Everest fit Yale 3-star Platinum cylinder as standard

Yale has announced that its long-standing partner, Everest, is now fitting the Platinum 3-star cylinder on all its doors as standard.

When it comes to home security, doors continue to be the leading target for potential break-ins. Statistics from ONS revealed that 76% of household burglaries in England and Wales occurred when the culprit accessed the home through a door.1

With cylinder attacks continuing to be a popular tactic used by criminals, Everest recognises the need for high-performance profile cylinders that protect UK homeowners by meeting the TS007 3-star standard.

Anthony Threlfall, Head of Marketing at Everest comments:
“Homeowners are more security conscious than ever before. They expect high security as standard and that’s why we’ve chosen to fit Yale’s TS007 accredited 3-star kitemarked anti-snap cylinder across all of our doors.

“Before deciding on Yale’s Platinum 3-star cylinder we benchmarked the market in an evaluation and independent test program and Yale came out on top.”

The Yale Platinum 3 Star has been designed, developed, and tested to Yale’s exacting standards to deliver high-performance security. Available in chrome or brass and dual colour finishes, it has been approved to TS007:2014 and SS312 Diamond Standard and is endorsed by the Police preferred Secured by Design scheme.

Paul Atkinson, Managing Director at Yale, comments:
“Everest is a longstanding and valued Yale customer. We are thrilled that they’ve chosen to fit the Platinum 3 Star Cylinder as standard, recognising the protection it offers against even the most determined intruders.”

Protect Your Business Vehicle: Five Basic Steps to Help Prevent Van Theft

Whether you’re self-employed or work for a company, a van may be the lifeblood of your business. In fact, there are 4.1 million licensed vans on Britain’s roads today with 42% of those owned by individuals.

Often vans will be stacked with valuables like tools or raw materials so a break-in can have serious consequences for your operations – not to mention your insurance premiums.

Nobody wants disruption to their business, so taking steps to safety-proof your van is paramount.

With some insights from the van leasing company, Van Ninja we’ll run through a handy list of security tips in this guide – from deterring potential thieves to making your van impregnable.

1. Park Responsibly

Before we get on to enhanced van security measures, the simple idea of parking your van in a carefully chosen area can deter opportunistic thieves. Always choose a well-lit area and ideally one in close proximity to other cars and pedestrians.

A CCTV secure car park is best, while, when at home, parking in front of home security devices can be a sound choice. These devices include alarms linked between houses and vehicles and security cameras.

How you park your car can also decrease your van’s vulnerability. Reversing onto your driveway can protect your van’s rear doors while parking closer to walls or other obstructions can decrease the likelihood of thieves gaining unwarranted access.

When leaving your vehicle, double-check your van is locked by pulling the handle instead of absent-mindedly listening for beeps or clicks.

2. Consider Your Van’s Design

Whilst your company branding can be an effective marketing tool, over-explicit van designs can reveal the contents of your vehicle and make it more of a target for thieves.

This can even leave your van the subject of ‘casing’ – where thieves pre-meditatively scout out your van – as opposed to a spontaneous crime. Eschew detailed designs in favour of more discreet or blank branding to keep your content safe.

3. Improve Your Van Lock

Van owners should look to empty their vans of expensive materials wherever possible to decrease the chance of theft. However, whilst keeping supplies or tools in your van for lengthy durations is ill-advised, this is not always practical.

When you are forced into leaving your van contents unattended for long periods of time, an upgraded lock is a must, especially with easily available lock-picking tools able to break into most manufactured-fitted locks.

Installing a slam lock is a helpful tool as it lends an extra layer of security, while also providing a visible, physical deterrent. Slam locks are a sage choice for delivery drivers or users with frequent drops or stop-offs as the lock is engaged as soon as the door is closed.

Deadlocks are another option and are considerably stronger than standard fitted locks as they don’t pose any spring mechanism weaknesses.

This makes them a reliable choice for users leaving their vans parked overnight or in potentially insecure areas. Steel-clad or heavy-duty options work best here.

4. Physical Theft Prevention

While protecting your van’s contents is a top priority, it is also wise to secure the whole van. Old-school physical deterrents such as steering wheel, pedal and gear-lever locks are good choices here and can really discourage criminals from breaking in.

