Garador’s Tried and Tested Carlton Proves Popular

With a classic design that suits many different styles of property, Garador’s Carlton up-and-over garage door is one of the most popular garage doors on the market.

The Carlton offers exceptional value for money with its tried and tested design.

Constructed from high grade galvanised steel, it is both long-lasting and low maintenance, making it a cost-effective choice for homeowners.

The crisp vertical swage complements modern architecture, but also sits well on traditional builds or alongside other garage doors where there are blocks of garages in a row.

It has been engineered with exceptional attention to detail.

A rivet-free design means the surface of the door panel is smooth and a durable powder-coat paint finish protects the door from the elements.

Most garages take up a significant proportion of a property’s frontage, so choosing the right shade can add real value to a property.

Garador’s Carlton comes in a choice of 20 standard colours, including the ever-popular Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016), ensuring you can always find the perfect shade for the build.

The Carlton’s box section chassis results in a strong and stable door construction, while the solid euro cylinder locking rods offer excellent security.

Customers also have the option to upgrade to full Secured by Design status if required, providing additional peace of mind.

Today garages come in many different shapes and sizes.

Garador’s Carlton is available in the full range of sizes up to 5500mm wide, including standard, made-to-measure and double door sizes, enabling customers to specify an accurate door size to fit their garage.

In addition, it can be supplied with canopy or retractable lifting gear, the latter of which is ideally suited to electric automation with one of Garador’s GaraMatic operators.

The GaraMatic 10 and GaraMatic 20 include an integrated Bluetooth received, meaning the door is ready to be operated via Garador’s BlueSecur app for Android and iOS smartphones.

After many years, the Carlton hasn’t lost its appeal and continues to offer a tried and tested design for different types of homes across Britain.

To find out more about the Carlton or any of the Garador range, call 01935 443722 or visit www.garador.co.uk

Iconic electrified DeLorean DMC-12 to star at Salon Privé 2024

An electrified DeLorean DMC-12 is to be one of the star cars at Salon Privé 2024 after internationally renowned EV technology company Electrogenic confirmed its attendance at the world-famous Blenheim Palace summer season spectacular.

The iconic hero car of the Back to the Future films ‘now finally has the sporting performance its futuristic shape always deserved,’ with Electrogenic’s custom ‘plug and play’ EV conversion kit transforming the 1980s supercar.

It offers more than 150 miles of real-world electric motoring and can use the latest CCS rapid chargers for speedy top-ups.

The DeLorean DMC-12, the vision of former GM executive John DeLorean, was designed in partnership with Lotus, built in Belfast and launched in mid-1981.

Boasting dramatic wedge styling and crowd-pulling gullwing doors, the composite-construction car’s headline feature was its stainless-steel bodywork, guaranteed not to rot.

The tech has stood the test of time; remarkably, three-quarters of the 9,000-plus DeLoreans built are still on the road.

The low-tech Renault V6 engine was always the weakest link of the DeLorean DMC-12.

Strangled by catalysts to meet strict US emissions regulations, it produced just 130hp, meaning performance was infamously tepid.

Electrogenic’s drop-in conversion, which is fully reversible, replaces the lukewarm V6 engine with an electric motor producing nearly 220hp.

This motor drives a fixed-ratio gearbox that drives the rear wheels.

It has a 43kW battery pack, which is fitted in place of the fuel tank under the front luggage compartment and above the electric motor in the rear.

Performance is transformed.

The petrol-powered DeLorean huffed and puffed to 60mph from rest in just over 10 seconds; the Electrogenic DMC-12 takes under 5 seconds.

It is the first Electrogenic car to have launch control, too.

There is instant torque and ample power reserves at any speed on the move.

It also has adjustable regenerative braking and selectable drive profiles, from range-enhancing ‘Eco’ to ultra-sharp ‘Sport’.

Given its starring role in Back to the Future, the EV has fittingly futuristic extra features, too, including touchscreen Apple CarPlay and a bespoke virtual dashboard that displays drive modes, battery usage, and charge status.

