New Digital Access Solutions training to be provided by Abloy UK

Abloy UK has announced the dates for two new courses at its Digital Access Solutions Academy, offering training on its Aperio and Incedo systems.

The Digital Access Solutions Academy is a purpose-built facility to showcase, work with, install and test the company’s extensive range of products, with a particular focus on new digital solutions and ecosystems.

The courses provided at the Academy provide delegates with the knowledge and practical skills to ensure they specify and install the right digital access products in suitable applications, with hands-on experience.

Ian Miller, Digital Access Solutions Academy Manager at Abloy UK said:
“Research[1] shows that digital access control solutions are becoming the new norm, with 77% of end-users currently operating an electronic system, 38% of which feature wireless access too.
“The shift towards remote and flexible working has created the need for more agile access control, and an easy way to manage access permissions with instant delivery, increased security, and sustainability.
“With this in mind, we have developed our Incedo and Aperio solutions to offer a secure, flexible and convenient way to control the movement of people in a building, and our hands-on training courses offer a comprehensive overview of how to effectively specify and install the systems.”

Aperio wireless devices are the easiest way to extend the reach of an access control system or to replace mechanical locks with intelligent access control. Because they operate wire-free, battery-powered Aperio devices are fast and cost-effective to install and save money in operating and maintenance costs.

During the course, delegates will understand all the technical aspects of designing a system, site survey and how to commission and fault find. The course has been designed with a mixture of theory and practical exercises, equipping attendees with the tools to specify Aperio access control products with confidence.

Incedo is a flexible security ecosystem that combines ASSA ABLOY’s world-leading range of wireless locks and other access hardware with flexible software, multiple management options and the ability to scale on demand, in any direction.

Incedo connects security software and hardware within a single, seamless platform with the ability to have complete remote control of premises and manage the ever-changing movement of people across multiple sites.

During the course, participants will learn suitable applications for Incedo products, what the system architecture looks like and how to integrate ASSA ABLOY’s Wireless Access Control range.

Additionally, delegates will learn how to configure and commission using Incedo Lite software and how Abloy can support you in winning more business.

Incedo Training Dates start on 20/7/22 through to 23/11/22 – see the full list here.

Aperio Training Dates start on 21/7/22 through to 08/12/22 – see the full list here.

Every Day is a School Day With ABUS

The first duty that any education establishment has to its students and staff is to keep them safe and secure. But that does not have to mean that they should feel like prisons, with caretakers carrying around huge bunches of keys that are impossible to keep track of.

The way that the doors and hardware work is absolutely vital to how the whole premises operates. We look at ways that ABUS access control and cylinder systems can help keep everything and everyone safe without impacting the smooth running of the institution.

Keeping everyone in the school safe and secure is vital. Both in terms of their physical security and in controlling access around the building. This poses challenges for security and access control with many people – staff, pupils, and visitors - coming and going at different times, often with different levels of access, who demand quick and easy-to-use systems, coupled with security for everyone inside. This makes the issue of security and controlling access complex.

wAppLoxx Pro from ABUS is a digital access control system that could provide a solution. These secure, electronic “smart” cylinders fit into any standard cylinder profile and can be controlled with a fob, card or via smartphone through our wAppLoxx app. You can even incorporate a transponder into the head of a mechanical key enabling you to operate both your traditional mechanical locks as well as electronic ones.

Offering comprehensive access management for up to 160 doors and up to five hundred users, and multiple access control mechanisms. This makes wAppLoxx the perfect plug-and-play wireless access control system for schools and colleges. Information about the wAppLoxx system status, analytics and any changes that need to be made can be accessed securely in real-time via PC, smartphone, or tablet. This allows the building manager to grant or deny access to users across the site and also access rights can be assigned for specific periods of time.

The ABUS wAppLoxx system can communicate seamlessly with ABUS security, surveillance, and alarm systems to provide a fully integrated security system. And because the central hub updates every thirty minutes any changes required by lost keys, security breaches or changes in staff can be made immediately in real-time by reprogramming fobs online remotely instead of having to issue new keys or change cylinders across the board.

wAppLoxx can be used on any door since the locks are available in double knob cylinders (one-sided and double-sided), half-cylinders, electronic padlocks and a wall reader making it possible to control electronic doors, high traffic doors and automated gates, electric strikes, lifts, barriers, and turnstiles, with 50,000 cycles before the batteries need changing.