Getting into the habit of putting these in place at the end of a day’s work, or when leaving your van unattended, can be a worthwhile routine while wheel clamps can also be used in extreme circumstances. After all, you don’t want your shiny new van being stolen when van leasing.

5. Sound The Alarm

Another line of defence is to fit your van with an alarm which triggers upon possible break-in. It is commonly thought that all vans come factory-fitted with such devices, but this may not be true of older or cheaper models.

A high-quality aftermarket alarm solution is a good buy and more hi-tech models can even be linked up to your home or mobile device. While alarms only alert you to break-in, immobilisers can shut down the van and prevent it from starting completely.

So, there we have it, ensure peace of mind with our comprehensive safety guide and stay at the vanguard of your business with your van in top condition.

Door manufacturer invests in new connectivity to support growth

Start-up door manufacturer Portico Doors has invested in a package of new digital connectivity and technology services to support growth.

The North East firm, which produces and supplies a range of composite doors for residential housing across the UK from its new Washington facility, has completed the installation of a turnkey IT solutions from Advantex.

Part of an undisclosed five-figure contract, the work saw Advantex resolve several business-critical connectivity issues from the outset to enable onsite production to begin as planned earlier this autumn.

The project provided server hardware, wireless local area network, switching infrastructure, firewall and cybersecurity, network infrastructure and Backup subscriptions with a package of on-going IT support.

Investment sees Portico Doors, which was opened for business in October by brother and sister Tony and Charlotte Craggs, benefit from superfast production connectivity as well as cybersecure IT services as it ramps-up door production at its 40,000 sq. ft. factory on the Pattinson Industrial Estate.

Portico Doors is already seeing robust demand since opening for business and is investing in the latest technology and services as part of ambitious plans to develop and grow the business.

Services director Charlotte Craggs said:

“Advantex pulled out all stops to overcome some complex business critical connectivity issues, with its engineers working quickly to help us get started.
We were impressed by their service and rapid grasp of our requirements, delivering effective solutions that will meet our current requirements and future needs as we continue to establish the business.”

This is the latest contract success for Advantex, which currently employs over 50 people and is targeting a £6 million turnover this year as it continues to see a strong performance on the back of investment in a skilled workforce, new products and services, and a pipeline of forward orders.

Scott Duncan, business development manager, said:

“We are delighted to support new start-ups in the region, leveraging our expertise in the manufacturing sector to deliver advanced and high-performance services as part of integrated turnkey solutions.
Advantex are seeing a growing number of Northeast and national manufacturing clients switching to our managed service solutions  to drive their business performance.”

Distinction Doors Launches New Website

Distinction Doors is pleased to introduce its new website at distinctiondoors.co.uk. One of the final building blocks in establishing Distinction Doors as a premium brand, the new site responds to customer feedback and changes in consumer online habits, post-pandemic.

distinctiondoors.co.uk has a streamlined and simplified message, with a consistent tone of voice. The homepage is dynamic and communicates key attributes. The door journey has also been outlined in three easy steps – find your door style, choose your door colour, and pick your glass design.

Product Pages

Each door range – nxt-gen, Signature, Contemporary and Fire Doors has its own page section with a brief introduction, a product and a lifestyle image, and a View Range button. Once the visitor hits the button, a new page opens revealing the features and benefits associated with the range.

Below this is a gallery of the door styles, each one is named and numbered with the Distinction Doors reference code, for ease. Within the product pages there is also a filter option.

Linked to door-designer

Each door style is then linked to the company’s door-designer tool. With the click of a button, consumers can ‘design this door’ and be directed to the online configurator which opens in a new tab. This will prove useful for Distinction customers and their customers too. The door-designer is also accessed via the header.

Inspired Content

Distinction has boosted the volume and quality of its web content, most notably with an inspiration landing page. Including hints and tips from the Distinction Doors design experts, this page encourages consumers to explore the offering. Website visitors can click between ‘Ask the Experts’, ‘Door Styles’, ‘Colour Range’, ‘Glass Styles’ and ‘Tips & Tricks’. These sections include long-form content which provides valuable information to the reader. The home page also includes a gallery feed to social media.

Showroom Locator

Always one of its highest-ranking web pages, the showroom locator has been upgraded. Signposted in the header, the showroom page enables consumers to find a showroom local to them using an address search bar. Contact details and website link are available for each specialist Distinction Doors retailer. Plus, each one has a view on map function with access to directions, all without leaving the site.