The air conditioning system has been enhanced, and the EV system has vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, so owners can charge a laptop, power a fridge, or even charge another car on the go.

Electrogenic CEO Steve Drummond says the DeLorean DMC-12 is set to be a sure-fire star of Salon Privé 2024.

“Our engineering team has been blown away by the response it gets from the public; it generates interest and excitement like nothing else.

“You’re constantly being stopped by DeLorean fans asking for pictures or wanting to take a closer look at the car.

“It’s clear that the DMC-12 holds a special place in the hearts of many.”

Salon Privé Director David Bagley said:

“The world-famous DeLorean is always a huge draw and this incredible development from Electrogenic creates arguably the finest DMC-12 ever.

“The engine was always its weakest link, so replacing it with a powerful, long-range electric drivetrain arguably turns it into the high-tech sci-fi car it should have been.

“That Electrogenic is a British firm based just up the road from Blenheim Palace in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, makes its appearance at Salon Privé 2024 even more fitting.

“I can’t wait to see the reaction to this fantastic development, which our guests from the UK and internationally will find fascinating.”

Salon Privé Week 2024 runs from 27th to 31st August.

Sporty Andy is ADSA’s New Education Supremo

A new education and training supremo has joined the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) to help deliver new structures and policies to support its training delivery and give it ‘fresh eyes and a new perspective’.

Andy Tilley has been appointed as ADSA’s new Business Administrator/Training Tutor & Education.

He has a wealth of experience in education and commercial training but is new to the world of powered pedestrian doors.

Andy said:

“For me, that’s meant learning the industry from the ground up and getting involved in day-to-day operations, from understanding how training booking systems operate and how the CSCS card system works to setting up a training room.

“The ADSA team has been really responsive to someone who has come in with a training mindset, set of expectations and even vocabulary totally different from anything it has probably come across before.

“As a result, we have already made subtle changes to our excellent existing suite of training programmes.”

He added:

“It takes a lot of courage for people in an already successful organisation to be open to considering new ways of doing things mooted by ‘the new boy’.

Andy began his career as a sports journalist and, in his spare time, still enjoys ‘groundhopping’ - visiting ‘obscure’ non-league football grounds across Europe, which he combines with a love of photography.

He has worked extensively in primary and secondary education, including with young people who have special educational needs and disabilities, and as a commercial tutor delivering Health & Safety, Manual Handling, Care Sector and First Aid qualifications to industry and public sector organisations.

Andy has also worked with disengaged young people – those who were absent or at risk of becoming absent from education – and over-50s who had been unemployed for long periods.

Originally from Derby and a graduate of Aberdeen University, Andy has an MA Hons in Philosophy and AET qualifications in Education And Training and as an Assessor/Coach.

ADSA MD Ken Price welcomed Andy to the team:

“We are delighted Andy has joined the team. Learning and development is a very big part of ADSA’s ‘offer’.

“His expertise will help reinforce our output and ensure that it remains robust and adaptable in order to meet the changing needs of our industry.”

For more information on ADSA services, visit: www.adsa.org.uk or email: info@adsa.org.uk

Top Trends in Residential Hardware

To gain an insight into what matters most to customers in the residential market in 2024, we spoke to members of the HOPPE (UK) sales team.

They work closely with both distributors and specifiers, giving a unique perspective on preferences and trends across the sector.

Creating kerb appeal

According to business development manager Darren Shufflebotham, polished brass is becoming less popular.

Once a finish of choice among homeowners, it’s now being replaced with black, graphite and satin chrome instead – all of which products in the ARRONE suited kerb appeal range are available in.

Andy Matthews, HOPPE (UK) head of sales, commented on the type of handle that’s taken the residential market by storm. He said:

“When you look at any housing estate these days, lots of homes have composite doors with full-length pull handles – often with an anthracite grey finish.

“You can have full-length pull handles on timber doors, too, which works well because they usually have plain, flat faces.

“Generally, a pull handle is 316-grade stainless steel, meaning it can easily withstand the often-unpredictable weather in the UK.

