Dynamic Lockdown with Abloy at UK Security Expo

Security expert Abloy UK is inviting visitors to Stand L19 at the UK Security Expo 2017 to discuss the latest innovations in access control technology and how compliant escape solutions can contribute to dynamic lockdown.

Taking place on 29-30th November 2017 at London’s Olympia Centre, UK Security Expo is the premier global security showcase.

The risk of terrorism has increased significantly in recent years, posing a security challenge for many organisations. Procedures must be developed to provide a quick response to any fast-moving incident, to make sure sites can be dynamically locked down.

Access control alone really works if all elements of the solution work together including the basic door function, otherwise security and safety can be compromised especially if a non-compliant locking device is used.

Steve Wintle, Head of CNI at Abloy UK, will be leading a seminar on ‘Mitigating Risk using Innovation and Technology’, and visitors are invited to the Technology Workshop Theatre at 12.45pm on 29th November to learn more about solutions to the challenges faced in achieving dynamic lockdown, and innovative new products available.

These include Abloy’s range of high quality compliant locking solutions, including low energy electric locks, LPCB-rated padlocks, and its revolutionary PROTEC2 CLIQ Connect system.

PROTEC2 CLIQ is a cloud-hosted security management solution that allows for the remote management of diverse or large electronic master-keyed sites at any time, from anywhere in the world.

The system provides comprehensive audit trails on cylinders and padlocks, recording who used each key, where and when, with the ability to remove permissions quickly and easily for lost or stolen keys from the system, thereby providing secure key management at all times.

The latest innovation of the system - CLIQ Connect - utilises a revolutionary highly encrypted online management system that uses advanced Bluetooth 4.0 technology, enabling users to update keys wirelessly from their smartphone.

Steve Wintle commented:
“The risk of terrorism is higher than ever before, with threats ranging from unsophisticated and random individuals to pre-meditated terrorist groups.
“The danger may be located directly at a premises and/or in the surrounding vicinity, so its vital areas can be zoned off to prevent the attackers from accessing them, and also stop people moving into zones that may be dangerous.
“Abloy has a range of different systems available that not only aid with dynamic lockdown, but also allow for easy egress in the event of a terror attack.”

Promat SYSTEMGLAS® timber shortlisted for prestigious BWF Award

An innovative system from Promat UK, which provides a multi-pane glazed timber screen with a 60 minute fire resistance rating for integrity and insulation (EI), has been named as a finalist in the 2017 British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Awards.

Shortlisted for the Product Design in Wood Award, Promat SYSTEMGLAS® is a complete glazing system which enables architects and designers to use traditional timber for fire screens in combination with tested fire doors. It is designed and manufactured to combine the natural beauty of a timber product with the functionality of a fire protection material in critical areas, without compromising on aesthetic goals.

The combination of traditional hardwood timber framing as part of a Promat SYSTEMGLAS® installation with butt joined glass products affords an updated and modern appearance, gives a fresh dimension in a market which has typically been dominated by steel and aluminium framing materials. It provides timber screen options which include the ability to vertically or horizontally butt joint the glazing, and also offer a multi-pane timber screen to EI30 and EI60 fire resistance classifications as part of a fully tested timber system.

Within a Promat SYSTEMGLAS® 30 timber screen installation a 30 minute timber fire door can be specified in a matching timber to complete the system offer. All SYSTEMGLAS® products within the range are fully tested at the company’s UKAS accredited first test centre and third party accredited.

Promat SYSTEMGLAS® is installed to the highest standards through a network of approved installers who have their installations checked by Promat’s fire protection specialists. This provides a 360 Wheel of Assurance for fire protection, with the system’s design, manufacture and installation checked for compliance and delivering client peace of mind.

Ian Cowley, General Manager at Promat UK says:
“We’re delighted that SYSTEMGLAS® has been named as a finalist in the BWF Awards. Our designers and engineers have created a system that provides fire safety assurance for the use of timber screens and doors, at a time when the effectiveness of passive fire protection is very much in the spotlight.
“Ultimately it ensures that clients can benefit from the beauty of timber within their buildings, without aesthetic or safety compromise. We’ll be actively promoting SYSTEMGLAS® to the market as part of our Specified for a Reason campaign to build awareness of this timber frame solution, along with its metal framing options, to ensure building designers know safety and design intent can go hand in hand.”

Find out more about Promat SYSTEMGLAS® at www.promat-glass.co.uk.

Jaguar F-Type Landmark Gets Stunning Poppy Appeal Makeover

Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled a 35-foot high Jaguar F-TYPE emblazoned with a bespoke poppy design to mark Remembrance Sunday in partnership with forces’ motorsport charity Mission Motorsport and the Royal British Legion.

