Sun, sand, sea and... garage doors that thrive by the shore

With vigorous weather and salt laden sea breezes, any build within three miles of the coast is especially vulnerable to harsh weathering and corrosion.

For these locations, there is no better garage door to turn to than Garador’s GaraRoll roller garage doors. These beautifully engineered garage doors have been especially designed to offer maximum protection in coastal regions.

Rust resistance is key, and with GaraRoll this problem has been minimised by creating the entire curtain from aluminium. Unlike steel or timber, aluminium offers high resistance to both salt corrosion and moisture damage to ensure resilience and long life even in the harshest conditions.

Garador’s GaraRoll doors are also finished is a specially durable paint coating, which will keep its depth and colour.

Driveway space and storage can be a key aspect in seaside properties and here GaraRoll offers a number of real advantages. With its neat roll up design, you can park right up to the garage door, while internally GaraRoll is perfect for holidaymakers wanting to maximise the use of garage storage space, offering full access to roof or loft storage.

Garador’s GaraRoll also offers a number of additional advantages, including a pressure sensitivity facility built into the operator, a unique stop and reverse feature that recognises any obstruction in the path of the door curtain.

This top engineered Garador GaraRoll roller garage door comes in a wide range of colours – including of course Traffic White, a top favourite for coastal properties. The door is also available in full timber effect and Deco Paint finishes to enhance both traditional and modern style homes.

MG is powering up for 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed by confirming that two, breathtaking design showpieces Cyberster Black and Cyber X will make their European debuts over July 10-13. MG will also unveil two new, technologically advanced EVs at Goodwood with the first opportunity to see them being at 11 am on Thursday, 10 July.

The spectacular MG Cyberster electric two-seat convertible will return to Goodwood sporting a colour scheme worthy of the exclusive Goodwood Drivers Ball. MG Cyberster Black features a luxurious deep black paint treatment which further elevates the car to create an elegant image with contrasting chrome accents and impactful all-black interior.

The rugged and compact Cyber X concept showcases the exciting potential of the ‘Cyber’ sub-brand and takes MG into the city with a provocative, head-turning and youthful EV ‘urban explorer’ complete with eye-catching pop-up headlamps and extremely short front and rear overhangs which accentuate a grounded, agile posture and its ability to handle complex urban and suburban roads.

Envisioned by MG’s Vice President of SAIC Design, Jozef Kaban, Cyber X underlines MG’s commitment to creating cars with character and soul in the electric age and exploring the creative potential of the MG marque as it begins a second century of vehicle production.

Jozef Kaban says: “We’re looking forward to introducing the original Cyber X and elegant Cyberster Black. MG has a tradition of creating emotive cars that stand-out from the crowd and we’re passionate about continuing this work as well as exploring how we might take the brand in some new, unexpected directions.”

30 years of IFO and QUBUS

IFO and QUBUS are prominent German service providers specialising in surface engineering and metalwork. Established in 1995, they have built a reputation for delivering practical, solution-oriented advice and comprehensive services to clients across various industries.

Their expertise encompasses laboratory services, damage assessments, industrial research, quality inspections, certifications, and more. With a team of over 90 professionals, including chemists, engineers, and economists, they currently serve more than 2,000 customers in over 50 countries worldwide.

On 11th July this year IFO and QUBUS will celebrate their 30th anniversary, marking three decades of innovation and excellence in surface technology. The milestone is being commemorated with various events and initiatives, including participation in major industry trade fairs such as PaintExpo and Surface Technology Germany.

These events provide an opportunity to showcase their latest advancements and reinforce their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. The anniversary celebrations also serve as a testament to their enduring partnerships and the trust they’ve cultivated with clients over the years.

IFO (Institut für Oberflächentechnik) serves as the independent third-party inspectorate for QUALICOAT UK & Ireland, playing a crucial role in upholding the integrity of architectural powder coating standards across the region. All licensed applicators undergo bi-annual, unannounced inspections conducted by IFO to ensure strict adherence to the QUALICOAT Specification.

