The Ultimate Italian Job Tour to Commemorate the Movie’s 50th Anniversary

Classic car owners are being invited to commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Italian Job on an extraordinary 11-day driving tour which takes in many of the famous roads and locations featured in the movie.

The Ultimate Italian Job Tour, created by Classics on the Road and the Jaguar E-type Club, will treat drivers and their companions to some of Europe’s most fabulous roads and scenery as its route passes through France, Italy and Switzerland between October 6th and 17th 2019.

Highlights of the Tour will include a driving experience on the rooftop test track of Fiat’s former Lingotto factory in Turin, which appeared in the movie’s legendary car chase; driving some of the most spectacular mountain roads in Europe; and an evening with key personalities involved in making the film.

Participants in the Ultimate Italian Job Tour will be accompanied throughout the 1,400-mile drive by a swarm of red, white and blue Minis, and by the red Jaguar E-type roadster, orange Lamborghini Miura P400, and silver Aston Martin DB4 convertible seen in the movie. The Tour visits the St. Bernard Pass, scene of the film’s opening credits, where the Miura was blown-up in a tunnel and the E-type and DB4 also met their fates.

While in Turin, Tour participants will spend a few days in the company of The Italian Job producer Michael Deeley; stunt director Rémy Julienne; actor David Salamone, who played Dominic, one of Charlie Croker’s gang of ‘Chinless Wonders’; and subject-expert Matthew Field, whose new book, The Self Preservation Society – 50 years of The Italian Job, will be published later this year.

The three-day Italian Job experience will also include a private screening of the film; a ‘soirée’ hosted by Field; a Walking Tour in the city of car-chase locations with commentary by Field, visiting the Baroque staircase of the Palazzo Madama, the crowded porticoes on Via Roma, the cathedral steps and the weir on the River Po. Tour participants will also receive a copy of his book.

In keeping with its theme, the Ultimate Italian Job Tour is open exclusively to E-types, and to pre-1970 Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, and Minis.

The price – €5,495 per person in double occupancy or €6,575 per person in single occupancy – includes accommodation in carefully selected four- and five-star hotels in France and Italy; three lunches and 10 dinners; a comprehensive Road Book with Tulip notes, maps, rally plates, information about places being visited, and recommendations of other places worth seeing; a private evening screening of The Italian Job; and guided visits to the Domaine Pommery champagne cellars, Arc-et-Senans Royal Saltworks, Museo Nazionale dell Automobile in Turin, Mont Blanc Skyway, and Matisse Museum in Le Cateau-Cambrésis.

Tour participants will be accompanied by the event organisers, including E-type Club co-founders Philip and Julie Porter in their E-type, the original Italian Job roadster, 848 CRY; a film crew and professional photographer; and a mechanic.

Philip Porter commented:
“The Ultimate Italian Job Tour is going to be amazing. It will be unique and probably the last opportunity to celebrate this iconic movie with key people from the film, combined with fantastic driving, the star cars and informed visits to most of the charismatic locations”.

The Homebuilding & Renovating Show is set to build audience and revenue for trades in 2019

The Homebuilding & Renovating Show experienced one of its most successful years to date in 2018, delivering more than 18,000 engaged and targeted visitors at its last two events covering the North and South West of the UK.

The Northern Homebuilding & Renovating Show, which took place between 2-4 November at Harrogate Convention Centre, stood out by marking its busiest event yet with an eight per cent increase in visitor numbers year on year.

Data gathered from both the Northern and South West events underlines the quality of the audience profile, with over 70 per cent of visitors revealing plans for a live project which will be underway within the next 12 months, and an average project spend of between £118,000-£125,000.

Over 50 per cent of visitors are working on a build project, while 28 per cent are improving their home, and 15 per cent are busy carrying out renovations. Out of these, over 70 per cent of them state they do not attend any other self-build events, expressing loyalty to the Homebuilding & Renovating brand.

The organisers also disclosed that 16 per cent of visitors were trade, an increased figure compared to previous years. These are people interested in discovering the latest industry trends, keen to network with likeminded professionals or wanting to assess the opportunities of exhibiting at future events.

