Abloy UK launches new Escape Door System compliant with BS EN 13637

The new ASSA ABLOY ePED, available from Abloy UK, is a display door terminal that incorporates an Escape Door System with a sleek, stylish design for a modern building.

Traditionally, escape door systems had to be compliant to BS EN 179 and BS EN 1125, but the introduction of BS EN 13637 in 2015 changed the landscape of how emergency doors can be specified, defining the requirements for electrically controlled exit systems for use on escape routes.

Previously, escape hardware for doors would only allow egress from one side, but now there is the opportunity to have a read-in and read-out option on an escape route.

The electrically controlled Panic Exit Device (ePED) from Abloy features read-in and read-out to improve a buildings security and safety. The latest BS EN 13637 standard allows Dynamic Lockdown whereby the door can be secured to prevent people entering a building but allowing egress. This controls movement around the building and keeps people safe in hostile situations.

ePED is a sleek touch-screen door terminal. It’s reliable and secure with versatile functions housed in a stylish control unit that is suitable for a wide range of applications including, Commercial Buildings, Public Buildings, Event Venues, Retail Outlets, Nurseries, Hospitals and Care Homes.

It’s a unique system because the terminal offers everything a traditional escape route terminal offers, plus central time delay. When an emergency button is pressed there is an opportunity for security staff or teaching staff in a school setting to intervene if the system is being misused. T1 and T2 time delay options are available.

The ePED integrates a conventional escape door terminal in a single unit, replacing four modules: key switch, emergency opening, illuminated images and time delay display. ePED is applicable in three varying designs; the unit can be integrated with a Panic touch bar or fitted as a standalone display door terminal or as a door terminal.

The unit displays icon buttons that are simple, effective and aesthetically pleasing. The display has an outside illuminated ring that provides valuable information on the current status of the door, it also allows authorised users to configure the unit via a pin code on the device.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, added:
“The ePED is the next generation of escape door terminals. As well as offering more features, such as timed delayed access and read-in and out, it has an attractive appearance that makes it suitable to install even in the most stylish buildings. Our customers now have a compliant solution that will look sleek and professional in every sector and will integrate easily into current systems.”

To find out more about ePED or other products and services available from Abloy UK, visit our website www.abloy.co.uk, call 01902 364 500, or email info@abloy.co.uk.

From the ever-popular satin stainless steel to glamorous polished copper, there is a Boss overhead closer option to suit any design scheme or door hardware suite.

Boss offers a range of twenty finishes and colours as standard, but can offer closers in any RAL colour in a high quality paint finish or bespoke finish if necessary.

Closers in twenty finishes are available from stock for next day delivery.

Satin stainless steel still remains the most common choice for overhead closers but in recent years bronze has made a strong showing. P C Henderson’s Sliding Door Hardware Specified for Luxury Hotel in Shanghai's NECC

P C Henderson’s sliding door hardware has recently been specified for a luxury hotel built within Shanghai’s new National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC) in China.

Built in 2019, the Intercontinental Shanghai Hongqiao NECC features 536 rooms across 10 floors and is the only hotel to be located within the NECC. The hotel boasts many luxurious features including a fitness spa and wellness centre, a grand ballroom and a signature restaurant which offers an array of international cuisines.

The design brief required a sliding door system for each of the 536 rooms to create a partition wall between the bathroom and bedroom. A range of P C Henderson’s sliding door hardware systems were specified for the project including 504 Husky Sliding systems for the standard guest bedrooms and 85 Husky Telescopic systems for the hotels executive rooms.

Julius Zhu, Sales Development Manager for P C Henderson China, commented:
“We are seeing an increased demand for sliding door systems within the luxury hotel market as a way to create two separate rooms when privacy is required whilst also allowing a large open plan space when open. Space is often a priority within large hotel complexes and so sliding doors are a great way to achieve flexible room layouts without imposing on the space available”.

A sliding door system was also required for the hotel’s lobby to separate the reception desk and lounge area.
“The timber doors were designed with a copper decoration to enhance the luxurious feel within the hotel and therefore required a sliding door system which could comfortably cater for a significant door weight without impacting the operation of the system”, explained Julius.

The company's Straight Sliding 301 industrial hardware was identified as the ideal system for this part of the project. Catering for doors weighing up to 400kg, the system can comfortably accommodate the weight of the timber doors whilst ensuring a smooth and quiet operation.