These evaluations encompass comprehensive assessments of pretreatment processes, coating application methods, and laboratory testing protocols, thereby guaranteeing consistent quality and performance in coated aluminium products. This rigorous inspection regime not only reinforces the credibility of the QUALICOAT label but also provides architects, specifiers, and end-users with confidence in the durability and reliability of coated aluminium used in construction projects.

Beyond routine inspections, IFO actively contributes to each members meeting and the professional development of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland members through specialised training programs. Laboratory technicians from licensed applicators are required to attend refresher courses at least once every two years, ensuring they remain abreast of the latest advancements in coating technologies and testing methodologies.

These training sessions, often hosted in collaboration with industry partners, cover topics such as chrome-free pretreatment analysis and the application of advanced measurement equipment. Additionally, IFO hosts annual meetings for QUALICOAT UK & Ireland members at its headquarters in Germany, fostering a collaborative environment for discussing specification updates and industry best practices.

Directors of IFO and QUBUS, Christian Deyhle, Marc Holz, Michael Müller, Ulrich Mäule, recently issued an invitation to their Anniversary Celebrations: “We are delighted to invite you to celebrate 30 years of IFO and QUBUS with us! On Friday, July 11th, 2025, we would be honoured to have you join us for a special anniversary celebration at our company headquarters in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Our journey began in 1995 with the founding of IFO and QUBUS, and over the past three decades, we have grown into a unique network of surface technology services.

"We have supported nearly 4,000 customers in 75 countries around the world, and we are incredibly grateful for the trust you have placed in us and the collaborative partnership we have built. We would like to express our deepest gratitude for your continued support and take joy in what we have achieved together.”

We look forward to continuing our working relationship with IFO as our third-party accreditation service in the coming years. Should you wish to attend a members meeting and apply for membership of QUALICOAT please get in touch. All QUALICOAT UK & Ireland members are available to offer advice and can be found on the Association website at qualicoatuki.org

Historic Renovation Masterfully Blends Heritage with Modern Security to Earn Police Acclaim

A stunning Victorian building in the shadow of London's Imperial War Museum has been celebrated at the annual Secured by Design (SBD) awards. The project, which transformed the historic property into a state-of-the-art architect's practice, received a 'Highly Commended' honour for its sophisticated approach to security.

Nestled within Southwark's West Square Conservation Area, the renovation required a delicate balance between preserving the building's unique character and integrating robust, modern security. The challenge was to secure the unoccupied property against local crime risks while respecting its heritage. Working closely with EPR architects from November 2019, the local police Designing Out Crime Officer was instrumental in guiding this process.

The result is a seamless fusion of old and new. Key security enhancements include:
  • PAS 24 certified heritage-style sash windows and a new timber front door
  • A discreet, access-controlled inner door to manage visitor entry
  • Comprehensive CCTV and a monitored intruder alarm with glass sensors
  • Strategic lighting and the reinstatement of historic boundary gates

This project stands as a testament to how thoughtful collaboration can protect a piece of history, creating a secure and inspiring workspace for the future.

Receiving the award, Metropolitan Police Designing Out Crime Officer Alan Denyer said: “It was a pleasure to work with EPR on the crime prevention and SBD recommendations for this development. The result is a secure development that provides reassurance to those working at the location whilst respecting the architectural significance of the building."

Edward Wood, Associate Director EPR Architects, said: “As a reinvention of an existing Victorian building, the transformation of All Saints has not only provided us with a beautiful new studio but has also significantly enhanced the building’s security measures.

“Achieving a Secured by Design Development Award certificate, our design introduced a fully integrated alarm and surveillance system and access control measures, including bespoke gates to the side of the building. Due to its historic nature, the integration of physical security upgrades needed to be carefully considered from the outset to ensure their appearance complimented the detailing of the existing building.

