Recommissioned 1979 Ford Escort RS2000 Mk2 from Richard Hammond up for Auction

There is now just under a week to go until The Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show Sale on Saturday 25th September at Stoneleigh Park, Hall 1.

Classic Car Auctions are delighted to be offering this 1979 Ford Escort RS2000 Mk2 after the success Richard had at their sister company’s most recent sale, The Classic at Silverstone.

The exceptional example is prepared and supplied directly from Richard Hammond and his partners at ‘The Smallest Cog’. The car was originally supplied to the UK, but then spent some time in the Isle of Man before forming part of a collection in the Republic of Ireland.

Earlier this year, Richard and his team took the car to The London Classic Car Show before recommissioning.

Since, the example has been recommissioned and prepared for this sale and recently appeared at Hampton Court Concours D’Elegance where it received many positive comments. The Ford Escort has been recommissioned to a remarkable standard and is superbly presented in gleaming Midnight Blue – what a serious opportunity for any Rallye Sport collector.

Gary Dunne, CCA’s Sales Manager commented:
“We are absolutely delighted to once again be offering a spectacular car from Richard Hammond. Not only have The Smallest Cog team transformed the car but it will feature as part of the all-important original docuseries airing on discovery+ UK later this year.”

The recommissioning work includes a new interior fitted by the renowned Aldridge Trimmers as well as new front suspension and front/rear brakes – further details can be found on CCA’s condition report. The car is sensibly guided at £35,000 – 40,000.

Classic Car Auctions will start their sale at 11am with viewing days available on Wednesday 22nd – Friday 24th September as well as on the morning of the sale.

Bidding for the sale can be done in person, online, by phone or via commission (pre-bid). For absentee bidding, please complete the registration process at least 48 hours before the auction day to ensure your registration is processed. Alternatively, if you have any questions, please email the UK Auction House Market Leaders on enquiries@classiccarauctions.co.uk or call 01926 640888.

Yale supports Fire Door Safety Week 2021

Yale has pledged its support to Fire Door Safety Week for the fifth year running, underlining the company’s commitment to fire door safety and security.

The annual campaign, which will run from 20-26 September, raises awareness of the critical role that fire doors play in saving lives and protecting property. It draws attention to specific issues such as poor installation and maintenance, aiming to engage and educate specifiers, building owners and the public on fire door safety.

Fire doors are one of the most fundamental elements of a building’s passive fire protection. They act as the first line of defence in a fire and provide those vital minutes for occupants to evacuate the building safely. In addition, they must provide the required level of security for the building in which they are installed.

Yale has long been committed to working with fire door accredited companies and investing in testing to ensure the fire door meets test requirements. An example of this is the company’s new partnership with Falcon Panel Products Ltd, the UK market leader for certified timber doorset components and timber panels, which has opted to take the full range of Yale hardware on its new Stredor external doorset system.

Ideal for housing providers, the Stredor doorset range features the Yale Lockmaster AutoEngage multi-point lock, designed to achieve PAS 24:2016, FD30 and FD60 when tested as part of a door assembly and tested to exceed 100,000 cycles – the equivalent of 34 years’ operation.

Adding security to fire safety, the range also includes the Yale Platinum 3 Star Euro cylinder, which has been approved to TS007:2014 and SS312 Diamond Standard and is endorsed by the Police preferred Secured by Design scheme, and the Yale Postmaster Professional FD letterplate, which features an inner flap with a positive stop feature to guard against common attack methods and ‘fishing’.

Brett Evans, Technical Director for Door Hardware at Yale DWS, comments:
“We are extremely proud of our suite of hardware for fire doors. Each product in the range can make a huge difference to the effectiveness of a fire doorset, and provides the outstanding security features you would expect from Yale.

“Fire door safety is a huge priority for us. We are constantly investing in our team to ensure that we can offer the correct guidance on fire safety – for example, by arranging for our employees to complete fire door diploma courses. That’s why we support Fire Door Safety Week every year, as highlighting the issues surrounding fire door safety is so important for our industry and society.”