P C Henderson’s range of sliding door hardware is becoming increasing popular within the international hotel market due to an increase in demand for flexible living areas for guests. The company’s range of hardware can cater for doors weighing up to 8000kg meaning virtually any type of sliding door hardware can be catered for.

Modern door design innovators Urban Front renew membership with SBD

A married couple who run a business designing and manufacturing high-end, contemporary hardwood and steel reinforced doors for customers in the UK and around the world, have renewed their membership with Secured by Design (SBD), the official police security initiative.

Urban Front founders, Nabil and Elizabeth Assaf, who are based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, have carved out a reputation over the last 15 years as innovators and leaders in modern door design.

Their passion for their craft comes across not only when they speak to customers in person but also in their personalised range of video clips on their website which they present to provide an informative, practical and entertaining glimpse inside their ‘inspired world’ of custom-made doors.

They describe how the company started, how they ensure doors become ‘works of art’ and explain everything that customers need to know to choose the door that’s right for them.

The videos are in a section of their website aptly called ‘Inspiration and Advice’ and includes a picture gallery of more than 50 front, internal and garage doors that have been ordered, bespoke designed, hand-crafted and delivered across the globe.

Nabil said: “There is something to be said about creating entrances that can distinguish one building from another and determine an identity that lasts for a lifetime.”

Elizabeth added: “It’s not every day that you buy a front door. It’s one of those big decisions you make for your house and it can impact your lifestyle just as much.”

Supplying to the domestic and commercial marketplaces, Urban Front provides unique designs and a wide range of finishing options suitable for older more traditional buildings as well as doors in the latest contemporary styles.

The company has an E80S hinged security doorset that has been accredited by Secured by Design for its robust qualities to deter and reduce crime. It has been successfully tested and certified to LPS 1175 Issue 7.2 SR2 requirements.

The company states it is proud to be SBD accredited. “In a nutshell, this means we care about your front door security as much as we do about making it look good,” the couple state.

Nabil, who used to work in foreign exchange and private banking, and Elizabeth, who was a TV researcher and assistant producer, quit their professional careers in London to bring together their creative talents to launch Urban Front in 2005 after they built their first front door in the back garden of their home in Hertfordshire with cedar purchased from a yard in nearby Watford.

That door proved to be a turning point in their lives. Having quit their jobs, they attended college for a year to study product design and interior design and proceeded to work closely with manufacturers and test houses to learn about quality control and the challenges of manufacturing in hardwood and keeping it stable from splitting or degrading.

Today, Urban Front supplies to high-end residential and commercial markets in the UK and around the world, such as to Europe and the USA and Canada.

SBD Development Officer, Ruari Robertson, said:
“Urban Front is clearly a very fast-moving, exciting and innovative company that take care and pride in producing the very best products for their customers.
“We are delighted that they have renewed their membership with Secured by Design and we look forward to working with them in the years ahead.”

Motorsport at Goodwood roars back in 2021

Goodwood is delighted to announce that its three flagship motorsport events - the 78th Members’ Meeting, the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, and the Revival - will be returning in 2021. Even more excitingly, the vital element so very much missed in 2020 – the fans – will be welcomed back to the Goodwood Estate.

First away from the grid will be the 78th Members’ Meeting, postponed from March 2020, which will now be held on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 May 2021. An action-packed weekend of motor racing exclusively for members and fellows of the Goodwood Road Racing Club (GRRC) and their guests, Members’ Meeting recaptures the intimacy and camaraderie of the members-only race weekends held in Goodwood’s heyday.

Having looked at the 2021 Goodwood event season as a whole, as well as other key motorsport events, Goodwood took the decision to move the 78th Members’ Meeting from April to May. Holding the Members' Meeting in May will allow Goodwood to run an unmissable event and give the team enough time to plan a special and safe experience for its customers.

The weekend will be packed with exciting action, including popular races like the S.F. Edge Trophy for Edwardian era monsters and the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 touring cars from 1970-81. The rally and many of the races that were originally planned for 2020 will go ahead, with two additional special demonstrations, star cars and drivers to be announced in the New Year.

