several new designs have been introduced featuring additional glazing options. Whilst the introduction of one-way plate glass, which is also available for side elements and transom lights, provides an additional opportunity to add light and creative design whilst also protecting privacy.

Further enhancing the ability to create a unique front door is the introduction of a range of accessories in elegant Jet-black, which mirror the latest trend for black interior fittings popular in both kitchens and bathrooms. The Thermo 65 black-edition provides both exterior and interior lever handles and matching stainless steel glazing frames which create a sleek, modern look.

The choice of Hörmann preferred colours available has also been expanded to include a selection of on-trend greys such as Basalt grey, Dusty grey, and Grey aluminium. Designed to complement modern architecture these new preferred colours are also available in the Hörmann sectional garage door range, which means that matching entrance doors and garage doors have never been easier.

Barrier-free entrance is available through a range of automation options that operate with both the aluminium and steel door ranges. Hörmann doors can be opened and closed via radio buttons or a Hörmann BiSecur hand-held transmitter, whilst the Hörmann BlueSecur Bluetooth app provides control from a Smartphone.

The availability of an online door configuration enables homeowners to conveniently build and test many design and product variations on either a PC or tablet. Door type, surface finish, colour and size can be selected, and the recommended retail price can be estimated from the configured door. By uploading a picture of their home, consumers can then see their selected door in-situ aiding the buying decision.

Goodwood Festival of Speed Central Feature to celebrate 50 years of BMW M

Goodwood is proud to announce that the Central Feature at the 2022 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard will celebrate BMW M. The sculpture will pay homage to five decades of the division and showcase some of its most iconic models.

Since the first Central Feature in 1997, the Goodwood Festival of Speed has become synonymous with the bold and innovative sculptures which each year celebrate the extraordinary achievements of a different manufacturer or milestone.

BMW’s Motorsport division was launched in May 1972 with only 35 employees. However, it soon became one of the most successful racing departments in the world. Today, BMW M GmbH stands for compelling driving every day on the road, as well as on the racetrack. 2022 sees BMW M celebrate its 50th anniversary, with a number of exciting launches and celebrations planned throughout the year, including the Festival of Speed’s monumental Central Feature.

Attendees of the Goodwood Festival of Speed can look forward to seeing BMW M’s most celebrated vehicles take to the Hill across the weekend, with many of its famous drivers behind the wheel alongside other special moments. BMW will be present in two main locations; BMW M at Trackside and within the iconic Stable Yard – both locations will enable visitors to see the latest cars up close.

BMW was previously honoured with the 2016 Central Feature when the marque celebrated its centenary with a sensational gathering of cars at the Festival of Speed. The Central Feature was unveiled in a dramatic firework display accompanied by a cavalcade of BMW’s finest motors sweeping up the Hill; while the BMW M Avenue showcased 12 iconic current and historic cars.

Further details of BMW M’s presence at the Goodwood Festival of Speed will be announced in the coming weeks.

Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M said:
“As BMW M, we feel honoured to play a very special role at this year's Festival of Speed. For our 50th anniversary, we couldn't imagine a better place to celebrate our products with fans of the brand. I am particularly looking forward to unveiling a certain vehicle to the world’s public for the first time - a vehicle we have been waiting a long time for.”

The Duke of Richmond said:
“We are delighted to be celebrating 50 years of BMW’s hugely successful Motorsport division at this year’s Festival of Speed, and it is especially fitting as we prepare to honour ‘The Innovators - Masterminds of Motorsport’. BMW M’s success can of course be attributed to half a century of innovation and we look forward to honouring the marque’s past, present and future achievements at Goodwood in June.”

Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, is being held between Thursday 23 - Sunday 26 June 2022.

New Chair for ADSA

Mark Ayton, Managing Director of Record UK, has been elected Chair of the Automatic Door Association for the next two years.

He took on the role last month (April) – at a key time for the Association as it prepares to launch several new initiatives that will support member organisations, their teams and future workforce development through training and apprenticeships.

Mark has enjoyed a career, spanning more than 30 years, and has held senior management roles in the US and the UK. A physics and electronics graduate of the University of Exeter, he spent 14 years working in the fire detection industry at Honeywell before joining Record UK and the automatic door industry in 2017.  He lives in the Midlands with his wife, Kim and has one grown-up daughter.