“With all the new measures and upgrades seamlessly in place, we feel confident that All Saints is a safe and secure workspace for the EPR team.”

The Engineer’s Evolution: Why Upskilling is Key in a Shifting Industry

The door industry is no longer defined by mechanical know-how alone. As automatic doors become increasingly integrated with access control, safety systems, and smart technology, the role of the engineer is evolving at speed. Today, engineers need a broader skill set; spanning electrics, compliance, fault finding, and customer service.

This shift presents both a challenge and an opportunity. With legislation tightening and client expectations rising, the need to upskill is more vital than ever.

Knowledge is power, and protection

A key driving force behind this evolution is the requirement for compliance. Standards such as the BS EN16005, which outlines the safe use of automatic doors for pedestrian use, makes it clear that engineers must be trained and competent. Failure to meet these standards can put lives at risk and leave companies vulnerable under the Health & Safety at Work Act and the The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC

Compliance with BS EN16005 not only ensures the safe installation and maintenance of automatic doors but also supports adherence to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. While the directive is a legal requirement for machinery placed on the market or brought into service, BS EN16005 is the harmonised standard that outlines how to achieve safety in powered pedestrian doors.

By completing accredited training in BS EN16005, such as that offered by the ADIA, engineers demonstrate competence and due diligence, playing a crucial role in ensuring installations meet both legal and safety expectations.

But compliance isn’t just a legal necessity, it’s also a professional one. Engineers who understand risk assessment, programming, and component compatibility are far more effective at delivering long-term, fault-free solutions. That’s why the Automatic Door Installation Association has built its training framework around both safety and technical excellence.

Accessible, accredited, and engineer-focused

At the core of the ADIA’s offering is a selection of online City & Guilds-accredited training courses, delivered to ensure engineers not only understand but can apply what they learn. These include:

· BS EN16005 – covering safety standards, risk assessments, and force testing

· Service & Maintenance – offering hands-on guidance on various operators, fault diagnosis, and component checks

· Access Control Safety and Industrial Door Safety – supporting engineers working with integrated and specialist systems

Courses also incude turnstiles, fire door safety, health and safety and more.

What makes ADIA’s approach unique is its accessibility. The courses are available online, making it easier for engineers to train at their own pace, wherever they’re based. The association also offers refresher courses, ensuring engineers maintain compliance and stay current with industry developments.

Investment with impact

For companies, investing in staff training brings measurable benefits: reduced call-backs, improved safety on site, and stronger client trust. And with ADIA membership, training is either discounted or completely free, depending on the course.

Members also benefit from:

· Inclusion in the DoorSafe Register, showcasing qualifications to clients

· A technical helpline

· Business support via Citation

· Access to free job advertising and promotional opportunities

· Discounts on tools, insurance, fuel, and more

· Free online service forms

In short, the ADIA equips engineers with the tools they need—not just to meet standards, but to exceed them.

Keep moving forward

The industry isn’t standing still. As door systems become more sophisticated, only those who embrace lifelong learning will thrive. Whether you’re a sole engineer or part of a growing firm, upskilling is no longer optional, it’s essential.

And with the right support, it’s also more achievable than ever.

Round the corner gates: perfectly suited to limited spaces

Say goodbye to the hassle of cramped spaces… The aluminium round-the-corner gate is the ideal solution; it makes life easier for installers working in confined areas. No more struggling with insufficient return widths or driveways that are too short.

Its appeal is further enhanced by its two possible configurations: small and large spandrels

• Large spandrel: perfect for limited return space, offering a generous opening width.

• Small spandrel: designed for deep driveways, with a narrower opening width.

Its discreet motor, elegantly concealed behind a cover panel, blends seamlessly with the structure for a clean, modern finish.

Thanks to its articulated panels that slide at an angle along a wall, no lateral clearance is required, freeing up valuable ground space.

