64% of People do not know the correct name for Bi-Fold Doors

Click or Tap to Enlarge

Almost two-thirds of people searching for what is known in the trade as a ‘bi-fold’ door are unaware of its true name, leading to over 34,000 fruitless searches for the product every month.

Research from Origin, the leading UK manufacturer of premium quality aluminium doors, windows and blinds, asked 500 members of the public to look at the attached infographic and name the doors illustrated within. The results showed that just 36% of people described the doors in question as bi-folds.

Other terms used by the public to describe the doors included: concertina, sliding, folding track, accordion and zig zag. There are over 34,000 monthly searches in Google for the other terms for bi-fold doors, meaning that companies may be failing to attract people to their site who are searching for this door but using different names to describe it.

Neil Ginger, CEO and founder of Origin, said:
“Looking at the amount of monthly Google searches for terms other than bi-fold and seeing that just 36% of the people surveyed refer to the doors by this term, it’s clear that there is a lot of scope for companies selling the doors direct to the public to include these other words in their online marketing collateral.”
Understanding that the general public may use different terms to describe the same product can mean that companies can attract more people to their website by using these terms on the site.

Jon Colegate, Director of Search at Ignition Search, an internet marketing company and Google Partner, said:
“This is really a matter of choosing the correct keywords to describe your product. The keywords and phrases that are present on your site allow people using a search engine like Google to find your company’s website and products.
Despite Google’s recent progress in ‘semantic’ searches — it is still crucial for companies to ‘speak the same language’ as those trawling the internet so potential customers can find you as quickly and easily as possible.”

Source: The research was conducted via Google Surveys on behalf of Origin surveying 500 UK adults.

A Lidl Success for Hörmann

The UK’s leading door manufacturer, Hörmann, has won a new contract with Lidl. The supermarket giant is creating a new regional distribution centre in Avonmouth and Hörmann has been chosen as the preferred door supplier for its 120 loading bays.

The new 600,000 square foot warehouse will be double the size of the existing warehouse in Weston-super-Mare and it is the fourth new Lidl warehouse to be announced in the last year. Hörmann will begin work at the site in August and the project is due to be completed in Spring 2018.

TSL Projects, the main contractor, awarded the loading bay contract to Hörmann following previous successful work together. A TSL spokesperson said:
“Hörmann did an amazing job at Lidl Wednesbury. They 100% backed up everything that was promised at the tender stage and were ranked in the top two sub-contractors on site. We truly consider them as a subcontract partner.”
Renowned for quality and innovation, Hörmann will provide the Avonmouth site with the very latest award-winning loading bay technology, including internal and external high speed doors, dock levellers, DSL & DSS Flap dock shelters, cushion dock seals, nylon dock bumpers and wheel guides. Speed and insulation have been key considerations throughout the project, so Hörmann’s  SPU F42 sectional doors are the ideal option.

The doors provide a good level of insulation and are fitted with a photocell safety guide as standard, which automatically stops the door from closing if an obstruction is sensed.  High speed doors, including the HS7030 PU 42, V5030 SEL & V6030 SEL, will also be fitted to optimise the flow of traffic, improve room conditions and save energy.

Ideal for large warehouses, the speed at which these doors operate minimises temperature fluctuations and maximises thermal efficiency. To ensure safety, Hörmann will also install dock levellers, DSL & DSS Flap dock shelters, cushion dock seals, nylon dock bumpers and wheel guides.

Commenting on the project, Hörmann’s UK projects director, Tom Langley, said:
“As loading bay specialists, we fully understand the requirements of large warehouses and distribution centres. Our products are ideal for this type of project because they’re not only renowned for their quality and reliability but they also provide unrivalled safety and efficiency.”
Hörmann’s presence in the industrial door market has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and the new Lidl contract follows a string of successful projects with some of the UK’s biggest businesses and distributors, including Asda, Amazon and DP World.

Its range of internal and external doors has been expanded to include a wider selection of designs, combining style with smart technology, such as new contactless control systems, to complement the 21st century workspace. Hörmann’s loading bay technology, in particular, has become more flexible to allow companies to adapt to changes brought about by e-commerce. The company has also received international recognition, including several ‘Design4Safety’ awards for the way in which its products have improved warehouse safety.

In addition to the Lidl Avonmouth project, Hörmann also has a number of other large-scale projects on the horizon including the Covent Garden Flower Market and BAE, Salmesbury Aerospace.