Of his 2017 appointment to lead Record UK, Mark said:
“I wanted to work in a different industry after 14 years in fire safety. It is not totally unrelated, as both involve products with safety standards for commercial buildings. I was also keen to run a smaller business because I'm very people-centric”.

He continued: “I am honoured to take on the role of ADSA Chair and build on the great work that has been achieved in recent years. ADSA has come on leaps and bounds in both professionalism and the impact it's having in the industry. Ken Price as Managing Director has a lot to do with this and I’m really looking forward to working with him to continue this progress.”

“I hope that my experience will help ADSA become even stronger.  Having been a board member of FIA (Fire Industry Association), I know how this long-established association developed to create one voice for the fire industry. I think there's the same opportunity for ADSA in the automatic door industry.”

ADSA Managing Director Ken Price, said that he looked forward to working with Mark as Chair:
“Mark is held in high esteem as a leader within the automatic door industry. He has a remarkable mind, eye for detail and considerable experience within the wider engineering and construction industry. Having played an active role on ADSA’s executive committee for the past four years, I know that he will be hands-on in helping us achieve our goals and assist us in achieving further growth and success.”
The Automatic Door Association (ADSA) was formed in 1985 to establish quality and safety standards for the automatic door industry. It developed the first industry code of practice which covered safety aspects of automatic doors for pedestrian use. This subsequently formed the basis of BS 7036: 1988, a code of practice for the provision and installation of safety devices for automatic, power-operated pedestrian door systems.

Its membership includes manufacturers, suppliers, installers and service providers of automatic doors – from global companies to sole traders. ADSA member organisations supply more than 75% of the UK market.

DHF provides clarity on CSCS card scheme

In clarifying how one can obtain a relevant CSCS card, and the steps required in order to do so, DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) has reiterated that the best and most appropriate CSCS card comes from the industry.

In 2019, the Tamworth-based trade association launched its CSCS-approved card partner scheme in collaboration with the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA). The DHF CSCS (Blue Skilled) card provision is for those who work with industrial doors, domestic garage doors, automated gates & traffic barriers and metal or timber doors, and although not a legislative requirement, CSCS cards are supported by the government and provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job that they are doing.

“DHF remains the only trade association offering this card for the industry and in order to obtain a Blue Skilled worker card, individuals also need the relevant NVQ for the industry they work in,” explains DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
“We are aware that there are some providers that will give an associated discipline card that is not specific to our industry. To Site Managers, we would say this: the best way to know that the person working on your site has the Blue Skilled worker card from the industry and for the industry is by their obtaining the NVQ level 2 in automated gates and door systems, the qualification that demonstrates their proficiency and that they have achieved the correct level of training.

“The NVQ is a vocational qualification that assesses the learner over a period of time to ensure that they have the right vocational experience and can do the job,” continues Patricia.
“It is important that they know the specific standards and legislation involved in installing a gate or door system. Detailed knowledge of the safety requirements for gate installations for instance, is a must; evidence suggests that many historic incidents occurred on automated gates due to mechanical failure or design fault, not electrical issues. It is therefore important for the person working on the gate to understand what a safe gate looks like.
“The NVQ process not only involves a comprehensive assessment on-site, but learners are also questioned about the legislation and standards relating to the industry. It is a holistic approach that reassures the industry, and Site Managers that the person presenting the CSCS card offered through DHF is qualified in their field.
“DHF continues to drive standards in ensuring that construction site workers are appropriately trained, and as such, created a joint venture, Entrance Systems Alliance (ESA), with the ADSA to offer the industry specific NVQ. In this way, we are playing our part in improving safety on UK construction sites.”

For further information, or to apply for a CSCS card, please visit the DHF website: https://www.dhfonline.org.uk/cscs-card.htm

To find out more information about gaining the industry specific NVQ, visit the ESA website https://www.esa.uk.com/

Are Employers Still Liable for Home Worker Accidents?

Kevin Ashley - CEO and founder of the healthcare-oriented learning management system, myAko - has developed an incident reporting system and training for home-based or remote workers to help communicate and enhance the wellbeing of remote working employees.

Kevin has kindly shared his extensive expertise into this topic, in the hope of giving employees the safe working environment they need to go about their day.

Is a risk assessment necessary for remote working?