It also does not require additional depth for sliding clearance, meaning the gate can be opened even when a vehicle is parked nearby — with no risk of obstruction.

Easy installation, reliable performance

Round-the-corner gates offer a clear advantage for installers: their versatility allows them to adapt to a wide range of site configurations, while wall-mounted fixings minimize the need for structural work. This makes installation faster and less disruptive.

For homeowners, the benefits are just as compelling. The gate’s robust construction ensures high levels of security, while its smooth automation makes daily use effortless. Its sleek, customisable design integrates seamlessly into any residential setting.

A true win-win solution: combining efficiency and flexibility for installers with comfort, safety, and long-term value for users.

Sectional gates

Available in 32 models from the Archy range and eight models from the Trady range; each gate can be tailored to suit your specific needs, whether in terms of materials, features, automation, finishes, or colours.

Gordon Murray Group confirms double debut for ‘Special Vehicles’ at Monterey Car Week

British advanced automotive engineering and design company, Gordon Murray Group (GMG), has announced that its new ‘Special Vehicles’ division will reveal its first two models on 15 August at The Quail – A Motorsport Gathering, during Monterey Car Week.

The first of the two new supercars represents a bespoke customer commission, with the second car designed by the Gordon Murray Special Vehicles (GMSV) team. Details of the two cars will remain under wraps until The Quail unveiling in California, but the Gordon Murray ethos of lightweight design and engineering art design are at the heart of both new vehicles.

The news comes as T.50 customer car production nears its conclusion, with the entire 100-unit exclusive production run set for completion by the end of July. Built at GMA’s new Highams Park headquarters and purchased by owners from 19 countries around the world, the T.50 is the purest expression of Driving Perfection.

Phillip Lee, Gordon Murray Group CEO: “We are excited to take our existing customers on our GMSV journey in addition to bringing new owners into the Gordon Murray family. We are excited to offer customers the opportunity to create the bespoke supercar of their dreams with the GMSV design and engineering teams. We’re also enthusiastic to show the world’s automotive fans our most unique expressions of the Gordon Murray Automotive ethos through GMSV.”

The Gordon Murray Group took the decision to streamline its product launch plans, revising the timeline for the next generation of the GMA T.33 to fall after the peaks of summertime activity. The Group will focus on celebrating 60 years of car design by company founder Professor Gordon Murray CBE at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, before launching the two all-new GMSV models in California during August.

Professor Gordon Murray, Group Executive Chairman: “I can barely believe it’s been 60 years I’ve been designing and engineering race and road cars – I can’t wait to reminisce with the thousands of fans at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Gordon Murray Special Vehicles double debut that follows just a month later will offer customers old and new even more ways to be part of our celebration of cars and driving.”

The Gordon Murray team confirmed the complete line up of models that will feature as part of the 60 years of car design celebrations at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The list includes the full Gordon Murray Automotive line up of T.50, T.50s Niki Lauda, and T.33 prototypes alongside key models from the 60-year car design career of Gordon Murray.

2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed – Gordon Murray 60-year celebration vehicles

· 1967 IGM Ford (T.1) – The first model designed by Gordon in 1965 and raced in 1967 and 1968 in South Africa, before he moved to the UK.

· 1972 Duckhams LM (T.3) – Murray designed a 3-litre prototype for racing driver Alain de Cadenet to drive in 1972 at Le Mans. Backed by the Duckhams oil company, Gordon completed this moonlight project within six months. It finished 12th overall and 5th in its class.

· 1972 IGM Formula 750 (T.4) – Designed during his first two years at Brabham, Gordon had to abandon the project mid-build when Bernie Ecclestone promoted him at Brabham. It was the first car design with rod-operated rising rate suspension – a setup subsequently adopted by most Formula One teams in the early 1980s and carried through to the racing cars of today.

· 1974 BT44 (T.6) – Gordon’s first car to win a Formula One race (South Africa, Kyalami Circuit). It also ended the season with a one-two finish, and the fastest lap at Watkins Glen.