For areas that need extra security such as labs, computer rooms, or offices with sensitive information, the ABUS Bravus system offers a top-level, no-compromise, security standard, the perfect choice for education settings.

Bravus’s 14mm core, enables a thicker stronger and more durable reversible with horizontal keyway than gives enormous flexibility enabling large and complex master key system capability hand in hand with the patent protection offering high-security standard in protecting against unauthorised key copying. Because the key is smooth with no sharp edges it's less likely to be used as a weapon and Bravus cylinders can be fitted with a ‘classroom function’ so that students cannot barricade themselves into a classroom or lock a teacher out.

One of the most long-standing headaches for school buildings is managing student lockers, lost keys being the main culprit. The 158 KC is a secure four-digit combination padlock with an override key that can be used to read and reset the combination so the padlock can be reused time and time again. This will massively reduce the number of replacement padlocks making the ABUS 158 KC the sustainable and cost-effective choice for lockers.

These ABUS systems are all particularly valuable for school settings since they offer the flexibility and versatility to allow for expansion, new buildings and changes of purpose making the whole system future-proof. So, if you are tasked with upgrading or replacing a security system in a school or college, ABUS can offer a full support service, starting from a site survey/audit and master keying service.

ABUS' experts can offer advice on the best security and access control systems for the project: from padlocks for perimeter gates to locks that can withstand challenging conditions like swimming pools and changing rooms, and make the running of schools and colleges less hassle and more secure than ever.

You can find out more about how to make schools work, safely and securely for everyone here.

Bradbury Group achieves CE Fire Accreditation on Security Door range

Bradbury Group Steel Door with CE label

Bradbury Group is pleased to announce that its entire range of security-certified doors has achieved external fire CE Certification, including its Security Rated 4 (SR4) doors.

Each of the LPCB LPS 1175 certified doorsets has achieved this status, making the group one of the UK’s first to achieve both security and fire certification on external steel doors. The doorsets were tested by the independent certification body Efectis, and the accreditation covers the performance of the product in relation to its resistance to fire, smoke control, and self-closing & release ability.

The importance of fire doors

The Grenfell Tower fire in 2017 had far-reaching consequences for the construction sector. Since the tragedy, regulations have become much more stringent, with more of a focus on ensuring companies comply. Whilst steel doors have been tested for fire integrity for many years, there has been an increasing emphasis on ensuring security doors also come with fire protection.

Which products are CE approved?

This latest step for the group means their M2M2, M2M3 and M2M4 product ranges are available as external fire doors with CE certification, providing security protection up to Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) Loss Prevention Standard (LPS) 1175 SR4.

The range of CE-approved products includes single, leaf and a half, and double doors, available to open inward or outward. The doors are manufactured to include security hardware and escape bars and can provide fire integrity for up to 240 minutes, depending on the choice of door.
“We are excited to have achieved this certification for our doorsets” says Anil Patel, Group Sales and Marketing Director.
“As one of the first physical security manufacturers to have achieved this on our range, we can now provide our customers with bespoke external doors, offering added valuable through both building security and fire protection. Whilst the current range has restrictions on design and hardware, we are working on expanding our range to include vision, side and over panels.”
About CE Certification

CE certification is compulsory for all external fire doors in the UK and Europe. This was effective from the 1st November 2019 making it a legal requirement as part of European building regulations, that all externally rated doorsets are CE marked to EN 16034 and BS EN 14351-1. Doors covered under this standard, must by law carry a certificate proving its conformance to both standards.

The next phase for the group is to ensure accreditation to UKCA. Andy Edser, Engineering Director commented:
“In January 2023, it will be a legal requirement for doors to achieve UKCA certification if being sold and installed in the United Kingdom. We are working hard with the accreditation body to ensure we have this in place for our external fire and security doors by the end of the year.”

Zap to the Future… EV Driving Experiences Surge Ahead of Classic Cars

New research conducted by TrackDays.co.uk has revealed that electric vehicles (EVs) are now zapping ahead of classic favourites in popularity for driving experiences, with three times as many people opting to take to the track in an EV.

Indeed, the experience provider's booking data has revealed that its Tesla Model S 'Ludicrous' P90D Thrill has three times the amount of bookings than the Four British Classic Blast with High Speed Passenger Ride.