Case Study: Summer House is Secured with SeceuroShield 38

Glasgow based distributor Aardee completed this attractive summer house with the installation of two of SWS UKs SeceuroShield 38 roller shutters.

Designed to look like wood panels, the summer house is in fact constructed using strong steel, resulting in a robust construction ideal for the Scottish climate. Despite being triple glazed, the owner wanted to ensure the glass windows had added security during times of high wind and rain and contacted SWS UK distributor Aardee to offer a solution.

After inspecting both the site and the position of the summer house, Aardee advised their customer that aluminium roller shutters, SeceuroShield 38 would provide durable protection from the weather and enhanced security during the winter months.

Aardee also recommended the addition of windlocks which have been designed for use on roller shutters subjected to high winds. Opting for convenient electric operation, the customer chose the Golden Oak finish which was a near-perfect match to the grain used on the steel panels.

Upon completion, Aardee's customer expressed his delight with his newly installed shutters, stating that the discreet, yet robust design was exactly what he was looking for.
SeceuroShield 38

SeceuroShield 38 is SWS UK’s best-selling roller shutter and is popular across both domestic and commercial applications. The extruded aluminium profile allows for a strong roller shutter that can span widths of up to 4000mm.

Available in a large choice of powder-coated finishes, the versatile SeceuroShield 38 can also be mixed with SeceuroVision where partial see-through slats are required.

Find out more about SeceuroShield 38 roller shutters here.

Videx strengthens IPURE IP range with array of new features

Videx has added a series of new features to its IPure IP range, expanding the versatility of the system in providing a high-quality entry solution for a wide range of buildings.

The Videx IP system is an expandable system which can be customised to suit a range of entry needs, accommodating up to 42 apartments using conventional call button modules and vandal resistant panels or a digital call panel option able to call up to 10,000 apartments. All entrance panels are available with voice annunciation to aid visitors during the call progress and proximity access control.

The new features include a 7” touch screen handsfree video monitor, a 3.5” touch screen handsfree video monitor, an audio IP telephone and the Cloudbox which allows additional programmable input/output to be added to the system as well as being a gateway to using the app in apartments which don’t have a video monitor.

The new hands free video monitors complement the existing 3.5” touch screen videophone with handset. Up to 16 devices can be included in each apartment with advanced cascading flexibility if required.

James Gray, National Sales Manager at Videx, said:
“IP controlled entry is one of the most convenient and flexible solutions available. The huge benefit of IP technology is that it doesn’t require dedicated wiring infrastructure and can be used on existing networks. These networks can be shared with other technologies such as CCTV, building management and many others including FTTH/PON infrastructures.

“By adding even more features to our IP offering, we’re offering great flexibility and greater convenience. A new user interface has been introduced which complements the look and feel of the system across all platforms and can also be rolled out to existing systems through a firmware upgrade.

“What’s more, our IP system is managed through a simple PC wizard programme which allows the installer or engineer to completely customise the system to the building’s requirements.

“The wizard will detect all the devices on the system allowing each to be setup as required and will also advise of any new firmware available. Using the wizard, the system can be connected to the cloud allowing users of the iOS and Android apps to receive calls, recall entrance panels with video and activate any of the outputs.”

SIP is now supported across the range allowing it to be integrated into third party SIP telephone systems. For further integration, the door panels now include an RTSP server allowing video to be streamed to third party systems and http api to be used by third party systems.

The 7” monitor with full touch screen also has a number of added features which builds on the vast range of features already offered on other video monitors in the range.

These include third party camera integration using RTSP with support for H264 & H265, home automation integration, picture in picture viewing, a built-in web server to access event logs, captured images and videos to play back and an optional Wifi connection. Further features can be added with a simple firmware upgrade.

On Your Bike Garador

After last year’s event was cancelled because of the pandemic, once again Garador has helped ensure a major fund-raising cycle challenge ran without a hitch.

The south west’s Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge raises funds for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, and this year’s event involved hundreds of cyclists riding across both counties raising money for the charity.

There were two cycle routes to choose from, a 55 mile stretch which began in Watchet and finished in West Bay, and an 11 mile stretch which started out in Drimpton but also finished up in West Bay.