The working environment of an employee must, by law, be suitably risk-assessed by a qualified individual, which in most cases is the employer. Many of these sub-regulations don’t apply to remote working, however, as the employer is unlikely to be able to carry out the assessment themselves. Instead, self-assessments should be conducted by the employee, in collaboration with the employer, to limit the liability of the employer should any damages arise.

How liable are employers to remote working issues?

Because of the blurred legal guidelines surrounding this topic, many workplace health, safety and welfare regulations do not transfer over to employees’ domestic workplace. Despite this, employers may still be liable for any incidents that occur as a result of workplace negligence. Negligence is the failure to satisfactorily take care of employees, and one way to eliminate this liability is the creation of an adequate risk assessment. If an employee was to suffer an injury at work and had not been provided with a suitable risk assessment explaining how to avoid the incident, then the employer is likely liable to be sued for damages.

What can employers do?

According to the ‘Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations’, remote employees should be assessed to the same standard as other workers, with employers just as liable for any incidents arising outside the office.

All physical and psychological risks should be recorded within the risk assessment, enabling the employer to provide sufficient information and support to the employee. The employee should also be provided with suitable training, ensuring they are able to not only complete the assessment but also help themselves to work in a safe environment.

Promat UK Helps Fire Door Manufacturers and Installers Raise the Bar

Promat PYROSEC Doors

Fire door manufacturers and installers can reduce the risk of inappropriate or untested materials being used in their fire rated doorsets through Promat UK’s wide range of technically advanced finished products, raw materials and components, all under one roof.

As a leading manufacturer of fire, thermal and acoustic solutions for the door and fire-resistant glazing sectors, Promat has a unique perspective and range of products to meet different customer requirements along the construction supply chain.

For clients seeking a complete manufactured and installed solution, Promat offers fully glazed steel framed doors in its PYROSEC® Doors range, plus fire rated timber doorsets. Both solutions give customers traceability and the peace of mind that their bespoke fire doors are designed and manufactured under Promat’s control, and installation can also be checked for conformity.

Promat Doors at Hartfield manor

Promat PYROSEC® Doors are available as single or double options with EI30 or EI60 fire protection available. They are also designed to integrate into the Promat SYSTEMGLAS® range of fire-resistant glazing systems, which provides glazing for numerous applications in four different framing options.

The Promat timber fire door is also designed for use with SYSTEMGLAS®, specifically the Ligna timber frame glazing system. This contemporary passive fire protection solution allows stylish timber glazed features to be created with integrated single or double fire doors offering EI60 performance.

For door manufacturers, Promat also represents a ‘one-stop shop’ solution for components and raw materials – helping them reduce risk given its ability to provide key structural materials for the doorset’s construction to meet the required performance standards.

Importantly too, Promat’s wealth of technical expertise can help with the design and specification of products, ensuring they are integrated into the doorset in the correct way to meet the performance expectations, from FD30 up to FD120.

Promat UK’s range includes several options for glazed panels, including PYROSEC® glass, along with PROMSEAL® PL strip for intumescent seals and a non-combustible calcium silicate fire protection board, PROMATECT® H. This can be used to form the core material of fire doors as well as provide insulation strips where required in an assembly. It can also, in certain conditions, be used to provide extra insulation to enable the upgrading of doors.

Cath McLean, Segment Manager at Promat UK says:
“Remember that a fire doorset is considered in its entirety, so only ‘tested’ materials must be used in its construction, and these must be those prescribed in the test.
“There is no scope for substitution of tested materials, because this may seriously affect the overall performance of the doorset in the event of a fire. This is a reputational risk that no professional doorset manufacturer can afford to take.
“Unfortunately, if you source fire protection materials from numerous suppliers, such as the glass from one place and the frame and intumescent seals from another, this is what can result. That’s why Promat UK, as a single-source supplier, takes away the ambiguity and helps manufacturers deliver dependable fire doors.”

Jukeboxes on wheels: Fins and Chrome American classics at London Concours 2022

The London Concours, presented by Breguet, has revealed the latest spectacular class from this summer’s must-go-to event: Fins and Chrome.

Renowned for assembling the most stunning line-up of classic and collector machinery, for 2022’s concours the grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company will provide a backdrop for pristine examples of the gargantuan ‘jukeboxes on wheels’ that were everyday sights on the roads of mid-century America.