The high-performance nature of the Tesla may account for the volume of bookings at TrackDays.co.uk in the last year, with the American saloon car accelerating from 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds in 'ludicrous' mode. The sheer speed and performance available could be enough to turn the tide in favour of electrification.

Furthermore, the latest figures also point towards a significant uptake of EVs in the UK, with 92,512 Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations year-to-date, compared to 54,051 registrations in 2021. This amounts to a 71 percent increase, showing more people are moving towards more sustainable vehicles.*

Dan Jones, operations manager at TrackDays.co.uk, commented:
"It seems that Brits are gearing up for a transition to all-electric travel in the coming years, with more motorists looking to test the exhilarating Tesla Model S at circuits up and down the country."
However, the allure of driving classic cars such as an Aston Martin DB5, Caterham Seven or Jaguar E-Type in the 'Four British Classic Blast' can often be too much for petrol heads to ignore.
Dan added: "Experiencing the true heritage of motoring with some classic British cars, such as the Aston Martin DB5, will always be an enticing prospect. With the smell of fuel and burning rubber, the interest in this experience isn't expected to dwindle."
"However, it is highly likely that most of us will own an EV in the future, and driving one on a race track gives motorists the chance to experience EVs, which might persuade them to convert to electric when replacing their current model."
Visit TrackDays.co.uk for a vast selection of EV and classic car experiences. Furthermore, check out the Tesla Model S 'Ludicrous' P90D Thrill page to learn more about driving this high-performance EV, or have a look on the Four British Classic Blast with High Speed Passenger Ride page to learn more about driving some of the most British iconic cars of decades gone by.

Soterian Slim Letterplate Receives Certifire Approval

UAP, the specialist in locks and hardware for doors and windows, has secured a Certifire certification for its Soterian Slim TS008 letterplate.

Designed in-house by UAP, the Soterian Slim is the most compact TS008-compliant letterplate ever made. The certification means the product can be safely installed in timber FD30 fire doors without the need for further testing.

Julian Roberts, Technical Services Director at UAP, said:
“The Certifire certification follows a rigorous assessment. This involves factory production audits at each site where the product is manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001 and additional requirements of the Certifire scheme.
“This process has independently verified the performance and quality of the Soterian Slim, ensuring installers and end-users can make an informed decision when selecting the product.”

Designed for 44mm – 70mm composite, timber and uPVC doors, the Soterian Slim measures just 298mm x 98mm, with a flap projection of 14mm. The design includes an innovative, pivoting serrated stay system, which limits the flap opening to 39 degrees to protect against key fishing and lock manipulation.

As well as providing robust security and fire safety features, the product eliminates the issue of bulkiness on the interior face of the door. This provides a more aesthetic solution and ensures the door can open fully without damaging the letterplate or interior wall.

UKAS accredited, Certifire is recognised by regulatory authorities worldwide as an international mark of fire safety across a diverse range of passive fire products. The third-party passive fire product certification scheme assures performance, quality, reliability and traceability of products and systems. The certification process was carried out by Warringtonfire, a global leader in fire safety services.

New Merger Opens New Doors for Future Growth

Two leading suppliers of industrial doors are merging their UK operations into a new entity as they target future growth.

Nassau Industrial Doors Ltd is becoming part of the ASSA ABLOY Group, bringing together two of the UK’s leaders in industrial access. As of 1st July 2022, Nassau formally joined ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems Ltd, with the new entity known as ASSA ABLOY Industrial Door Solutions.

John Burton, Managing Director of the newly merged businesses, said:
“Our new name reflects the merger of two leading suppliers in the industrial door market. By combining our joint skills and capabilities we can offer the most comprehensive portfolio of products in the UK, and draw on extensive operational excellence delivered by both brands.”
The enhanced product range includes UK-manufactured industrial roller shutters, as well as both ASSA ABLOY and Nassau brands of overhead sectional doors. This is complemented by a market-leading proposition for high-speed and specialist application doors and docking products.
“We will support ASSA ABLOY and Nassau products with our 24/7/365 after-sales care, which includes the UK’s largest national network of service technicians, fully trained on the entire product portfolio,” added John. “In addition, we are further enhancing customer service with a dedicated UK spare parts centre, located in Stoke-on-Trent, which will go live in the third quarter of 2022.”