Event dates:
  • 78th Members’ Meeting: Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th May 2021
  • Festival of Speed: Thursday 8th – Sunday 11th July 2021
  • Goodwood Revival: Friday 17th – Sunday 19th September 2021
July of course means the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, the world’s greatest celebration of motorsport, motoring and technology, which will take place on 8-11 July 2021. In 2019 the sell-out Festival of Speed last welcomed guests from around the world to watch the most exciting, important and desirable cars of all eras roar past Goodwood House as they tackled the famous 1.16-mile Hill.

Next year the Festival of Speed will return better than ever, providing the stage to celebrate 2020’s planned theme of ‘The Maestros - Motorsport’s Great All-Rounders’, featuring drivers, teams and manufacturers who have shown their true greatness by succeeding across a variety of motorsport disciplines.

One very special Maestro, who has already confirmed his attendance, after the pandemic stopped him visiting Goodwood in 2020, is legendary American racer Mario Andretti.
Mario said: “Goodwood in July sounds wonderful to me right now.  I welcome the invitation and look forward to being there for the third time.  It is truly one of the most fan-friendly motorsports events.  A very unique jewel.  There is simply nothing like it on the planet.”
Cars and bikes from all the major motorsport categories, plus the very latest supercars and brand new road cars will head back to the world-renowned event, featuring in a variety of celebrations, details of which will be announced over the coming weeks and months. And following the huge popularity of the Driftkhana competition at Goodwood Speedweek presented by Mastercard, the howling, sliding, over-the-top drifters are planned to be back in action once more.

Cutting edge technology remains at the forefront of the Festival of Speed, and never will that have been more appropriate than in 2021. The Festival of Speed Future Lab will showcase more awe-inspiring and thought-provoking exhibits and interactive zones than ever before, as Goodwood explores the future of mobility and brings it to life for viewers in person and online.

Finally, closing what Goodwood anticipates will be an incredible season of events, will be the much-loved Goodwood Revival on 17-19 September, which recreates the golden age of the Goodwood Motor Circuit between 1948 and 1966, when legends such as Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart regularly battled it out on the stunning and spectacular track.

Much more than just a recreation of the past, the Revival celebrates the timeless ethos of ‘repair and re-use’, promoting a spirit of sustainability which is more relevant now than ever. Expect to see some of the most beautiful and valuable cars of all time in genuine, no-quarter-given racing in favourites such as the RAC TT Celebration, and the newly-renamed Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy.

2021 event dates & tickets

Tickets to the 78th Members’ Meeting, Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival go on sale to the public on Monday 1st February 2021 at goodwood.com

All the events will be run strictly in accordance with the Government’s Covid-19 guidelines on social distancing in place at the time. Goodwood’s number one priority is the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved, whether working behind-the-scenes, at the wheel, or attending the spectacle. Plans for ensuring this, while still maintaining the atmosphere and excitement that characterises Goodwood’s events, are well advanced and spectators will find even more to enjoy in 2021.

Such is the affection of motorsport fans towards Goodwood’s events that many elected to carry their 2020 tickets forward to 2021. This means that tickets, which go on sale to the public in February, will be strictly limited.

Members and fellows of the GRRC will receive pre-sale access up to two weeks earlier. The Fellowship is open and welcoming new members, all of whom will receive early access to all event tickets as well as a host of other year-round digital and in-person benefits from Goodwood and its partners.

Anyone with tickets for 2020 events who can no longer attend next year’s rescheduled dates should contact the Goodwood Ticket Office via ticketoffice@goodwood.com, by 31st December 2020.

Looking forward to welcoming fans back to Goodwood next year, the Duke of Richmond said:
“More than anything else it is the people who make our events so special; the drivers, the teams, our staff and above all the fans. We were incredibly disappointed not to be able to welcome them to our much-loved events in 2020. Now we are thrilled to be able to announce that all three motorsport events are planned to be back next year. Thank you to all our loyal followers who either rolled over their tickets or joined the Goodwood Supporters’ Association, which helped us immeasurably in a very tough year. We absolutely cannot wait to see them and plenty of new fans in 2021.
“Our huge, global audience is as important to us as the people making the journey to West Sussex and so for anyone unable to attend, Goodwood Road & Racing will be broadcasting all the events on its website and social channels. Following the incredibly successful digital-first Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard, our digital audiences can expect to see more action in more formats as well as some new and innovative interactive features to make it feel like they are here in person”.

