Guthrie Douglas Support Innovative New Door

When a Guthrie Douglas customer developed an energy saving, fast action, insulated door, they turned to the company’s drives and controls to maximise the environmental returns.

The new two-in-one door replaces the need to have a rapid-action fabric door and security shutter on the same opening. The customer installed three of the doors for a factory that manufactures overhead gantry cranes.

The end user wanted to achieve reduced CO2 emissions and reduced heating costs. They required fast door operation to prevent heat loss from production areas and timed close operation to prevent the doors being left open. They also wanted the ability to open the doors only part way – the openings are large enough for the finished cranes but are used most often by forklift trucks.

Having assessed the size of the doors and the high-speed opening/closing times required, Guthrie Douglas recommended their Safedrive® Fi range of drives. They also provided TS970 panels with auto-close and part-open facility. By advising the use of individual forklift radio controls, it was also possible to keep operation of the doors to authorized users and prevent the number of times the large factory door was opened.

By showing the benefits of the complete package, the end user obtained a grant from the Carbon Trust towards the cost of the door installation.