Doors and windows were the most popular category overall, with over 50 per cent of visitors sourcing products and services to match their needs, followed closely by the heating sector. Next on the list are flooring and floor structures, bathrooms and kitchens, and lighting and electrical. Over 80 per cent of guests showed their intention of securing purchases following their attendance at the shows.

Nick Noble, commercial & events director at Future PLC, says,
“Yet again, we have engaged an active, loyal audience who reinforce The Homebuilding & Renovating Show as the market leader in this space. Last year’s shows highlight the commitment and dedication of our discerning visitors to forge ahead with their plans in the New Year, which we already expect to exceed expectations as much of our 2019 stand space has been booked months ahead of schedule."

Merry Albright from Border Oak adds,
“Border Oak has been exhibiting at the Homebuilding & Renovating Shows for almost 20 years and base our marketing calendar around the event dates. Customer interaction is good and post show results indicate that the shows are an important part of business. You get to meet your potential clients (who may not otherwise travel to see you) in a setting that is appropriate and conducive to self building and fact finding - but not pressurised.
“I would recommend it to other companies, especially those who have a great product and possibly haven't tried the shows before as there is a lot of appetite for all industry sectors relating to self build and custom build."

The Homebuilding & Renovating Show is anticipated to offer more events than ever before this year, which commenced with a new show location at Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre last month.

The shows will also be visiting Birmingham from 28-31 March; Glasgow from 1-2 June; Surrey from 29-30 June; London from 4-6 October; Edinburgh from 19-20 October; Harrogate from 1-3 November, and Somerset from 16-17 November.

For those who are still planning their 2019 schedule and are aiming to interact with an audience who is serious about its self-build and renovation ventures, space on the floor is still available.

For more details on upcoming exhibitions, visit www.homebuildingshow.co.uk or contact the sales team on 01527 834418.

Those interested in attending the upcoming Homebuilding & Renovating Show can claim free tickets via homebuildingshow.co.uk/visitus. Additional T&Cs apply: homebuildingshow.co.uk/terms

DHF announces more robust measures for new members following ‘bumper year’

DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) has announced that it has introduced more robust procedures for companies wishing to join its membership following a ‘bumper year’.

The Tamworth-based trade association is renowned industry-wide for its tireless and on-going efforts in raising standards and levels of safety across the sector, and this latest pronouncement is further testament to these continuing endeavours.

The new procedures, which started on 1st October following a tremendous boost in membership since 2017, will mean that all companies wishing to apply for membership will, initially, be referred to as affiliate members until, in the case of applicants involved in automated gates, industrial doors and garage doors, at least one ‘responsible’ person (who can implement changes) in the company has completed the relevant DHF two-day Diploma course(s).  Whilst affiliate members, companies will be unable to use the DHF logo or appear on the DHF website.

Furthermore, all companies applying for membership will also undertake a new Company Compliance Assessment (CCA), a checklist of legal and compliancy requirements specific to the product, and usually involves a visit to their premises by a member of DHF’s experienced training and compliance team and/or a visit to a recent installation, to ensure the company is supplying and installing safe and legally compliant products.

Once these requirements have been satisfied, the applicant company will become a full member and be able to use the DHF logo, be displayed on the DHF website and utilise the many benefits available to members.

“As an organisation, DHF is renowned for its rigorous processes in allowing new members into the federation, and following a recent surge in membership numbers, we are determined to maintain that positive reputation,” explains Commercial Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.  “We are understandably delighted by the swell in membership but determined that ‘quality’ should not be compromised in any way by ‘quantity’.  Being a member of DHF means something.  Safety, compliance and legal responsibility lie at the very heart of what we do, so it is essential that we continue to retain the very high standards for which we are recognised across the industry.  It is vital that both new – and existing – members adhere to the principles and values of the association in meeting these requirements.
“So far, the new processes have received the full backing and encouragement of our current members and those wishing to join DHF.  Going forward, we will also be increasing the number of company compliance assessments carried out on existing members.  DHF’s strapline is Raising Standards, Safety Assured, and these new measures demonstrate our continuing commitment to this benchmark.”