The F-TYPE, clearly visible to motorists on the M6 motorway, fittingly faces the Sentinel sculpture which depicts the Spitfires Castle Bromwich was famous for building during World War Two between 1938 and 1945.

The tribute is the latest in a string of commitments from the company as it aims to become the automotive employer of choice for former armed services personnel.

Jaguar Land Rover has hired over 750 former servicemen and servicewomen since 2013 and is a Gold Award holder of the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme, a written and publicised voluntary pledge from businesses and charitable organisations who wish to demonstrate their concrete support for the Armed Forces community.

It has welcomed a total of 29 ex-armed forces personnel on to its Wounded Injured Sick (WIS) programme since 2014, 18 of which have found employment with the UK’s largest automotive manufacturer whilst many others have secured roles within the wider supply base.

The business is also the headline partner of the annual Invictus Games, an international sporting event to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for wounded, injured and sick servicemen, servicewomen and veterans.

Mission Motorsport, the Ministry Of Defence’s charitable authority on motorsport for recovery, created a unique poppy-themed livery for the F-TYPE which sits affixed to the outer wall of Jaguar Land Rover’s Castle Bromwich site where the sports car is built.

The design, emblazoned with the words of John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields written in 1915 in the midst of World War One, was fitted in situ by the charity’s team of ex-servicemen who were discharged from active service with physical and mental injuries.

Ex-servicemen Lance Corporal Chris Read, Guardsman Chris Walker, Private Dan Elliot and Lance Corporal Francis Stokes, who all benefitted from the work of Mission Motorsport, spent more than three weeks designing the unique livery before fitting it directly to the wall-mounted F-TYPE.

A second F-TYPE SVR was adorned with the poppy design at Mission Motorsport’s workshop in Wantage, Oxfordshire. It embarked on a ten-day UK tour in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday, which started at the Royal British Legion’s Birmingham Poppy Day in Victoria Square on Wednesday 1st November.

From there it makes its way around Jaguar Land Rover sites and military landmarks such as the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire before arriving in Anglesey to play the role of safety car for Mission Motorsport’s fourth annual 12-hour endurance event Race of Remembrance.

Gregg Niblett, former Royal Engineer and F-TYPE Senior Manufacturing Manager at Jaguar Land Rover’s Castle Bromwich facility said:

“The Castle Bromwich site has developed a proud reputation of paying tribute to its heritage, the role it played in one of history’s largest conflicts but most importantly those who sacrificed their lives along the way.
“We already have a fantastic working relationship with Mission Motorsport and a track record for recruiting former members of the armed forces, so we felt there was an opportunity to do something truly special as we move into the site’s 80th year next year.
“The project team, made up of colleagues from Jaguar Land Rover, Mission Motorsport and the Royal British Legion, have worked tremendously hard to create a statement of commitment in remembering the fallen and to have that tribute created and brought to life by ex-servicemen who have had first-hand experience of sacrifice is hugely symbolic.
“We’re extremely proud to have this tribute on our wall for the community to see and we hope they join us as we fall silent over on Remembrance weekend.”

Jane Britton, Area Manager West Midlands, Royal British Legion said:

“The Poppy Appeal 2017 is encouraging the public to rethink Remembrance and recognise that the poppy supports the Armed Forces community past and present – it is a symbol of both Remembrance and hope.
“This message is very relevant within the local community and resonates greatly with Jaguar Land Rover, who have employed veterans and worked directly with Mission Motorsport. We are amazed by their support in creating awareness for this year’s Appeal and cannot wait to unveil the Remembrance design at Birmingham Poppy Day on Wednesday 1 November.”

dhf Warning follows Sentencing of Gate Engineer

Robert Churchyard, 52, was jailed for three and a half years on 30th October

dhf (Door & Hardware Federation) is once again highlighting the potentially legal ramifications of failing to ensure gate safety, following the sentencing of gate engineer, Robert Churchyard on Monday.

Last month, Mr Churchyard, 52, was found guilty of the manslaughter of 56-year-old Jill Lunn, who died in April 2013, following an accident involving an unsafe automated gate.

On Monday, Mr Churchyard, who was employed at the time by Automated Garage Doors and Gates Ltd, was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment, with the company fined £12,000 to be paid within 12 months.

This is the first time that an individual has received a custodial sentence for an accident involving an unsafe automated gate and as explained by dhf General Manager, Michael Skelding, this case has set a precedent with regards to the future of safe automated gate installation and maintenance:

“Today’s sentencing serves as a stark warning to everybody involved in the automated gate sector that they must ensure all doors and gates are checked for safety against current standards and regularly maintained by properly trained specialists. As this court case clearly demonstrates, both individuals and companies could face prosecution in the event of an accident.”