“For example, it would easily beat the 480-hour salt spray test detailed in BS EN 1670:1998 on building hardware corrosion resistance.”

Co-ordinated hardware

“Customers are becoming savvier when it comes to choosing a product such as a composite door for their house,”

Darren said:

“They want it to look good, and this means coordinated hardware is now very popular.”

Andy added:

“For internal hardware, bronze and satin gold are becoming very popular, and both complement each of the external finishes mentioned above perfectly.”

He has also spotted a trend for suited hardware, whereby ironmongery complements the door design.

For example, customers might choose to have matching window handles externally and cabinet hardware internally.

Ensuring its available product ranges reflect customer demand, the suited range from ARRONE also makes it easier for door manufacturers to source high-quality ironmongery in a range of finishes that complement both contemporary and traditional external door designs.

Selected ARRONE door handles, knockers, letter plates and numerals are part of the suited range and are available in seven different finishes.

Sustainability and durability

According to Andy, the desire for sustainable products is only growing:

“While price is important to customers, they are increasingly seeking hardware that has been produced using eco-friendly materials in a sustainable way,”

He said:

“Sustainability is being driven by homeowners and there is demand for more durable materials – particularly those that are less prone to corrosion.”

Remaining safe and secure

Security is also high on the list of priorities for customers looking for quality hardware that is both on trend and meets their safety requirements.

The TS 007 Kitemark standard, created by the Door & Hardware Federation and the Glass & Glazing Federation, was launched in 2011 in response to growing concerns about opportunist burglars.

This provides a level of security for replacement hardware.

Darren said:

“Nowadays, customers are more knowledgeable about security.”

“The TS 007 specification, created by the Door & Hardware Federation and the Glass & Glazing Federation in response to growing concerns about opportunist burglars, provides a level of security for replacement hardware.”

To comply with TS 007, the cylinder and the hardware around it must have a cumulative total of 3 stars. This can be achieved by using either a 3* cylinder on its own or a 1* cylinder combined with 2* security door hardware.

Designed to enclose the locking cylinder to protect against extraction, the HOPPE Atlanta Security Handle has been tested to standards recommended by Secured by Design and has received the 2* TS 007 CertiSecure accreditation for door hardware.

A changing marketplace

Architectural business development manager Donna Davison reflected on how much the residential market has changed over the past eight to 10 years. She said:

“Before, clients were looking for levers at a low cost but now their budgets appear to be greater as they are willing to pay more to get style, quality and longevity.

“Previously, hardware specification was done with the architect, interior designer and the client sitting around a table looking at options.

“Now, because of the internet, products are being cherry picked based on appearance, without considering whether other products for the door are available in the matching finish or whether it’s tested.

“That’s why it’s vital to consider the reputation of the manufacturer, to make sure the product quality matches up to its look and feel.”

P C Henderson Launches New Internal Folding System for Room Dividers and Wardrobes

Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer, P C Henderson, are pleased to announce the launch of their new internal folding system – Huskyfold 30. Replacing the company’s original Husky Folding system, Huskyfold 30 brings with it many exciting new features to ensure high performance and easy installation.

Suitable for folding room dividers and wardrobe doors weighing up to 30kg each, Huskyfold 30 is the perfect system to introduce flexible living in the home.

When open, doors fold to one or both sides of the opening to adjoin two rooms and create an open space – perfect for when entertaining.

When closed, the doors act as a partition to create two intimate spaces.

Dave Newton, Sales & Commercial Director at P C Henderson, commented:

“With the successful launch of our Husky 120 Pro flagship product in 2022 and the positive feedback we received from customers, we wanted to utilise similar components to create an internal folding system which boasted the same benefits of easy installation, low initial friction and smooth operation. As a result, Huskyfold 30 was created”.

Designed with the installer in mind, Huskyfold 30 is perfect for both DIY projects and professional installations.

The system features a spring-loaded top pivot and innovative hanger assembly to allow the doors to be hung quickly and easily.

Other exciting new features include high quality hinges to allow for minimal clearance between the doors, a concealed bottom pivot for improved door rotation and surface mounted components to remove the need for routing.