Yale Revolution Window Hinge achieves EPD certification

Yale Door and Window Solutions has achieved a product-specific Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification for its Revolution Window Hinge.

The globally recognised declaration provides environmental information on the Yale Revolution Window Hinge and the materials used to make it. It also details the manufacturing processes involved, including the environmental implications of the raw material used, energy efficiency, transportation impact, and waste generation.

The EPD highlights Yale’s commitment to sustainability and can help contribute to LEED and BREEAM compliance – a key consideration when fitting out new buildings.

Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director for Yale Door and Window Solutions, comments:
"This latest EPD certification is a key part of our commitment to providing customers with a range of sustainable products.
“The Revolution hinge already offers class-leading functionality and quality, so the addition of an EPD positions the product as both an industry and environmental leader."
Thanks to its unique patented dual closing function, the hinge can be switched after installation between anti-blowback and easy close functions depending on specification and housing requirements.  Onsite configuration allows for increased flexibility across housing portfolios with multiple building types and also helps reduce time and costs associated with returns or contractors carrying high levels of stock.

The hinge is available in 27 sizes, ensuring a truly comprehensive range that can accommodate sash heights ranging from 300 mm to 1,780 and can form part of a PAS 24 window set. It is also fully BBA certified, made in the UK and compatible with all three main window types; PVCu, timber and aluminium.

For more information on the Yale Revolution Window Hinge, and to see the rest of the Yale Door and Window Solutions range, visit www.yaledws.co.uk.

New Flame-Retardant Membrane for the Construction Market

Walki's flame-retardant membrane Walki®Wall Tight FR G A2 has
undergone  extensive testing and has been proven non-combustible.

Walki is launching a new flame-retardant membrane. Walki®Wall Tight FR G A2 is a unique vapour barrier that ensures fire safety for construction assets and people in case of rescue or evacuation operations.
“We identified the need for a more flame-retardant material a few years ago. Then the terrible fire accident at the Grenfell tower happened in the UK, and fire regulations were intensified”, says Pierrick Girard, Business Line Manager, Construction Membranes at Walki.
The building regulations amended by the UK government, that came into force in December 2018, bans the use of combustible materials in the external wall of buildings. The construction of the external wall, along with specified attachments, must be investigated by the Local Council Building Control and, where necessary, work must be carried out to ensure they only contain materials achieving European Class A2-s1, d0, i.e. it must be non-combustible.
“The Walki®Wall Tight FR G A2 underwent extensive testing in December this year, and received Euroclass A2-s1-d0 standard. In other words, the membrane has been proven non-combustible”, says Girard.
The Walki®Wall Tight FR G A2 can be used in walls and ceiling as a construction membrane, preventing heat radiation and moisture transfer.

As the Walki®Wall Tight FR G A2 is non-combustible, it is ideal as an internal vapour barrier in public buildings such as schools, hospitals, shopping centres and restaurants.
“In warmer places, such as Dubai, the vapour barrier can be used externally as protective sheathing in high rise buildings”, says Girard.
Walki has worked on developing the product for over two years. The membrane is based on lacquered aluminum layers laminated with strong glass fabric, attached together with a special flame-retardant glue.
“Both aluminum and glass fibre are non-combustible, ensuring that the vapour barrier has a good fire resistance. This solution is also cost-efficient compared to other options on the market”, says Girard.
Walki is attended the BAU fair in Munich in January, and competed for the Innovation Award Architecture + Building with the Wall Tight FR G A2 membrane.

The membrane is available now, primarily for the UK markets, but will of course be available for other countries as well in due course.

For more information please contact:

Pierrick Girard, Business Line Manager, Construction Membranes on +33 472 688 854 or by email pierrick.girard@walki.com

Walki Group is a leading producer of technical laminates and protective packaging materials, specialising in the production of fibre based, intelligent, multilaminate products for markets ranging from energy saving construction facings and construction membranes to barrier packaging applications. The Group has plants in Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK, Russia and China with a workforce of about 950 people. Annual net sales for the Group are over 318 million Euros.