He continues: “We encourage individuals and companies involved in the installation or maintenance of automated gates, to contact us should they require guidance on their legal responsibilities. In addition, dhf provides extensive safety training for both member and non-members companies, with its technical specification, DHF TS 011:2016 (the code of practice for the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of powered gates and traffic barriers), freely available to download from the website.”

Darker Evenings Spark Security Concerns for Younger Homeowners

New research reveals that younger homeowners are more security conscious than those over the age of 65.

The research, conducted by door and window hardware manufacturer HOPPE UK, has shown that three quarters of homeowners aged 18-34 worry about their home security more as the clocks go back. Considerably less homeowners over the age of 65 share these concerns, with 60% of respondents saying they don’t worry more during the winter months.

Just under two thirds of respondents aged 18-34 know the security standard of their front and back door handles compared to only half of homeowners over the age of 65, further emphasising younger homeowners’ increased awareness of security.

However, all respondents identified their front door as their first priority if they were looking to improve the security of their home. This was closely followed by their back door and side gate.

The security of any entrance door can be improved instantly using the HOPPE Atlanta security handle set. It is designed to enclose the locking cylinder to protect against extraction. The Atlanta security handle has passed cylinder and door hardware attack tests to deliver enhanced security performance and therefore a greater level of property protection.

Suitable for use on composite and PVC doors, the HOPPE Atlanta security handle has been tested Annex A of PAS24; the minimum standard set by British Standards Institution (BSI). PAS24 accredited hardware helps homeowners to resist the levels and methods of attack most often experienced in the UK that are usually associated with the casual or opportunist burglar.

For further information on the Atlanta security handle please call HOPPE UK on 01902 484400 or visit HOPPE-atlanta-security

Improved weather and security testing capabilities for Wednesbury laboratory

Exova Group Limited (Exova), which was recently acquired by Element Materials Technology (Element) to create one, world-class global testing services partner, has invested in both weather and security testing rigs at its Wednesbury, UK, laboratory to improve the quality of services to customers.

The new equipment will be utilized for weather and security testing doors and windows to BS 6375-1, including air permeability, water tightness and wind resistance. Having previously accommodated weather test samples up to four metres high and three metres wide, Element is now increasing this ability with an additional weather rig able to accept test samples up to a maximum of five metres wide and four metres high.

The laboratory’s security testing capability has also increased with another new rig that will fit samples up to five metres wide and three metres high, giving the facility three security rigs that can be utilised to test simultaneously. A customer requiring a full initial type test program on both doors and windows will be able to carry out the four weather and security tests simultaneously on different test rigs. This will mean test programmes that would have taken several days can now be completed in a fraction of the time.

Rob Veitch, EVP Fire and Building Products, Element, said:
“This investment offers a unique service in the industry. With two weather testing rigs running simultaneously, we will be able to offer customers faster turnaround times, shorter test duration and less client time on site. Our increased capacity for larger test samples will also better accommodate our customers’ evolving technical requirements.”
Valued customer, Westcoast Windows, design and manufacture Swedish composite windows, doors and sliding doors.

John Lawrence, Managing Director, comments:
“We have been working with Exova for over seven years, employing their weather tightness and security testing equipment to enable third party independent certification of our composite windows and doors. Their investment in the new larger testing rigs has enabled us to test our largest sliding doors, which was essential to ensure our full range of products can be encompassed within the Exova BM TRADA Q Mark scheme and Secured by Design accreditation demanded by our customers.”

Element provides testing to British, European and International standards for Secured by Design, CE marking and individual specifier requirements for doors and windows.

Secured by Design is the national police crime prevention initiative, which has worked closely with Element and the industry to help set security standards for doors and windows.

About Element

In June 2017, Element Materials Technology acquired Exova Group Limited to create one, world-class global testing services partner. Element specialises in providing a comprehensive range of materials and product qualification testing, consulting, certification and calibration services to the global Aerospace; Fire & Building Products; Infrastructure & Environmental; Oil & Gas; and Transportation & Industrials sectors.

Element’s expanded network of 6,200 Engaged Experts operate out of nearly 200 laboratories in more than 30 countries and are trusted by organizations to test and advise on the safety, quality, performance and compliance of their products, systems and operations.

Drive and Control Solutions for Challenging Environments from GfA UK Ltd

Since the EU Waste Framework Directive came into force almost ten years ago there have been some major changes to the way waste is dealt with in the UK. This has led to some significant challenges for commissioning agents and door companies called upon to supply suitable products for these difficult environments.

With waste transfer sites storing household waste that’s started the decomposition process (creating both heat and water vapour) leading to high humidity levels coupled with a mildly corrosive atmosphere the drive and control solutions used on the doors are under an unprecedented level of strain.

From experience, GfA know many door drive units and controls have failed in this environment.

Safedrive 75/24 to IP65i specification

In answer to these challenges, GfA has developed IP65i which is an enhanced IP65 drive unit range.

