An Amazonian incentive to sign up to the FDIS Diploma in Fire Doors

A lucrative windfall awaits one lucky person this month who decides to register for the UK’s newest qualification for door industry professionals.
All new registrants on the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) diploma in fire doors will enter a monthly prize draw to win a £100 Amazon voucher.
The FDIS diploma is a user-friendly online education programme which can be undertaken anywhere and at any time. It is attracting very positive reviews for the high quality of information and learning it provides about fire doors and doorsets, their components, specification, installation and maintenance.

Neil Ashdown, FDIS general manager comments:

“The number of professionals registering for the FDIS diploma is steadily growing as word gets out about how good it is. They are coming not only from the fire safety and door industries, but from a whole range of sectors including facilities management, education and the public sector. What they all have in common is a desire to have a greater knowledge of fire doors and a qualification to prove it.

“The prize draw is there to encourage anyone who might yet be wavering about starting the diploma. It is open to anyone who signs up to study the diploma and a single winner will receive a £100 Amazon voucher each month.”

Further details and the terms of the prize draw are available at:

www.fdis.co.uk/prize-draw.

The UK’s Fire Door Inspection Scheme is the first such scheme in Europe, providing professionals with online learning and diploma, and a route to becoming a certificated fire door inspector. The scheme is designed to help improve safety and save lives through creating a new pool of expertise and competence to help those with legal responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. It provides a vital new resource to help the ‘Responsible Person’ complete fire risk assessments for the premises they manage. It also raises awareness of defective fire doors and the potentially tragic consequences of leaving these unchecked.

FDIS is a joint initiative developed by the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers.

Yale has expanded its range of replacement handles, which when sold alongside the new Doormaster™ replacement multipoint lock range, enables locksmiths to improve the appearance and function of the whole door.

The concept of “saving a door” with replacement locks and furniture has mass market appeal, offering the opportunity to affordably replace or upgrade worn or broken door furniture and lock sets.

The stylish replacement handles are simple to fit and are suitable for PVCu, composite and wooden doors, with a complete range including Standard Security long and short backplate handles, Universal adjustable handles and Maximum Security handles.

All handles are designed for use with 92mm lock centres, and cover the most popular fixing points making this ideal for retrofitting.

Standard
Standard Security handles are available in short backplate (122mm fixing lug centres) and long backplate (215mm fixing lug centres), and have been tested in accordance with BS EN 1906:2002 and BS EN 1670:2007 for performance and durability.

Universal
The Universal handle features adjustable fixing points, covering 95% of the doorsets with 92mm lock centres on the market, radically reducing the need for time-consuming door preparation on site.

Maximum Security
Finally, the Maximum Security handle has been developed for use in conjunction with Yale British Standard euro cylinders to meet PAS 24 requirements.

The Maximum Security handle offers a built in cylinder guard and solid machined backplate to provide extra protection against handle and cylinder manipulation or attack. At the same time, strong steel lugs and stainless steel M6 screws ensure the handle resists attack for longer.

“The Security Handle offers protection for homeowners against handle and cylinder attack, and together with the Standard and Universal replacement handles are durable and quick and easy to install. Plus, locksmiths can benefit from offering these products from a brand that homeowners will both recognise and trust.”

E-TYPE AND F-TYPE GET TOGETHER FOR THE LORD MAYOR'S SHOW

Olympian Jessica Ennis with CMC's E-Type 1600 RW
Photo: Alister Thorpe
One of the most famous E-Types ever built is to accompany Olympian Jessica Ennis when she drives the all-new F-TYPE in this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show.

1600 RW, which is owned by Classic Motor Cars of Bridgnorth, joined the all-new F-TYPE in London on Thursday 1st November when Olympian and Jaguar Academy of Sport Ambassador Jessica Ennis announced she is to drive the new Jaguar car in the Lord Mayor’s Show on November 10th.

Jessica commented: “I’m so excited to be driving the Jaguar F-TYPE at the Lord Mayor’s Show next week. I had a go in the V6 S at the Gaydon proving ground on Monday and was amazed how well it sticks to the ground. It was fun but fast and very different to my XKR.”

The famous car will make its appearance alongside another celebre E-Type, Chassis No. 24, at the Lord Mayor’s Show.

1600 RW or Chassis No. 4 was the fourth E-Type to leave the production line and the first one to be sold. It was completed and despatched in April 1961 to its new owner who was none other than Jaguar’s own Racing Team Manager, Frank ‘Lofty’ England. After sitting in a garage for 25 years, the car was bought and restored by CMC.

Nick Goldthorp, CMC’s Managing Director who will be driving 1600 RW at the Lord Mayor’s Show, said:

“We are excited about this year as we will be accompanying the all-new F-TYPE with two iconic E-Types, which will show the strong historic links that exist between the two cars.”

The second E-Type will be Chassis No. 24 or the “Daily Mail” E-Type, which was one of the two examples that the newspaper gave away in a competition it ran in 1961 to win "the most wanted car in the world". The car also underwent a full restoration carried out by CMC and is now in excellent condition.

More than 500.000 people will see Jessica Ennis drive the all-new F-TYPE in its UK debut after it was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show.

CMC took part in last year’s Lord Mayor’s Show when it celebrated with Jaguar Cars the 50th Anniversary of the E-Type. It is delighted to be supporting them again with two of the most famous E-Types ever.

If you are unable to make the Lord Mayor's Show on the 10th November and you happen to be in London, you can view E-Type 1600 RW as it is being displayed from 1st to 9th November at the Grange St. Paul’s Hotel, 10 Godliman Street, London EC4V 5AJ.