Huskyfold 30 has also been designed without the need for a guide channel to allow for a clear walkway between rooms.

Dave Newton continued:

“Our original Husky Folding system was launched over 30 years ago and, although the system performed well, research indicated that we needed a solution to cater for additional door configurations for enhanced flexibility – Huskyfold 30 does just that”.

Available in kit pack format, Huskyfold 30 now caters for an increased number of door configurations and allows for the incorporation of a swing door.

A fittings kit is also available for applications which require additional doors.

EBD Steel Doors Achieves Dual Certification for Enhanced Fire and Smoke Protection

EBD Steel Doors proudly announces the achievement of dual certification for its products, significantly enhancing their fire and smoke protection capabilities.

The company has successfully completed the EN 1634-3 smoke control tests, adding the Sa4 ambient temperature smoke leakage classification to its existing EI(2)60 fire resistance classification.

This dual performance standard applies to EBD's EBD65-FireEI, EBD44-FireE, and EBD44-EXT.FireE door types, underscoring their excellence in both fire resistance and smoke control.

Comprehensive Protection Standards

These doors meet the rigorous EN 1634-1 (fire resistance) and EN 1634-3 (smoke control) standards, ensuring comprehensive protection.

Suitable for single and double leaf doorsets, these products can also include vision panels, providing flexibility and enhanced safety for various applications.

The advanced testing measures air leakage at different pressures, ensuring minimal smoke passage for optimal safety.

EBD's exceptional results enable the production of doors with clear opening heights up to 2950mm, showcasing their ability to provide flexible solutions for oversized doors.

Understanding Smoke Control Doors: Sa3 vs. Sa4

In June 2023, updates to the fire resistance classification standard (EN 13501-2) brought changes to the smoke leakage classification.

Previously, the EN 1634-3 smoke control test standard was a little controversial as it allowed the gap beneath the door to be sealed with impermeable material, potentially misrepresenting real-world behaviour.

EBD welcomes the recent clarifications, especially concerning smoke leakage at ambient temperature.

The latest version of EN 13501-2 introduces two classifications: Sa3 and Sa4, denoting whether the door has been tested with seals on three sides (vertical sides and head) or four sides (including the threshold).

Superior Performance with Sa4 Classification

The EBD65-FireEI has achieved the Sa4 classification, demonstrating superior smoke control performance without the need for sealing the gap beneath the door.

The updated EN 13501-2 classification reports for EBD65-FireEI, EBD44-FireE, and EBD44-EXT.FireE products are based on modern test evidence from the past three years.

This standard is crucial for fire resistance and smoke control classification, ensuring the doors meet the highest safety standards.

Key Highlights:

  • EN 13501-2 Focus: This standard concentrates on fire resistance and smoke control, classifying performance into categories such as E (integrity), I (insulation), and W (radiation).
  • Updated 2023 Edition: The latest reports are based on the current standard, utilising modern test evidence.
  • Continuous Investment: EBD Steel Doors prioritises up-to-date testing and certification, avoiding reliance on outdated reports and assessments.

Commitment to Safety and Quality

EBD adheres to the recently revised 2023 edition of the classification standard, incorporating modern test evidence obtained in the last three years.

The company's ongoing investment in testing and certification ensures its products are verified to the latest standards, demonstrating a dedication to safety and quality.

By sharing these advancements, EBD Steel Doors aims to inform its clients and partners of its commitment to delivering top-tier fire and smoke protection solutions.

For further information on products from EBD Steel Doors, visit www.ebdsteeldoors.com, email sales@ebdsteeldoors.com or call +44 (0)2920 36 11 11.

Expert advice for dealing with each type of trade waste

More than four in five (83%) UK tradespeople aren’t sure what they can and can’t recycle.

After a new report found that plastic waste by the UK construction industry is growing 15 times faster than the EU, experts have shared their top bits of advice for tradespeople on how to dispose of each type of waste.