Nassau Industrial Doors was founded in 1970 to supply, install and service high-quality industrial, commercial, and retail door systems. Its products are ISO 9001:2015 approved and Nassau is a member of the Door and Hardware Federation, Constructionline, CHAS, and SAFEcontractor.

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems Ltd has been operating in the UK since 1967 under the separate product brands of Crawford and Albany. These brands were brought together in 2011 as a single legal entity rebranded as ASSA ABLOY. Its full range includes directly manufactured sectional doors, high-speed doors, roller shutters, dock levellers, dock shelters, vehicle restraint systems and hinged doors – including fire and security-rated steel leaf doors.

The company has built an impressive reputation in the market by providing an innovative and broad product portfolio to deliver cost-effective and reliable solutions for convenient, safe, secure, attractive, and sustainable entrances. ASSA ABLOY was formed in 1994 through a merger of ASSA in Sweden and Abloy in Finland. It has grown into an international group with approximately 51,000 employees and operations in over 70 countries.
“We are proud to be extending the ASSA ABLOY family,” said John. “This will give our customers even more choice while also benefiting from the added strength that comes from being part of a global entity. The establishment of our new spare parts centre is a demonstration of that strength and of ASSA ABLOY’s commitment to the UK market.”

School’s 60k Investment Protected with SWS UK’s SeceuroDoor 75 Roller Shutters

In 2016 SWS UK distributor Alliance Security Installations installed a supersized SeceuroDoor 75 Steel Roller Shutter in an unusual setting.

A Stockport high school had recently invested in a £20k screen that would be used to advertise upcoming events, school news and sponsorship adverts. Positioned high up in the sports hall, the screen was vulnerable to damage from sporting activities so the school was keen to come up with a solution that would protect their investment.

Expert installer Alliance Security Installations recommended SWS UK’s SeceuroDoor 75, Roller Shutter, for its robust design, but also because of the simple electric operation which meant the screen could easily be displayed or hidden when needed. Perforated slats were chosen to allow partial vision of the TV even when the shutter was closed.

6 years later, the school is now part of an academy trust with multiple sites across Manchester and Stockport. Similar, high-value screens have since been installed at a further two locations within the trust, and following the success of the first protective shutter, Alliance Security was asked to carry out similar installs to secure the latest screens.

Like the previous installation, the new shutters needed to be offset from the wall by 300mm to ensure coverage of the screen with enough clearance. To do this, Alliance Security organised the fabrication of a bespoke steel frame and specialist brackets that would support the shutter in its unconventional position.

Another challenge, but one they had experienced during the 2016 project was installing a shutter 23ft from the ground. To ensure this was done safely, specialist equipment, including an elevating work platform was used. Fortunately, the team at Alliance Security holds an IPAF license which allowed them to operate the machinery without bringing in additional contractors.

Despite the challenges of this project, the experienced team of 3 installers was able to install each SeceuroDoor 75 Shutter in just 1 day, ensuring minimal disruption for the schools and their pupils. Additionally, Alliance Security installed a further 8 shutters from the SeceuroShield aluminium range across the trust’s 3 sites.

The client was delighted with each of the SeceuroShield Shutter installations but was particularly impressed with the ingenuity of the suspended frame and SeceuroDoor Shutter used to protect their valuable screens.

Abloy UK launches Cumulus Controller for keyless access

Abloy UK has unveiled its new Cumulus Controller that enables mobile access for a wide variety of security products, allowing organisations to upgrade their doors to operate without keys.

The Bluetooth-connected Cumulus enables most electric locks and other electronic door locking devices to open with a digital key on a mobile app, instead of a physical credential such as a key, card or fob.

The controller works with both Abloy products and hardware of any brand, using compatible wiring. Security is enhanced because this small device can be installed inside a cabinet or behind a door, which means the locking mechanism is concealed and is therefore difficult to manipulate from the outside, offering enhanced security.

Cumulus is operated with the Abloy mobile app on the user’s mobile phone over a Bluetooth Low Energy connection. The device is compatible with numerous electric lock types, including electromechanical, electric, motor and cabinet locks as well as alarm systems, electric strikes and latches.