Jewers Open the Doors to the Qatar 2022 World Cup

Jewers Doors’ local reseller; Rumaillah Warehouse Equipment WLL, have recently completed the installation of 30 sets of Swift-SEW automatic bi-folding doors for the new Lusail Light Rail Transit (LRT) depot complex in Qatar.

Lusail LRT is currently under construction as part of an urban development project north of Doha, the capital of Qatar. The €2bn design-build scheme is expected to open in 2020 and will provide an efficient transportation system for the people living in, and commuting to the new Lusail City, where the new 80,000 seat Lusail Stadium will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final.

Working closely alongside Rumaillah, Jewers started design works with QDVC-Alstom consortium in 2012, eventually winning the order in 2017 and shipping the doors from its UK manufacturing base in early 2018.

The thirty sets of 6.45m high electrically operated Swift-SEW doors were installed on three depot buildings. Six sets are on the Service Station, which incorporates the wash bay, twelve sets within the Maintenance Building and a further twelve sets on the Stabling Depot, which houses the trams when they are not on the dusty streets of Qatar.

Individual doors automatically open and close as a tram slowly passes through a sequence of photo-beams on either side of the door opening. These beams also act as safety devices to prevent the doors closing until the tram has fully cleared all beams, and together with full height safety edges provide ultimate safety for trams and personnel alike.

Each Swift-SEW door comprises four highly insulated, steel composite panels, which are hinged to the jambs with two leaves folding to each side clear of the opening.

Door leaves are finished in a special ‘cool finish’ coating to reduce heat absorption through the door, and are fitted with multi-wall EPDM rubber seals to all edges to reduce, air and dust and water ingress.

The combination of finish, high density insulation help to keep the blistering heat out, and maintain the cooler conditions within the depot buildings.

Doors are operated by a powerful, centrally mounted SEW drive unit, combined with a purpose designed PLC control panel incorporating inverter control for smooth operation.

Opening time is under eight seconds, and in the event of power failure, a low-level disengage handle enables the doors to be instantly opened from ground level.

Eighteen of the doors are fitted with wicket doors, allowing authorised personnel to easily and safely pass through the opening without the need to open the main doors.

For visibility and natural light, all door leaves are fitted with a 600 x 600mm argon filled, toughened glass, double glazed vision panel,

A high level 850mm x 760mm cut-out allows the door to safely close around the overhead line equipment (OLE). This cut-out is lined with a dielectrically rated rubber sheet tested to 30kVA, which is design to prevent bird entry and reduce dust ingress. As standard, the door is earthed back to the structure with suitably rated earth bonding braids.

Jewers’ Regional Sales Manager; Ben Pritchard commented:
“Jewers Doors have been approved for installation by many agencies in the Middle East. Our doors not only meet the high standards specified for major infrastructure projects, but the current exchange rate means Jewers offer excellent value. With our office in Dubai and locally based resellers in each GCC country, Jewers are ideally placed to provide a world class service throughout the Middle East.”

Spicing up 50 Years of The Ford Capri

The world’s most successful Capri racer will lead the celebrations honouring the Ford fastback’s golden anniversary at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (26-28 July).

For five seasons in succession between 1976 and 1980, Gordon Spice took top class honours in the British Saloon Car Championship, taking the Mustang-inspired coupé to no fewer than 24 outright race victories.

With the Capri turning 50 this year, the tin-top racing legend will present a special trophy to the top-performing Capri in the crowd-pleasing Historic Touring Car Challenge (HTCC) race at the Classic.
“The Capri was very important to me,” reflected Spice, who further proved his talent by lifting the Group C2 World Endurance Championship crown when racing a sports prototype produced and entered by his own Spice Engineering company.
“The Capri was by far the easiest car I ever raced. There was absolutely nothing complicated about it – the rear-drive chassis was simple to tune, so it handled really, really well. Just a brilliant motor car.”

First unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1969 and marketed by Ford as ‘The Car You Always Promised Yourself’, close to two million Capris were produced before the model’s demise at the end of 1986.

As well as finding huge favour in the showrooms, Capris were popular in motor sport – notably in Britain where they totally ruled the country’s premier touring car series after the bigger-engined American muscle cars were banned at the end of the 1975 season.

Despite facing fierce competition – mostly from rival three-litre Capris – Spice was very much the man to beat for the following five years, right up to the moment a subsequent rule change permitted the introduction of the larger-engined Rover Vitesses, thus ending the Ford’s domination.

Today’s flourishing HTCC features large numbers of Capris –including some actually raced by Spice in period – Rovers and other iconic saloon cars from that much-loved era, many adding to the memories by still competing in evocative period liveries.

Providing further spectacle, for the first time this year’s grid at the Classic will also permit official entries from a number of later-generation, flame-spitting Ford Cosworth RS500s.

In the past, the high-performance Sierras have raced regularly with the Super Touring field. However, due to diminishing number of cars competing in this grid and an already packed track schedule, the super tourers will be taking a break from the Classic this year.

Appropriately, though, the coveted one-off Gordon Spice Trophy will be presented by Spice to the first Capri past the finishing post.
“I’m absolutely delighted to have been given this honour,” said Spice, now aged 78. “I never miss the Classic; it’s one of my favourite race meetings of the year and it is always wonderful to see so many Capris still racing today – 50 years is a long time!”

To mark the occasion, organisers have also confirmed that they will be holding a celebratory anniversary parade for the Ford Capri on the Sunday of the event for those car club members joining in the festivities with their Ford Capris. This will be fronted by the last Capri to roll off the production line in Cologne – a limited edition 280 ‘Brooklands’ model owned by Ford’s heritage workshop.

Visitors keen to relive the heyday of seventies saloon car racing – as well as savouring all the other numerous on- and off-track attractions at the Classic – must buy their tickets in advance. All those purchasing before the end of March can take advantage of a money-saving Early Bird offer.

All tickets grant access to trackside grandstands, live music concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings, both racing paddocks plus the vast majority of the fun-fuelled family entertainment on offer at the ‘rocking and racing’ Classic.

Full details on general admission tickets, car club display packages, hospitality experiences and camping options – as well as all the latest Classic news – can be found at silverstoneclassic.com.

UK Homes Revealed Unsecure as Alarming Survey Shows nearly half have no Security

A new public survey conducted by security retailer All About Safes has discovered that nearly half of UK homes have no security measures or systems in place.

The ratio of crimes being committed to crimes being resolved has fallen to record lows, all while theft and burglary rates continue to climb. 2018 saw a 5% resolution rate on burglaries, lower than the 10% rate recorded in 2017.

In light of this domestic security crisis, All About Safes ran a public poll, asking the British people about what kinds of security methods they use to protect their property. Gathering data from 935 respondents, they discovered that 44% of homes have no security at all.

The survey reveals striking vulnerabilities in domestic property safety. As the number of officers working law enforcement dips to figures of those last seen during 1970s austerity, many people are failing to adapt to increasing personal security demands.
“We’ve seen dramatic increases in domestic property break-ins, while fewer crimes are being solved each year,” comments security expert Dean Ryan from All About Safes. “The British public need to start taking their home security seriously. Personal responsibility is becoming a real factor in the safety and retention of valuables.”

For those who do have security, the survey revealed that:

- 26% of homes have alarm systems
- 22% of domestic properties are protected by security lights
- 22% also own a dog they consider a security asset
- 17% of people use CCTV cameras or video monitoring
- 11% of properties are now equipped with smart security tech
- 9% secure their valuables within a safe.
“Our research shows that just 3% of British homes have extensive security coverage, including alarms, security lighting, safes and video monitoring,” Dean Ryan added. “Many domestic properties are not prepared for rising threats of home invasion and burglary. With the average burglary incurring costs of £2,800 worth of damage and theft, bolstering security really is the smart decision.”