· 1975 Brabham BT44B – Subtle changes were made to the BT44 for the 1975 season including stiffening the front of the monocoque, and more carefully honed aerodynamics. The car won at Interlagos, Brazil and the Nürburgring, Germany contributing to the team’s second place position in the Constructor’s Championship.

· 1976 BT45 (T.7) – The Brabham team’s first exploration of a 12-cylinder engine (an Autodelta SpA 3-litre flat-12 engine) [Static]

· 1978 Brabham BT46B ‘Fan Car’ (T.9) – For the 1978 season, regulations stated that any part of the car with a primary function designed to affect aerodynamic performance had to remain stationary relative to the car. Gordon realised that he could therefore develop a fan system with a primary function of cooling the radiator, and a secondary function of ‘sucking’ the car to the ground. The car infamously won the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix with Niki Lauda at the wheel before being withdrawn under Bernie’s orders ‘for the good of the Championship’.

· 1981 BT49 (T.11) – After a 14-year hiatus from its last Drivers’ Championship victory, Brabham finished at the top of the table in 1981 thanks to this ingenious design. Murray and his colleague David North developed a hydro-pneumatic suspension system, which automatically held the car low once the natural aerodynamic forces had pushed it down, neatly circumnavigating a new rule banning driver-operated systems that had the same effect.

· 1983 Brabham BT52 (T.15) – Following a rule change that outlawed skirted cars, Murray removed the side pods, moving 7% more weight to the rear axle. As the first model to consistently utilise a strategic pit stop, it ended the season winning the Drivers’ Championship with Nelson Piquet.

· 1988 McLaren MP4/4 – This model dominated the 1988 Championship with Senna and Prost taking an unprecedented 15 wins out of 16 races to secure the Drivers’ and Constructors' Championship titles.

· 1992 LCC Rocket – Weighing less than 400 kg, the ‘Light Car Company Rocket’ had a 145 bhp Yamaha engine and a tandem seating setup. Boasting phenomenally agile handling, the power-to-weight ratio far exceeded even the most powerful supercars of the time.

· 1993 F1 XP3 (T.22) – In designing the F1, Gordon envisaged what he believed would make the ultimate road car. It was the world’s first all-carbon fibre road car and the first road car with ground-effect aerodynamics. In 1993, a McLaren F1 prototype reached a record-breaking 231 mph at Nardo. Five years later, Andy Wallace drove the XP5 prototype at Ehra-Lessien, setting a new production car world record of 240.1 mph, a record it still holds today as the fastest naturally aspirated road car.

· 1995 McLaren F1 GTR Short Tail – This iconic racing supercar achieved the 1995 win of the 24 hours of Le Mans. Gordon adapted the regular F1 adding an aerodynamic body kit, carbon brakes, and strengthened suspension, alongside necessary electrical / interior racing revisions.

· 1997 McLaren F1 GTR Long Tail – The ‘Longtail’ F1 GTR weighed around 900kg and produced multiples of the downforce achieved by the ‘short tail’ cars. It was enough to win the GT1 class at Le Mans in 1997.

· 2023 GMA T.50 PS4 – Engineered to be the purest, lightest, most driver-centric supercar ever built, the T.50 is powered by a bespoke 3.9-litre, 670 PS V12 engine that revs to a record-breaking 12,100rpm. It also features the most advanced and effective aerodynamics ever seen on a road car – aided by a 400mm rear-mounted fan.

· 2024 GMA T.50s Niki Lauda XP1 – The T.50s Niki Lauda is an uncompromising track-only supercar that enhances driver engagement even further than its road going sibling. Lighter still than the T.50, at less than 900 kg, the more powerful (772 PS) T.50s delivers a one-of-a-kind on-track driving experience, revving to 12,100 rpm.