Garador played a vital role in providing transport to ensure all the bikes could be taken back to the start point after the event. Using the latest lorries from its modern fleet of delivery vehicles, Garador added special modifications to ensure all the bikes could be secured quickly and easily with no risk of damage during the journeys.

Everything went to plan, and around 600 bikes were successfully delivered to the right places at the right time.

Garador’s Managing Director Neil Discombe said:
“We have been supporting the local Air Ambulance service for many years,”

“We were delighted that we could help out again this year.”

“Our vehicles are fitted with automatic lifting facilities and internal secured sections,”
he added:
“Adapting them to carry hundreds of modern bikes was fairly straightforward and we were more than happy to offer our assistance for this important local charity.”
To find out more about Garador and its range of garage doors, please visit www.garador.co.uk or call 01935 443722.

Norseal’s Get Out of Jail Card

An amazing refurbishment project, turning a neglected and ruined Napoleonic jail into a luxury hotel and tourist attraction in Cornwall features Norseal NOR820 acoustic drop seals.

The drop seals which are fitted to the hotel doors, improve the hotel’s acoustics providing a peaceful night’s sleep for guests, with acoustic sealing efficiency of up to 92 per cent without compromising the historic aesthetics.

Bodmin Jail, built by prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars in 1778, was in operation until 1929 when it was due to be demolished. But because the dynamite used in the demolition failed to destroy the thick stone walls, the building fell into ruin for 70 years until it was bought by a businessman who fell in love with the building and its history.

As befits a former jail, the doors play a central role in a refurbishment’s design scheme as well the building’s modern fire safety requirements. Working with door manufacturer Dorplan, Architect Twelve Architects recreated the original look of the original eighteenth century cell doors while still complying with fire regulations and the acoustic standards required in a modern luxury hotel.

The result is the transformation of the Grade II-listed ruins to create a modern, 70- bed hotel and visitor attraction that also pays homage to its history.

Dorplan designed and produced around 400 doorsets for Bodmin Jail Hotel in dusty grey or an arresting lemon yellow with inlaid beading and grooving to create a panelled effect, and matt black ironmongery to recreate the look and feel of the original door furniture. In some cases, original doors were used.

No matter how authentic or historic the design, acoustic properties of modern hotel doors are a vital part of a successful and peaceful customer experience. At Bodmin Jail Dorplan used NOR820 drop seals from Norseal to ensure that the hotel rooms achieved exceptionally high acoustic performance.

Additionally, the seals specified at the Bodmin Jail Hotel keep heat in, whilst reducing the transfer of smoke, draughts and light coming through door bottom gaps, further enhancing the comfort and safety of hotel guests.

Norseal NOR820 helps doors meet the requirements of BS9999, the standard which details the performance criteria for smoke sealed doorsets in the UK and can be added to fire doors without any detriment to the door’s fire performance. NOR820 acoustic door seals have been successfully passed the Certifire TS21 smoke test.

Part of the European Athmer Group, Norseal is the leading provider of specialist door seal solutions, plus a wide range of ancillary door products. The company has a long track record of innovation, developing products which meet and exceed the latest industry standards for fire and smoke protection, acoustic properties, accessibility, and thermal insulation.

Products are backed by a qualified and experienced technical team offering advice and guidance on all aspects of intumescent and acoustic seals.

As well as its core range of seals, Norseal supplies a wide range of supplementary door products including fire-rated glazing, electrical and plumbing solutions, fire rated ventilation, letter plates, door viewers, threshold plates, weather seals, and finger protection products.

For more information, please visit www.norseal.co.uk or contact Norseal on 01661 830088.

Mighty Minis: Goodwood Revival to host epic Mini Cooper race

With one of the most illustrious grids ever assembled, Olympic Champion Sir Chris Hoy and Rock Legend Brian Johnson will go head-to-head with Le Mans, World Endurance, British GT and World Touring Car Champions in the John Whitmore Trophy presented by Sure

With less than a week to go until the Goodwood Revival returns (Friday 17 - Sunday 19 September), the organisers are excited to announce that they have assembled one of the most illustrious ever grids for the John Whitmore Trophy presented by Sure, due to take place on the Saturday morning of the event.