Spare a Thought for your Doors, they do much more than you’d think

Simon Osborne, commercial leader of Allegion UK, urges facilities and site managers of school estates to routinely check doors for compliance and maintenance.

Schools are never too far away from the headlines in the UK. Whether it is not having enough teachers for pupils, inner city school problems, a failing national system or otherwise, you can expect to see a headline almost every week in the papers regarding our education institutions.

When it comes to the facilities management side of education, there is often very little mention. Yet, it is one of the most important aspects, especially in a building filled with vulnerable children.

Fire safety is a particular area that needs addressed. According to the Great Britain Fire Statistics, from 2003/04 to 2013/14, there were more than 4,000 fires in schools, resulting in 129 casualties.

In 2016, a major incident included the Selsey Academy of West Sussex, which was almost completely destroyed; while Gower College of Swansea also suffered a blaze, but was eventually praised by the fire department for having working fire doors that stopped a classroom fire from spreading further.

It is inevitable that children will leave fire doors open or unlatched, so the best advice is to pre-empt this situation. Use latchbolt monitors or electromagnet door closers linked to the fire alarm systems and you give yourself greater control.

The former allows you to see any fire doors that have been left ajar, while the latter holds open heavy fire doors legally. Both are greatly beneficial for any high-traffic areas.

Never underestimate using a routine checklist, either. Advancing technology and hardware means more checks are required, while daily use will no doubt cause wear and tear.

Check for fluid viscosity, test air pressure scenarios, gaps and latching issues, and it can all be the difference between having a compliant fire door and one that is illegal and dangerous.

Access control should be given due consideration too. Recent high-profile cases highlight significant breaches, some of which have ended in tragedy.

This means it is more important than ever that facilities managers and site managers install door hardware that can control and monitor entrances for any irregular activity.

While we’re still far away from invoking the control that many U.S. schools have, we should follow their lead in pre-empting and avoiding situations as best as possible.

Be Part of a New Generation of Door Automation with No Complication!

In the ZAP of a button your mobile phone will now assist the installation of your X4 commercial operator for sectional doors.

The Wizards at Zap International Ltd have created a new and innovative product for the commercial market, known as the X4 operator, for sectional doors up to 25m².

It is unique in that its operating parameters can be programmed using a mobile phone or tablet, allowing for quick and easy installation as well as fast changes to settings such as the auto close time, obstruction sensitivity and obstruction reversing height, dependant on the size of the cable drums.

The X4 is compatible with all smart phones and mobile devices including IOS, Android and other operating systems.

The Zap Web Application displayed above

And that is not all, this superb operator is probably the safest of its type in the world as the X4 will not only detect obstructions on any part of the door in either direction, but will also detect unsafe operating conditions such as broken springs and cables, by incorporating Safety-Sense™ Technology- exclusive to ZAP.

This prevents fatal accidents and severe damage to the door. The X4 operates without a safety edge and meets UL 325. European: CE, NZ and AUS Safety Standards.

The X4 also incorporates programmable isolated relay contacts, which, for example, may be used to interlock a dock leveller until the door is open, perfect in a busy factory environment and most dependable.

The X4 is a one man installation saving cost, its ease of set up saves time and the universal installation positions: outboard or inboard of the cable drums, upside down or sideways works to your convenience. It really is the best commercial operator to have entered the market.

Bruce Gunton, Managing Director of Zap International, said:

‘Safety is at the forefront of our development. The new X4 not only adopts the safest operating technology in the world but allows for complete accuracy in your demand of its settings through the Zap Web App.
‘Zap International are proud to design, engineer and manufacture all their products in the UK ensuring quality, reliability, and outstanding performance. We offer a lifelong duty of care to all our customers and are confident our product will satisfy your sectional door needs’.

Hörmann staff put through their paces for Alzheimer’s Society UK

Leading door manufacturer, Hörmann UK, is delighted to announce that members of staff from its Leicestershire-based headquarters in Coalville successfully completed two gruelling challenges last month to raise money for its charity partner, Alzheimer’s Society UK.

The company, which has already raised an impressive £42k since it first partnered with the charity in 2015, saw over twenty-five members of staff take on the challenges to help bring it closer to its £45k target for 2017.

In May, fifteen members of staff teamed up to undertake the 5km and 10km Farmageddon obstacle course in Market Harborough. David O’Mara, marketing manager for Hörmann, was one of the fifteen who took part in the challenge

After the challenge, David O'Mara said:
“Although it was a lot more difficult than I thought it was going to be, it was a fantastic experience and one that I am so pleased to have been a part of. It was a great feeling to have so many of us running it and encouraging each other all the way to the finish line.”