What can we do to help you? - Master Locksmiths Association launch new user-friendly website

Dr Steffan George, development director of the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) comments on the launch of a new user-friendly website:

“Burglary rates are falling, with 677,000 burglaries reported in 2011/12 compared to 743,000 in 2010/11. However, the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) emphasises that this is no cause for complacency. 677,000 burglaries is 677,000 too many. It’s vital that as an industry we continue to promote the importance of security.

“To promote public security and make it easier than ever to contact an MLA licensed, vetted and inspected locksmith, we have launched a newly redesigned and upgraded website.

“The lack of a Government-backed licensing process for locksmiths has been an increasing concern within the industry. Unscrupulous traders and scam operators can charge high prices for substandard work and leave properties vulnerable.

“To counter this, the MLA has produced a user-friendly website where individuals and businesses can find a wealth of security advice and source MLA approved companies who can be relied upon to provide high quality services with skill and integrity.

“The website boasts an enhanced search function which allows users to search both geographically and by area of specialism for their local MLA locksmith. The facility to search by postcode gives an immediate indication of the MLA approved companies in the area and a ‘click on a region’ mapping device provides a visual tool. Lists of member locksmiths by region are also provided, ensuring that MLA member companies are given high visibility on the site as well as enhancing SEO.

“The upgraded website reflects our mission to promote MLA licensed companies to the public and make professional security advice accessible to all. MLA Member Locksmiths are already gaining a significant amount of enquiries through the new website and we expect this to grow into 2013.”

ARGE – THE EUROPEAN HARDWARE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION ARE PROUD TO LAUNCH THEIR NEW WEBSITE

The new ARGE website www.arge.org has just been launched

This year ARGE invested in a new website from the British Web design company, Hullabaloo.

ARGE and Hullabaloo worked together to provide users of the site with an informed and trustworthy point of reference.

The new site sets out to achieve the following:-

  • To become the recognised centre of expertise on hardware standards.
  • To act as a platform to drive ARGE’s sustainability agenda, and, support our lobbying campaign.
  • To attract and engage members and visitors.

The new ARGE site has been visually revolutionised. It uses strong photography, a bold logo and contemporary black header bars. ARGE’s Chairman, Jorma SirĂ©n, stated “This new Website looks like the Website of an important European Trade Association”.

The new site uses colour coded navigation and a clear user-friendly layout. Testimonials give voice to the members to express what ARGE means to them. The newly added Frequently Asked Question page will respond to visitor’s questions explaining about ARGE and answering important lock and hardware industry questions.

Fifteen European National Associations make up ARGE’s key members. The members section of the website allows visitors to access the contact details of these groups. These 15 members represent 252 Manufacturers of Locks and Hardware in total. A search facility in the website allows visitors to choose reputable manufacturers by product category or by country or by a combination of both.

A criticism of the previous site was that the content did not change regularly enough to keep users interested. With the new features, such as the Forum, this makes the new website more dynamic.

Take a look for yourself at www.arge.org and let us know what you think via the Forum http://arge.org/forum

PC HENDERSON COMMITTED TO ULTRA SECURITY WITH SECURED BY DESIGN

Left to Right:
Michael Brooke, Secured by Design Development Officer,
presenting Duncan Moncrieff, Managing Director PC Henderson
with Secured by Design accreditation.
Leading sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer PC Henderson is celebrating its double achievement of attaining PAS24 and Secured by Design accreditation for its innovative Securefold Ultra system, effectively complementing its existing European BS EN 1627 security status.

Securefold Ultra is a new security concept for residential and commercial exterior folding doors. With all the benefits of Henderson’s existing Securefold product the Ultra system features an additional layer of cleverly designed, enhanced security components making it one of the most secure systems on the market.

Securefold Ultra has three points of locking on every door seam; including an attack resistant hinge incorporating a security pin and unique central interlocking hinge leaf that prevents a burglar from tampering with or actually removing the hardware from the door.

There is also a flush bolt manufactured from extruded aluminium incorporating a 10mm diameter 316 stainless steel bolt which Henderson says is impervious to any attack or potential break-in, and, to make the Securefold Ultra even more burglar proof, all hardware incorporates security screws to prevent it from being disengaged from the hinge.

Door hardware such as Securefold Ultra also incorporates a rugged, weather resistant and corrosion-resistant system which is essential for long-term security. The extremes of the British weather have to be taken into account as this is a big factor in wear and tear on mechanisms, leaving them vulnerable.

Certification demands an attack resistant hinge incorporating security pins, a hinge bolt and central interlocking hinge leaf preventing a burglar from tampering or removing the hardware from the door ensuring three points of locking on every seam.

Duncan Moncrieff, Managing Director of PC Henderson says:

“We already knew we had a phenomenal product having been tested and achieved European BS EN1627 status for Securefold Ultra*, but we were committed to ensuring we achieved Secured by Design and PAS 24 too. It’s testament to the hard work of everybody at PC Henderson, from R&D to production and all support staff that we are at this point today.”

Michael Brooke, Secured by Design Development Officer says:

“Throughout the time we dealt with PC Henderson you could see their commitment in investing the time and effort to achieve Secured by Design. Securefold Ultra shows the standards that they adhere to for achieving the high level of security we require.”

Achieving both Secured by Design and BS accreditation could attract lower insurance premiums where Securefold Ultra is fitted, making it the must-have door and window hardware in both domestic and commercial settings.

* Securefold Ultra has been tested to the European security standard BS EN 1627:2011 to ensure that the enhanced Ultra system meets the requirements to be firmly classified burglar resistant.