Six-time Olympic and 11-time World Champion Sir Chris Hoy and rock legend Brian Johnson of AC/DC fame will line up alongside the likes of Le Mans 24hr winners Emanuele Pirro and André Lotterer; former Formula 1 drivers Jochen Mass and Brendon Hartley; the only multiple Formula E Champion in the series’ history, Jean-Eric Vergne; as well as F1 drivers-turned-broadcasters Martin Brundle, Karun Chandhok and Tiff Needell, with the former going head to head with his son Alex, himself a European Le Mans Series Champion.

Indeed, between them the starting grid for the John Whitmore Trophy presented by Sure can boast:
  • 9 Le Mans 24hr winners with a total of 21 titles
  • 3 Le Mans 24hr class winners with a total of 7 wins
  • 6 World Endurance Champions with a total of 7 titles
  • 2 British GT Champions with a total of 5 titles
  • 2 World Touring Car Champions with a total of 4 titles
  • Formula E, W Series, BTCC drivers and 4 former F1 drivers

Named after Sir John Whitmore, who won the British Saloon Car Championship in a Mini in 1961, his first year in competition, the one-off race will celebrate 60 years of the Mini Cooper, pitting 30 of the iconic saloons against each other in a two-driver, 45-minute race.

Following the success of the all-Mini St Mary’s Trophy in 2009 and the Betty Richmond Trophy at the 77th Members’ Meeting in 2019, this is without a doubt set to be one of most closely contested and exciting races of the Revival weekend.

Sir Chris Hoy will take to the track again on the Sunday of Revival, leading hundreds of cyclists in a special inaugural ride to celebrate Eroica Britannia’s new home at Goodwood, ahead of the iconic vintage cycling festival’s return to the Goodwood Motor Circuit next year.

Tickets
Tickets for the Revival are still available and can be purchased via goodwood.com or by calling the Ticket Office on 01243 755055.

For an extra special day out, hospitality is also available across the event and can be organised by emailing hospitality@goodwood.com or calling 01243 755054.

Does Your Door Hold a Dirty Secret?

The need for deep cleaning to combat disease has never been more pertinent, especially within health and care sectors where efforts to limit contagion have been stepped up to minimise contamination through contact.

This includes doors – entrances to wards, operating theatres, laboratories, emergency rooms and other public areas.

Naturally, there will be a focus on minimising contact transmission by cleaning handles, fingerplates and other door architecture that has frequent use, but what about those all-important fingerguards and drop seals? All door parts have a propensity to trap dirt or germs but can they take the impact of rigorous cleaning and remain effective?

Strand Hardware is the exclusive UK distributor for Athmer finger protection which has undertaken rigorous testing of its products using a range of cleaning agents.

The products were extensively tested using the most common cleaning agents and disinfectants from the RKI/VAH list. They were examined for possible reactions and resistance to:
  • Bacillol AF
  • Incidin +
  • Trichlorol
  • Optisept
  • Milk of lime
  • Terralin
  • Helipur
The tests found little or no reaction to the 100% pure solutions, with only slight discolouration of fabric due to deposits caused by evaporation of the cleaning products. No negative impact was caused to the durability or function of the components.
Finger protection is a vital safety measure in public buildings, particularly those where children or vulnerable people are present. A closing door will exert a massive amount of pressure on fingers or hands trapped in the hinge gap and can cause injury.

Catherine Franks, Managing Director of Strand Hardware, was keen to point out that not all fingerguards are made equal.
“There are a great deal of cheap plastic finger protectors coming into the UK which may not have durability or resistance to cleaning products. As with heat, cold or aging, detergents can cause plastics to become brittle,”
She said
“Athmer finger guards offer a quality product range which is durable and reliable, preventing injuries by eliminating the danger of accidental finger entrapment between the closing edges of the door leaf and the door frame. Specifiers should choose products that have been tested to BS8613 as well as being tested with cleaning products.”