Last weekend, managing director, David Newcombe, completed the 102-mile Leicestershire Round, visiting key areas of the county over four days. Ten members of staff joined David at several points along the route to make sure that, no matter how much his feet may have hurt, he was motivated along the way.

Commenting on this endeavour, David Newcombe said:
“The walk was an extremely rewarding, albeit challenging, experience and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. It was amazing to have a such a supportive team with me throughout the event, especially as some of them had also completed the Farmageddon obstacle course the week before. We are now just £3k away from our target of £45k and I could not be more delighted. Alzheimer’s Society UK is a very worthy cause that staff at Hörmann are proud to support.”

Farmageddon and the Leicestershire Round are the latest of several activities that Hörmann has organised in the last few years. To find out more information about Hörmann and its support for Alzheimer’s UK, or help it towards its target of £45k, visit www.justgiving.com

Metador Joins Secured by Design

Britannia Metador is pleased to announce that it has become members of Secured by Design, accrediting and recognising that its Defender Xtreme security door provides an effective measure in preventing and reducing crime.

The Middlesbrough based company is one of the UK’s leading steel security door manufacturers and a family run business with experience in the security industry spanning over 25 years.

The scheme is acknowledged by the UK Police, Home Office and a number of local authorities, and is part of a long established national project which focusses on the design and security of new and refurbished homes, commercial premises and car parks.

Its membership now allows police forces to recommend them and its Secured by Design product to home owners, commercial property owners, architects and housing associations who are looking to strengthen their premises’ security.

In order to become a Secured by Design member, companies must produce security products that pass certified standards and independent tests, as nominated by the police service. The standards and related tests must demonstrate product effectiveness in preventing or reducing crime, usually by resistance to physical attack and other common burglary methods.

This is not a simple process and is reserved only for products that provide the highest possible se-curity measures. Metador’s Defender Xtreme range is now Secured by Design, joining their other standards and accreditations such as CE Marking, ISO 9001 and BS 476 (fire doors), in ensuring that they deliver a first class security product that meets its customers’ requirements, on time, eve-ry time.

Britannia Metador Managing Director, Simon Evershed said:
“We are pleased to announce that we are now a member of Secured by Design, the flagship UK police initiative to help ‘design out’ crime through the use of high-quality, innovative products and processes.
“This is a great move forward for us in our company in the development of our Metador Defender Xtreme door set, which had to adhere to rigorous test standards required by the police to achieve the prestigious Secured by Design status.”

Secured by Design supports the principles of ‘designing out crime’ through physical security and processes, and aims to place as many security enhanced products into as many buildings as possible. The scheme works with the industry and tests properties to create high level security standards, responding to trends in crime and providing input on a number of key areas.

The majority of burglaries take place by breaking into the property through a door, either by forcing the lock or kicking it in, so making sure your doors are strong and secure is vital. For home owners, business owners and housing associations, ensuring your property is built with a Secured by Design product provides safety reassurance and security peace of mind.

To find out more about Britannia Metador’s Secured by Design accredited Defender Xtreme, and its other products, visit their website: www.britanniametador.com. They’re always happy to discuss time frames and advise on requirements and specifications.

Getting Wise to Potential of Smart Buildings

GEZE UK is encouraging architects and specifiers to ‘switch-on’ on to the benefits of developing smart buildings with the launch of a new brochure.

Smart Solutions highlights safety systems and drive technology which can be used to create innovative networked and modular solutions which allows GEZE windows and doors to be controlled from a single source.

Linked into GEZE’s new interface modules – the IO 420 and the IQ box KNX - products can be integrated via widely used communication standards for homes and commercial buildings.

Multifunctional GEZE products for doors and windows, combined with networked system solutions, guarantee effective smoke and heat extraction, fire compartmentation and clear escape routes. And for buildings which have restricted areas, GEZE access control systems enable clear routes of escape – initiated when the system is triggered.

The 16-page brochure also showcases which products can best be integrated with BACnet and KNX interfaces, not only for automated escape route doors and emergency exits, but for smoke and heat extraction systems, automatic sliding doors and automated ventilation.

The Smart Solutions brochure is now available for download from: www.geze.co.uk or to request a print copy email: info.uk@geze.com