Their drive units in the main are IP65 which offers protection against limited water ingress whereas the IP65i goes one step further, preventing damage caused by the ingress of water vapour, which later condenses out leading to short circuits in the limit switches.

In addition the IP65i drive units feature either specially coated or stainless steel hollow shafts and foot mountings, stainless steel hand chain and a special protective coating finish.

IP65i enhanced protection is available on GfA Safedrive® models from 350 – 1400Nm and GfA Ranger models for roller shutter and sectional overhead doors.

Find out more about the IP65i on the GfA website – www.gfa-elektromaten.co.uk or contact GfA to request a product datasheet.

ASSA ABLOY UK to campaign for mandatory fire door inspections at House of Commons

ASSA ABLOY UK, the global leader in door opening solutions, will be showcasing its fire door safety products at a high-profile House of Commons exhibition tomorrow, seeking to highlight its British brands and expertise in fire door inspections.

Hosted by Ian Austin MP for Dudley North, the ‘Made in the Black Country’ event on Wednesday 1 November will allow local businesses to demonstrate their latest innovations, experience and expertise to MPs and other visitors.

Fire door safety has become an increasingly prominent issue, and ASSA ABLOY UK is hoping the event will provide a valuable opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of fire door inspections.

There are currently no legal obligations to perform maintenance inspections once a fire door has been installed.

ASSA ABLOY UK aims to encourage the government to consider mandatory fire door inspections and maintenance.

ASSA ABLOY UK will also be looking to highlight the company’s renowned manufacturing heritage at the event, as well as how it continues to invest in the local area. Current initiatives include a £3 million revamp to its head office in Willenhall.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Security Doors, explains:
“Three million fire doors are installed every year in the UK, but incorrect specification, poor installation and a lack of maintenance is still common. Fire doors save lives, and it is absolutely critical that they are operating correctly at all times. We will be raising awareness of this important issue at this event, discussing the current challenges with MPs and considering how this can be overcome.
“Manufacturing is an important part of the Black Country’s heritage, and we are proud to have established ourselves as the UK’s leading door opening solutions provider over the years. The event also provides an opportunity to demonstrate the exciting plans we have for the future. We continue to develop our offering to meet ever-evolving customer needs, while investing in our operations to help strengthen the local economy and boost prosperity.”

To raise awareness about the importance of fire door safety, ASSA ABLOY has established a new LinkedIn group – called ‘It’s Time To Talk About Fire Doors’ – to provide a forum for this issue, as well as help connect followers with experts in this field for advice and support.

For more information on ASSA ABLOY UK, please visit www.assaabloy.co.uk.

Smartlock security in the Highlands: Dunalastair Hotel Suites, Kinloch Rannoch, Scotland

Dunalastair Hotel set in the heart of Kinloch Rannoch, was first converted into a hotel at the turn of the last century and originally constructed as a Highland Sporting Lodge. In 2014 the hotel started its multi-million pound refurbishment; creating 32 luxury suites along with an onsite café and refreshment area.

An important aspect of the hotel managements refurbishment plans was to incorporate the very latest access control technology into the new venue, allowing the staff complete flexibility in the management of guest checking in and out, monitoring movement around the premises, together with the ability to provide real-time cancellation and logging in facilities.

Securefast’s state of the art OnDoor Smartlock Wireless Network system provided the perfect solution, incorporating a dedicated server in the hotel reception area with a direct computer link to the Windows based software ASL957 Management system.

This user friendly system allows the staff to easily programme the MiFare cards for the staff and guests with access to doors, groups and areas with time and date validity and shift control using the wireless dongle.

Each of the 32 bedrooms were fitted with the ASL951BW wireless locks in a brushed stainless steel finish which give a single operation on the inside for easy egress and card control from the corridor side with a key override facility should it be needed in an emergency or if the battery power is low.

Each of the individual locks is wirelessly connected to five ASL95BASE base stations positioned around the hotel so that real-time updating is possible. The Base Stations are connected to the server in the reception using Ethernet cables.

The Mifare cards have been printed with the hotel logo and give the hotel the flexibility to be able to link to other applications if needed in the future, such as cashless vending, etc. as these types of cards provide a multi-application memory to store several services on the same card.

The system also has the capability of interfacing with other leading brand PMS systems therefore giving the hotel flexibility and the opportunity to expand or increase the use of its cards in the future.

In addition to controlling access to each of the bedrooms, the Smartlock system also controls the entrance doors into areas of the hotel, with eight ASL950 Control Boxes connected to Smartlock Wall Readers and electric releases.

Since its grand re-opening in May 2017, the staff and management of the hotel have reported that the whole team are delighted with the Smartlock system, especially with the ease of use and total flexibility that the system offers.