Running from the 28th to 30th of June, the London Concours will once again unveil a brilliant array of rare cars in the heart of The City, for three days of unparalleled automotive indulgence.

Among the astonishing exhibits in the Fins and Chrome class – curated and judged by Classic American magazine – and sponsored by insurance specialist Adrian Flux, will be a breath-taking turquoise 1957 Dodge Custom Royal convertible, which was brought to the UK after a previous US owner had carried out a painstaking restoration.

Powered by a Super D500 325ci Hemi V8 teamed with a state-of-the-art push-button transmission, the car comes heavily loaded with period options and accessories – the most intriguing of which is the factory-fitted Highway Hi-Fi in-dash record player. Perfect for cruising to your favourite ’50s sounds.

The HAC’s immaculate lawns will also play host to another Mopar: a 1960 Chrysler 300F convertible. The marque’s ‘letter car’ 300s are historically considered to have established the muscle car genre – one that saw monster, often virtually full-race engines fitted in two-door, four-seater sports coupes designed for high-performance driving on the street.

Initially introduced in 1955 with the C-300 (America’s first mass-produced domestic model to boast 300bhp), the letter-car series continued well into the ’60s, packing big-capacity, high-horsepower V8s.

With ‘triple-black’ paint, soft-top and interior trim, this elegant 300F is a pristine specimen of the luxury automobile that became known as the ‘banker’s hot rod’. It certainly justifies that moniker; under the hood sits a 375bhp, 413ci Golden Lion V8 which boasts a magnificent cross-ram induction system. This car is one of what is believed to be only 78 survivors from the original 248 convertibles built, and the sole triple-black model in existence.

Everyone recognises the iconic 1957 Chevrolet – as immortalised in Billie Jo Spears’ 1975 song Blanket on the Ground – and the black Bel Air two-door hard-top presented at the London Concours is a stunning example of this legendary automobile.

More than 1.5 million Chevy passenger cars passed into customers’ hands in 1957, putting it among America’s biggest sellers for that model year and crowning a successful three-year run of the 1955-57 so-called ‘tri-Chevys’. This 220bhp, 283ci V8 car was one of the first 7000, built at General Motors’ Oakland, California plant, and the owner found it in Salem, Oregon before embarking on an in-depth restoration.

Of course, in popular culture the ultimate Fins and Chrome car is the outrageous 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible, particularly when presented in pink – and a sensational example of this very machine will be the Fins and Chrome class’s crowning glory. In ’59 the premier marque built just 1,320 Biarritz soft-tops, which added even more sparkling trim and luxury accoutrements to the already lavishly embellished American icon.

Other entrants in the Fins and Chrome class include further superb examples of the ‘Standard of the World’ Cadillacs, from 1957 and 1958, as well as a gullwing-finned, tastefully modified 1959 Impala from GM stablemate Chevrolet. A range-topping 1958 Park Lane convertible – one of 853 built by Ford Motor Company division Mercury – has to be seen to be believed, not least because its ‘continental kit’ rear-mounted spare wheel adds several feet in length to what is already a colossal automobile.

Finally, we haven’t forgotten the so-called ‘independent’ manufacturers – the brands that bravely went it alone but didn’t always stay the course. With only 276 built, Packard’s beautiful limited-edition 1956 Caribbean soft-top represents the last hurrah of that once-grand marque, and ensured the company left the industry on a high note; Packard sadly went out of business just two years later.

These Fins and Chrome design classics, and their counterparts spanning decades from around the world, will be on display at the Honourable Artillery Company this summer, at the capital’s ultimate automotive extravaganza. Further exciting class announcements will follow soon, as we build towards the sixth edition of our unmissable event.

Andrew Evans, London Concours Director, said:
“With cars from each of the American automotive industry’s ‘Big Three’ – Ford, General Motors and Chrysler – plus an example from ‘independent’ Packard, encompassing a rainbow of colours and variety of body styles, this year’s Fins and Chrome class represents the very best of the rock and roll era. Their style, luxury, innovation and sheer size exemplified that golden period from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, and we guarantee that the spectacular display will provide a riot of colour on the Honourable Artillery Company lawns.”
He continued: “Guests to the HAC will be treated to an unprecedented array of cars, along with a decadent range of food and drink options, and a carefully curated line-up of luxury brands and boutiques. London Concours 2022 is set to be another occasion of total automotive indulgence.”