Research by IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest supplier of specialist ironmongery, found that more than four in five (83%) UK tradespeople aren’t sure exactly which materials can and can’t be recycled and almost nine in ten (87%) aren’t confident about waste management regulations.

With this in mind, IronmongeryDirect partnered with William Hobbs, sustainability and recycling expert at MyJobQuote.co.uk, and Pauline Marchant, Customer Service Administrator at iWaste, to provide expert advice on what to do with each type of work waste and the rules that you need to follow.

Which materials can and can’t be recycled?

RECYCLABLE
  • Cardboard
  • Plasterboard
  • Cables/WEEE waste
  • Monitors
  • Paper
  • Scrap metal
  • Garden waste
  • Tyres
  • Glass bottles and jars (green, clear, brown)

NON-RECYCLABLE
  • Plastic bags
  • Polystyrene bubble wrap
  • Oils
  • Ceramics
  • Ovenware
  • Lightbulbs
Pauline explains further:
  • Cardboard—As heavy-duty paper, cardboard can be easily recycled because its fibres were previously processed from trees.
  • Plasterboard - It is possible to recover the gypsum from the plasterboard and recycle the component parts back into raw materials to help produce new plasterboard.
  • Cables/WEEE waste - These can be separated into components, and the raw materials reused.
  • Monitors - The components can be removed and sent to a specialist glass processor. The glass and other elements can be separated and reused.
  • Paper—Paper will be separated into different types and grades, washed to remove the ink and glue, and then made into new products.
  • Scrap metal – It can be smelted down and reused.
  • Tyres - They can either be turned into tyre-derived fuel or fed into a shredder and be reused as rubber.
What should I do with each type of waste material? - William Hobbs

1) Hazardous waste

“It has been illegal to mix hazardous and non-hazardous waste during the disposal process since 2004. Once the hazardous waste has been identified, it must be kept separate from non-hazardous waste. To dispose of hazardous materials, you should use authorised businesses and complete and keep all necessary paperwork.” Examples of hazardous waste include: oils and filters, fluorescent lightbulbs and tubes, oily rags, lithium batteries and paints.

2) Landfill waste

“Inert and food waste are both included in landfill waste. Landfill waste can result from both domestic and commercial activity. To stop waste from being disposed of in a landfill, you should take steps to recover or reuse it. Any waste that cannot be disposed of in another way can be processed at a landfill.”

3) Scrap waste

“Scrap can refer to various wastes, including metal and other by-products of the manufacturing process. Scrap metal should be classified as magnetic or non-magnetic. If applicable, separate it into hazardous and non-hazardous waste. A permit may also be required.”

4) Bulky waste

“Bulky waste includes oversized items such as mattresses and furniture, refrigerators, and other white goods. Large objects are disposed of separately from regular commercial waste, as they are difficult to lift. Bulky items are typically discarded as needed. When you need to dispose an item, decide with your waste management company or local council for a unique collection.”

5) Other trade waste

“Most construction or renovation waste, such as plaster, rubble, and tiles, is classed as builders' waste. Because builders' waste encompasses a wide range of materials, it is governed by a variety of waste codes, identifying which are hazardous and non-hazardous.”

Which waste rules and regulations do I need to be aware of?

Waste carrier license

William: “Anyone who collects waste from a client's location must have an Environment Agency waste carrier licence. It is illegal to remove waste for customers without a licence, and fines of up to £5,000 are levied.

“Lower tier and upper tier waste carrier licences are available. If you are only removing your waste and not construction or demolition waste, you should register as a lower tier carrier. Upper tier is the most common and is used by anyone who removes other people's waste and construction and demolition waste.

“Soil, concrete, bricks, glass, wood, plasterboard, asbestos, metal, and plastics are standard construction and demolition waste components. Plumbers removing an old boiler and kitchen installers removing an old kitchen, for example, both require an upper tier licence.”

Waste disposal registration

Pauline: “You should always ensure your waste disposal company is registered with the environment agency, has the correct insurances, provides you with waste transfer notes/duty of care note, can provide evidence of correct disposal and has separate arrangements for hazardous waste.”