DHF guides its members on CE marking changes from 1 January 2021

DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) has hosted a series of webinars and produced briefing papers for its membership in relation to UKCA marking and what they need to consider from 1 January 2021.

After 31 December 2021, CE marking will no longer be recognised in the UK and UKCA will be the only recognised conformity mark for the UK market.  UKCA marking will not be recognised in the EU 27 nor in Northern Ireland.

The new UKCA marking will apply to goods placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland), replacing the existing CE mark.  It will relate to goods that are currently required to carry the CE mark, such as construction products and machinery.  UKCA marking will be recognised in the UK from 1 January 2020, following the end of the current transition period.  Provided that organisations retain the necessary testing and/or certification, they will be able to continue applying the CE mark after this date.  Indeed, applying both marks is permissible, provided they are kept separate.

Throughout November, DHF hosted a four-part webinar series highlighting the pertinent aspects of the changes. The four webinars covered such topics as: moving goods from the EU 27 to the UK, placing goods manufactures in the UK on the UK market, moving goods from the UK to Northern Ireland, and goods manufactures in Northern Ireland.  The pro-active trade association has also produced a series of briefing papers, setting out the details of the new UKCA requirements, all of which are available to download from the DHF website: www.dhfonline.org.uk

Michael Skelding, DHF’s General Manager and Secretary stated,
“The five guidance documents - based on information released by the UK government – have been created to explain exactly who is responsible for which element of the process in an easy-to-read format and cover moving goods from the UK to the EU 27, moving goods from the EU 27 to the UK, placing goods manufactured in the UK on the UK market, moving goods from the UK to Northern Ireland, and goods manufactured in Northern Ireland.”
He continued, “This information is subject to change, for example, the possibility may still exist of a mutual recognition agreement (MRA) which could permit certification from EU bodies to be recognised for UKCA marking purposes, and certification from UK bodies to be recognised for CE marking purposes.  In the absence of such an agreement, UK certification will cease to be valid for CE marking after 31 December 2020, meaning that any manufacturers reliant on such certification will have to switch to UKCA marking on 1 January 2021.
“The  webinars have been extremely well-received and we are delighted to be able to guide our members on what they need to be looking out for when it comes to CE and new UKCA marking rules and regulations come the new year,” he added.  “These webinars, together with our guidance documents, should deliver a good overview of a complex subject, and we will, of course, keep our members updated should changes occur.”

DHF represents all the key players in the following sectors: locks and building hardware, doorsets, industrial doors and shutters, domestic garage doors and automated gates.

With the ultimate aim of maintaining and raising quality standards throughout the industry, all DHF members must meet minimum standards of competence and customer service. They all operate within a Code of Conduct governing standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety, business integrity and CE marking compliance.

Are you ready for the new UKCA mark?

Yale is urging fabricators and installers to ensure they are ready for the new UKCA mark, which is replacing CE marking for products sold in Great Britain. This includes products such as fire-resistant and emergency locks, panic exit devices and door closers.

The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is the new product marking system that will be used for goods being placed on the market in Great Britain. It covers most goods that previously required the CE marking.

From 1 January 2021, all new products launched in Great Britain must be UKCA marked, with the CE mark no longer being recognised in the UK from 1 January 2022. For existing CE marked products, there will be a ‘coexistence’ period until 31st December 2021, where these goods can continue to be sold in Great Britain until then.

During this timeframe, it is expected that manufacturers will take steps to ensure existing CE marked products will have the UKCA mark applied in time for 1 January 2022, when the CE mark will cease to be recognised in the UK.

UKCA marking must be undertaken by a UK-recognised ‘approved body’. An EU notified body, which would previously have been called upon for CE marking, cannot  be used for UKCA marking.

To meet this need, Yale is already taking measures to ensure all the relevant UK product marking deadlines are met. The company is ensuring all of its new products launched into Great Britain from 1 January 2021 will be certified using a UK approved body and have the UKCA mark applied. Then, for its range of existing CE marked products, Yale is already progressing UKCA marking for these solutions too, ensuring they are properly certified in time for the 1 January 2022 deadline.

All relevant documents, such as labels, product packaging, marketing materials and instruction manuals, are being updated accordingly as well.