· 2025 GMA T.33 AP4 – The classically-proportioned T.33 is packaged with the 617 PS 3.9-litre GMA.2 V12 engine that revs to 11,100 rpm. Offered in coupe and Spider form, the T.33 uniquely delivers the brand’s characteristic ‘driving perfection’ alongside a V12 soundtrack like no other.

CGT Security Ltd: Ticking all the specification requirements

Promoted as Reading’s newest destination and based directly outside the main entrance to Reading train station for ultra-easy connectivity, is a new, design-led development called Station Hill. The six and a half acre site is one of the largest development schemes outside of London.

Combining leisure facilities, restaurants, premier office space and residential dwellings, Station Hill is designed to be a vibrant mixed-use space fostering a “live-work-play” environment and is a project between the joint venture company, Lincoln MGT and Reading Borough Council.

Creating this type of neighbourhood hub inevitably means new parking areas are required too – and as space is always at a premium with such developments, the car park is an underground area with a specification calling for 25% free open air shutters with a LPS 1175 SR2 security rating and a large opening width of over 7 metres.

Whilst perforated shutters to give free air circulation are not unusual, combining the security rating with the large opening area is a more specific combination, with few manufacturers that are able to meet these criteria.

The Intimidator industrial shutter range manufactured by CGT Security, is a collection of high performance shutters with LPS 1175 Issue 8 certified security levels up to and including D10 (SR4) and is also available in larger widths.

The Intimidator IR2 is available in aluminium, stainless steel and galvanised steel with perforations, and can span an opening of up to 8 metres. This made it an ideal choice for both the loading bay shutter as well as the car park shutter, as these both had widths of over 7m. The Intimidator products are also available with a choice of locking options and in this case the client chose solenoid locking.

Being an iconic development for the area, the architects involved also wanted to ensure that the shutter would not detract from the appearance of their design, and as the Intimidator offers attractive styling and was matched to their specific RAL 7021 colour with a satin finish, this gave them exactly the aesthetic that they were looking to achieve.

Performance Doorset Solutions and UAP Host DOCO Awareness Day at Littleborough Site

Leading doorset company Performance Doorset Solutions (PDS), in collaboration with hardware manufacturer UAP, recently hosted a successful Awareness Day for Police Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) at the PDS site in Littleborough, Lancashire.

The event brought together representatives of the two companies with DOCOs from several police forces, including Greater Manchester, Cheshire, West Yorkshire and Lancashire, and was attended by Secured by Design (SBD) Development Officer Hazel Goss. The day served as a valuable opportunity to showcase cutting-edge doorset and hardware security technologies to the specialist officers, whose role is critical in influencing secure design across the built environment.

Attendees were welcomed by the teams at PDS and UAP who each gave introductions to their companies, before diving into a series of product demonstrations and discussions around evolving security threats and innovation. Later in the day, the DOCOs and other assembled guests had the opportunity to tour the PDS facility, learning more about the company’s products and the manufacturing process from raw timber to bespoke doorsets.

Kevin Pritchard, UAP, presented the company’s latest advancements in cylinder security, including a live demonstration of attack methods outlined in the new PAS24:2022+A1:2024 standard. Kevin highlighted how UAP’s new 3-Star Freeze Guard Cylinder, the first to gain Kitemark certification under the updated standard, effectively neutralises threats such as cylinder freezing - a method increasingly used in targeted attacks.

Hazel Goss, Secured by Design, said: “I want to thank PDS for an excellent day, it was a packed full event, with a classroom session, factory tour and an extra bonus of live demonstrations of lock attacks delivered by UAP, another SBD member company. It was a very successful day and I know the DOCOs and I who attended all left knowing a lot more than before, which is why we hold these ‘Awareness Days’.”

Kerri Ellis, Ben Davies, and Gary Greaves represented PDS, while Elliott Dawson and Kevin Pritchard represented UAP, contributing to what was widely regarded as an engaging and productive event.