The controller is designed for commercial properties and public spaces, including commercial buildings and offices parcel deliveries, cash-in-transit and construction. It can be managed with Abloy OS INCEDO or by integrating with a third-party system.

The solution offers well-documented application programming interfaces (APIs) and mobile software development kits (SDKs) for easy integration and partner solutions. The controller tracks usage, recording opening and locking events automatically, and these audit trails can be accessed in the management system.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director of Abloy UK, explained:
“Cumulus is the latest extension to the Abloy portfolio of keyless access solutions for professional use. Used in combination with other locking products available, it brings more access management options to different operating environments.
“Keyless access management not only prevents downtime and reduces operational costs, but also minimises energy-consuming travel, making daily processes work more efficiently.

“By developing and applying new technologies such as this, we can enable a safer, more connected world. We see a future where any door or hatch can be opened, locked and monitored from anywhere, in real-time, and our Cumulus controller is a major step towards this.”

Modern Coastal Architecture Created Using Technal Systems

Layered recessed glazed facades, created using TECHNAL aluminium systems, maximise occupant views and deliver a sleek seafront architectural focus for new, luxury apartments overlooking the beach at Gorey in Jersey.

Designed by Jersey-based Morris Architects, the development called The Beach comprises six apartments across four floors with undercroft car parking. Constructed by the main contractor, Camerons, the glazing package was coordinated by installer Style Windows who worked with fabricator Bonam and Berry Ltd to develop the specification.

Taking a contemporary approach to architectural design, architect Ricardo Marques specified the TECHNAL systems and explains how they have been incorporated: “Using layered glazed balconies and recessed facades, the building takes on a stylish streamlined appearance.

A sweeping corner provides an open, translucent structure, which minimises impact on the adjacent cottages and the beach. Secondary vertical columns have been used to help articulate the horizontal curved form of the balconies.”

Maximising the beautiful view for the building’s occupants using minimal profiles was a priority for the design team, without compromising the façade’s weather performance at this exposed location. This was achieved using a range of aluminium systems from the extensive TECHNAL range.

For easy access to the balcony area on the seaside elevation, the TECHNAL C160S Lift & Slide aluminium door system has been installed on each level, combining minimal sightlines and high thermal performance with a user-friendly slide action that glides, effortlessly. One of the door sets is an impressive 4.5m wide x 2.4m high, comprising only two panes, both of which are sliding.

To achieve the curved glazed corners at each storey level, TECHNAL Elegance 52 ST Curtain Walling has been fabricated to the specified quadrant, with an external radius of 1.9m, resulting in an impressive glass arc width of almost 3m.

Combined with the 2.4m floor-to-ceiling height, the Elegance 52 ST system has allowed for a truly breathtaking sweeping curve to the building. Internally, the mullion of the curtain walling aligns perfectly with the adjacent Lift & Slide doors, giving the façade an elegant, continuous flow across the elevation.
“This is the beauty of TECHNAL systems,” explains Ricardo Marques. “Even with the high wind loads of this exposed location, we have been able to create a sleek facade solution.”
Other TECHNAL systems used on the project include four single doors and one double-set from the Dualframe Dualsecure 75mm range as well as its STII Doors to the entrance and escape doors. A selection of Dualframe 75mm SI windows in top hung, side hung and pivot configurations have also been installed throughout the building.

Taking advantage of the dual colour facility and to combat the extreme weather conditions of this coastal location, externally the systems are anodised to Anolok™ Umber 543 in contrast with the white rendered walls. Internally, a white powder coat finish has been used to maintain the light bright design inside the apartments.

To the north-facing elevation, standard Low-E toughened glass was specified with the rest glazed using solar control glass.
“Coastal developments always require a diligent approach to glazing specification”, explains Dave Sutcliffe from installer Style Windows who coordinated the glazing installation.
He said: “The architect had a clear vision for the building and the facade required a precision specification to achieve the right balance between aesthetic and performance in relation to the building’s exposed location. Whilst installing beach-side was challenging, the finished facade looks impressive.”
Commercial director Andrew Spencer from fabricator Bonam and Berry Ltd reinforces the commitment to the versatile TECHNAL range commenting:
“Bonam and Berry have supplied TECHNAL architectural aluminium products continuously for over 40 years, and uses the complete range of systems for residential, commercial, education and all public and private sector applications.”