It’s important to note that products being sold in Northern Ireland will be subject to a different set of criteria, covering UKNI and CE marking under the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director for Yale, said:
“Keeping up to date with the new rules and regulations surrounding the UKCA mark, and the deadlines when CE marking will no longer apply for products sold into Great Britain, can be a lot for fabricators and installers to get their heads around. As such, we want to reassure our customers that they can have every confidence that our products will be properly certified to the appropriate UK product marking standards, meeting the fast-approaching UKCA and UKNI deadlines.

“Nevertheless, it is everyone’s responsibility throughout the supply chain to ensure that properly certified products are specified. As such, we would urge our customers to make sure they do have a solid understanding of what the correct product marking entails and the timescales that are being worked towards. It is vital that security products and door opening solutions with the appropriate product marking are being specified and installed.

“If you do have any questions or concerns surrounding the new UK product marking, then please don’t hesitate to contact us and we will be more than happy to go over these with you.”

Squire achieves BSI Secure Digital Applications Kitemark™ for Inigma operating system in padlocks, cylinders and bike locks

British security manufacturer Squire has achieved the Secure Digital Applications Kitemark for its Inigma operating system in bike locks, padlocks and cylinders.

In addition, Squire is the first organisation to achieve the BSI Internet of Things Kitemark for a bike lock.

Achieving the Secure Digital Applications Kitemark is proof that Squire’s Inigma system is a secure digital operating system for controlling padlocks, cylinders and bike locks via smartphone and Bluetooth connection.

For padlocks and cylinders, the advanced Inigma access control system works by connecting smart locks to a secure cloud server via a mobile network and a clever smartkey. It provides convenient, secure access control for remote locations, from just one user to many thousands of users - from offices, substations, mobile and modular buildings, data storage cabinets, electricity panels, student accommodation to healthcare facilities and medical cabinets.

Just one key can open over 10,000 locks, and it can record over 10,000 locks visited.

Certification to the BSI Kitemark for Internet of Things (Residential) has been achieved for Squire’s Inigma range of cycle security products - BL1 D-lock, FL1 folding lock and IC1 integrated lock and chain set.

The Kitemark certification scheme for the IoT was developed in response to the rapid growth of internet connected products. It provides a quick and easy way for consumers to identify IoT devices they can trust to be safe, secure and functional.

Squire’s BL1, FL1 and IC1 smart cycle locks work by using the same smartphone and Bluetooth connection. They allow cyclists to lock and unlock their bike via the Inigma app download, which is available on the App Store or Google Play.

There are no keys to lose or combinations to forget, making it convenient and flexible. Whilst other features include sharing the lock with friends and opening at set times and dates.

CEO John Squire said:
“Achieving the BSI Kitemark certification is testament to both the hard work and investment made in Squire’s Inigma system to ensure the function and security are of the highest standard for customers.
“Our Inigma digital technology is designed by us to take lock security to the very highest level. That’s why we’re proud to achieve the BSI Kitemark which reflects our premium brand status for ‘toughness guaranteed.”

The famous Kitemark symbol is widely recognised all over the world as a mark of trust. It requires rigorous testing and assessment for it to be achieved by companies that meet these international benchmarks.

After more than 100-years, BSI Kitemark certification continues to be the beacon of quality, performance and safety to both consumers and businesses buying everything from fire extinguishers to secure digital devices.

David Mudd, Global Digital Product Certification Director at BSI, said:
“In achieving the Kitemark for the IoT for its Inigma range of cycle locks, Squire has shown to its customers that it has adopted the latest connected technologies to improve their user experience responsibly and effectively. Customers can use these smart locks with the confidence that the appropriate cybersecurity controls are in place and will be through their intended life, which is a great “first” for the bike lock industry.
“Additionally, by achieving the Secure Digital Applications Kitemark, Squire has demonstrated that its Inigma digital operating system, used for controlling bike locks, padlocks and cylinders, has been designed with security as a prime consideration with effective cybersecurity controls embedded throughout. These achievements show how Squire continues to be at the forefront of lock making in the digital age.”

The Squire name has been at the forefront of lock making since 1780, with a Great British history carried down through eight generations.

Today, Squire is recognised for some of the technologically advanced products in lock making for home, commercial, motorcycle and cycle security - cylinders, padlocks, combination locks, multi-purpose lock and chain sets, security cables, bolts, hasps and staples, and security accessories.