The printed brochure also remains a vital sales and decision-making tool and so, web visitors can ‘Request our brochure’ in the footer of any web page by simply submitting their email address.

Trade Customers

While the new site is designed for and targets the consumer, Distinction Doors is still actively connecting with its trade customers. Accessed through the header bar and menu, the Trade page provides important information for new and potential trade customers. Existing customers can also click for the online ordering platform.

Speaking of the new website, Bethaney Larkman, marketing and communications manager for Distinction Doors said:
“As the UK’s largest supplier of composite doors, it is important that we respond to changes in consumer habits so we can best support our customers and our customer’s customers.
“This is one of the reasons why we have chosen to invest in a new website. It has been designed and developed to appeal to consumers and will therefore create consumer pull for our customers. We are excited to see the opportunities it will bring in 2023 and beyond.”

Door Hardware: Protecting Commercial Property Over Winter

Between crime and cold weather, many commercial facilities develop vulnerabilities over the winter period, but door hardware can play a vital role in protecting property says Daniel May of Consort.

The temperature has dropped. The nights have drawn in. And many commercial properties now face a tough period of additional challenges. From drastically increased footfall and extended periods of closure to extreme weather conditions, the winter months invite a host of differentials that are seldom considered during the other three seasons of the year.

Daniel May
Throughout the holiday period, buildings and businesses are at a heightened security risk especially, and facility managers must look to prepare their property and its people. Theft is the most common type of misconduct experienced by commercial properties and according to a previous study from The National Office of Statistics, seasonal crime is an area of concern for many, where businesses have been found 22% more likely to encounter robberies between November and January.

Before facility managers can officially wind down for festive celebrations, it’s essential to address the key areas of vulnerability in a commercial property. And so, where accessibility, security and fire safety are core themes to consider, decision makers must use this time to review the multiple points of entry located around their premises while recognising the true impact of fully functional door hardware.

Assessing access points

At the heart of any building’s operation are its access points, or more specifically, its doors. Designed to facilitate access and egress, doors - alongside external windows - also play a crucial role in the security infrastructure of a facility and should be regularly reviewed as part of ongoing risk assessments.

Rather unsurprisingly, it’s documented that 67% of burglars choose to enter a premises through a door, whereas 29% break-in through the windows. With this in mind, facility managers have a duty to assess the key access points in and around their building to further nullify the risks associated with security breaches. Leaving these areas compromised can paint a larger target on commercial properties - especially while the building is vacant during Christmas and potentially more prone to other criminal activity such as vandalism and arson attacks.

Some commercial facilities may benefit from the adoption of modernised access control systems, designed to add a further layer of security while aiding ease of movement around the building. Modern access control systems integrate digital locks and access credentials into a building’s security infrastructure to facilitate higher levels of control. Commonly adopted in hospitality and commercial settings with high footfall, these centralised solutions provide individuals with key card or mobile access identification and grants them admission to areas only when necessary. At the same time, instant updates are delivered to facility managers via smartphone or digital device - allowing users to revoke access and keeping them informed of activity, even when they’re absent from the building.

Facility managers are also urged to conduct simple checks to their doors and windows ahead of business closure dates. Aside from confirming access points are closed and locked at the correct times by staff, there’s an onus on decision makers to review their hardware ahead of any temporary holiday shutdowns, ensuring its safe and fit for application. Consider a door’s locks and latches for example, where low quality, damaged and missing hardware will create vulnerable and easy to identify points of entry for opportunists as well as fire safety risks.

For access points, and for fire door’s specifically, British Standards recommend a building’s designated responsible person conducts regular visual checks of all locks, hinges, apertures, frames and leaves, alongside six-month periodic maintenance inspections. In some cases, insurance companies may insist on minimum security standards for locks, windows and the perimeter doors of a commercial building and so upon locating ineffective or inoperative hardware, reliable replacements - signified by third-party accreditations - should be identified and installed by a professional as soon as possible.

Cold weather maintenance

A drop in temperature can also have an adverse effect on the operation of a door and put stress on its ironmongery components. The wooden frames located around doors and windows for example, are especially susceptible to cold weather conditions and can occasionally expand and contract - leading to complications with insulation and more crucially, risking the integrity of access points.

Swelling and shrinking may alter door components and can leave gaps in mechanisms, generally disrupting its operation. When swollen, a door may damage its closing mechanism, leaving the latch to jam and making it more difficult to open and close - therefore presenting itself as a target for break-ins. Conversely, a shrunken door may leave unwanted gaps between itself and its hinges, potentially becoming a critical fire safety risk as a result of its inability to compartmentalise smoke and flames effectively. Generally, gaps around a door frame should read between 3 to 4mm, but should they show larger through winter, it’s important to seek advice from the manufacturer or a professional.

In more severe cases, door hardware can become frozen and may prompt users to force its operation. Over time, this type of damage can accumulate and leave ironmongery in a state of disrepair, disrupting business and leaving buildings susceptible to security breaches in the process. Loose screws located on locks or latches for example, can complicate the operation of doors and windows by causing them to rub or stick to the frame, and subsequently, should be tightened or replaced at first indication.

While it’s true that facility managers can’t control the external factors that arise with winter, it’s vital to act and undertake appropriate measures internally, and ahead of any closures. By conducting comprehensive risk assessments and mapping out maintenance periods for key access points, decision makers will form an adequate foundation of security for their building - all while gifting themselves peace of mind in the process.

Rhino scales up Manufacturing at its North West facility

One of the UK’s leading designers and manufacturers of high-performance engineered doors is scaling up the manufacturing work taking place at its North West facility to support the completion of a number of high-profile rail infrastructure projects.

Rhino Doors, whose main manufacturing facility is in Port Talbot, South Wales, has moved some of its current project work to its site in Bamber Bridge, Lancashire, to ensure it meets upcoming delivery and installation deadlines.

The firm is currently nearing the end of a £1 million-plus project to design and install 20 bespoke oversized 90-minute integrity stainless steel fire doors in London Underground’s Bank Station, with the final manufacturing work taking place at Port Talbot.

Meanwhile, manufacturing has picked up in Bamber Bridge to facilitate the completion of a contract to supply 19 bespoke sliding, single-leaf sliding cross passage fire doors for use within a major North American rail tunnel and rated at 90 minutes integrity.

With two significant projects ongoing at both UK sites, Rhino is continuing to strengthen its reputation as one of the most trusted manufacturers in the rail infrastructure sector.

Earlier this year, Rhino also completed work on a £600K project at London’s Moorgate Station, which required the firm to manufacture self-closing 2-hour integrity stainless steel fire doors, designed to provide refuge for passengers during potential emergencies.

Stuart Lawrence, Group Managing Director, said:
“It’s been a brilliant year for Rhino Doors and the wider group, with multiple high-profile rail infrastructure projects ongoing, as well as a steady flow of work in other major sectors.

Building Safety – Why should you care?

Highlighting the need to move from compliance to leadership in building safety, ASSA ABLOY’s latest white paper is designed to challenge the way the industry thinks about safety within the built environment – encouraging building owners, managers and developers to elevate safety from just being a ‘tick box’ exercise.

Download the latest white paper from here: www.assaabloy.com.

Following a series of reports on building safety from Dame Judith Hackitt and the Industry Safety Steering Group (ISSG), the white paper uses the same framework as the most recent ISSG report, and examines the roles of: Leadership and collaboration, Compliance and capacity building, and Responsibility and transparency when it comes to building safety.

Speaking on the launch of its latest paper, Eryl Jones, Managing Director of ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group, said:
“In essence, more needs to be done to accelerate culture change in the built environment industry, so we can move from a position of compliance to leadership in building safety. With an extensive supply chain involved in building projects and a wide-ranging number of groups, associations and authorities trying to tackle this issue, we felt it was our role to help provide advice and recommendations on what we believe are the best opportunities to help address this challenge, which is the reason for this white paper.”

With approval and endorsement from the GAI and DHF, the document highlights case studies where a lack of compliance and leadership led to tragic consequences and delves into how recommendations from the ISSG will help to avoid this in the future.

The paper which also sets out the benefits of regulatory and legislative changes, such as Whole Life Costings, Environmental Product Declarations and improved competency criteria, and argues strongly that in order for prescribed changes to have any impact, there must also be a change in mind set when it comes to building safety.

The whitepaper is a must read for anyone in the built environment, as well as those looking to improve the quality and maintenance of their security and access systems.
