Burlen and J40 Motor Company open new site at Bicester Heritage

Burlen, the world’s sole manufacturer of genuine Skinners Union (SU), Amal, and Zenith Carburettor brands, and owners of the J40 Motor Company, announces a new brand centre at Bicester Heritage located in Building 87 on the Western Avenue, also known as the Old Fire Party House.

A unique ‘motoring marina’ setting, Bicester Heritage is now home to 45 specialist automotive businesses across a beautiful 444-acre former WW2 RAF Bomber Training Station, the site now being held as a national exemplar of constructive conservation by Historic England since being founded in 2013.

The location has the vision to provide a vibrant future for classic motoring, through the provision of apprenticeship schemes, celebrating the historic motoring sector through engagement and interaction, an ethos that perfectly aligns with that of Burlen.

While all carburetters and associated parts will continue to be manufactured in Salisbury, as well as those of the J40 Motor Company, the Bicester Heritage site will be used as a brand showcase centre and entertaining area, both regularly open to visitors.

Burlen at Bicester will showcase a range of products from Amal, SU and Zenith carburetters, along with curated items from each brands history.  A number of classic display vehicles will also be on-site including the famous Burlen racing Minis, classic American hotrods and a variety of classic cars.

In the near future, a range of carburetters, parts and accessories will be on sale to Bicester Heritage specialists and site visitors alike.

The J40 Motor Company will also call Bicester Heritage its home, with a permanent display of Austin J40 pedal cars, spares, and accessories available to view and purchase.

Burlen will also create a relaxing lounge area designed to suit the style of the architecture of Bicester Heritage while showcasing the history of the Burlen brands through historical artefacts, products, technical drawings, and material from the company archives.

Doors open at Burlen for the October 10th Scramble and the team looks forward to meeting guests and enthusiasts at their first event as residents, with a request that visitors appreciate the building will not yet be fully operational.

Mark Burnett, Burlen’s Managing Director, said: “Burlen has served the classic vehicle community for many years, and looks forward to becoming a part of the community at Bicester Heritage. We are proud to work alongside the experts, specialists and talent residing on-site and feel we perfectly align with the experiences and services guests to the site have become accustomed to. While we won’t be fully open in time for the October Scramble, we will be on-site, with open doors, ready to greet enthusiasts and share our vision for the future.”

Dan Geoghegan, CEO, Bicester Heritage adds: “Despite the humble carburettor no longer taking centre stage in the contemporary motoring industry, it remains a key component for classics. It’s a pleasure to have another family-focused business join us, and we look forward to seeing their collection at our upcoming Scramble event.”

A number of unique Burlen events, opportunities and experiences will soon launch at Bicester Heritage, with more details to follow.

DHF supports newly-launched Code for Construction Product information pack

DHF, a member of Construction Products Association (CPA), is pleased to voice its support for the upcoming Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI). CPA has just launched  the Code in a bid to drive higher standards in the presentation of construction product information in the manufacturing industry.

The new Code, viewed by DHF as an important part of the many initiatives emanating from the Grenfell Tower enquiry, promotes urgent positive culture and behavioural change in the approach and management of product information by the construction product manufacturing industry.

It offers manufacturers the opportunity to demonstrate a progressive approach through their willingness to provide assurance for their product information, and recognition for their efforts to prioritise product safety.

The Code has eleven clauses covering critical aspects from responsibility for product information to transparency of information regarding performance, proof of stated claims and general information and competency. In support of the Code, CPA has issued guidance and a ‘Preparing for the Code’ information pack to aid members of the manufacturing industry with the transition.

“The issue of the ‘Code for Construction Product Information’ (CCPI) has been frequently raised at DHF meetings, and therefore, we are very pleased that this initiative has now been published,” explains DHF’s General Manager, Michael Skelding.

The Code aims to ensure that unscrupulous marketing practices and the provision of misleading product information becomes a ‘thing of the past’, and that those using products in the construction and maintenance of buildings – for example, specifiers, architects, consultants and contractors, as well as the ultimate end users of the building – can trust the information provided by manufacturers when making design decisions, installing and using and maintaining verified products.

Manufacturers of construction products who choose to sign up to the Code are agreeing to abide by its clauses to give confidence to those in the supply chain using their product information, that it is clear, accurate, up-to-date, accessible, and unambiguous.

“This is definitely a ‘step in the right direction’ in moving away from inaccurate product information being presented to customers, architect and specifiers and instilling integrity back into the industry,” continues Michael.   “This initiative complements our long-standing advocacy of third-party certification for fire-resisting doorsets.  In practice, it will be much easier to comply with CCPI if the products concerned are certified.”

Further information about the Code can be accessed here: www.cpicode.org.uk or to register interest visit www.cpicode.org.uk/register-interest

Two PDF downloads are also available one covering general information and the other covering guidance.

DHF represents all the key players in the following sectors: locks and building hardware, doorsets, industrial doors and shutters, domestic garage doors and automated gates.

With the ultimate aim of maintaining and raising quality standards throughout the industry, all DHF members must meet minimum standards of competence and customer service. They all operate within a Code of Conduct governing standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety, business integrity and CE marking compliance.

Sign In App introduces critical features within Safety+ update including Shared Evacuations

Innovative visitor management app places health and safety at the forefront of developments

Sign In App, developer of the UK’s leading visitor management app, is pleased to launch Safety+, a vital addition to Sign In App’s solution that aims to revolutionise and improve health and safety within organisations.

Placing a focus on the existing fire evacuation systems and processes, the new update provides a huge benefit to organisations and fire marshals including reducing the time of roll calls and improving efficiency. Sign In App has always placed health and safety procedures at the heart of new feature releases and, with the launch of Safety+, Shared Evacuation reports empower multiple colleagues to work together at the same time for a more streamlined and safer system to ensure no one is left behind.

In 2019/2020, there were 286 fire-related fatalities in England and fire drills and evacuations remain an essential part of fire safety across many buildings from schools and universities to offices. Noticing a vital issue with many organisations still relying on old evacuation methods including pen and paper clipboard call-outs and inefficient methods of accounting for everyone leading to confusion, the need for a better evacuation process was evident.

Delays in evacuation roll calls whilst marshals ascertain who is on-site can cost lives. Sign In App has therefore made it a priority to further improve users’ health and safety with its latest update.

The new Safety+ update provides a more efficient and seamless method for keeping people safe in the event of an emergency. Using Shared Evacuations allows multiple people to complete a roll call at the same time on the Sign In App Companion mobile app.

This allows all appointed fire marshals to instantly view an entire list of who is on-site through a mobile device from anywhere and view those who have already been accounted for. The update is designed to reduce time wasted and lives endangered with the relief of responsibility on just one person, as was historically the case.

With a hybrid model becoming more popular and more staff working remotely than before, it’s vital to accurately record who is in the building should an emergency occur. Having these records means fire marshals are not searching for those who are not on-site and Sign In App makes it easy to track this with just a smartphone to bring a centralised and accurate reflection of who is in the building in real-time.

The new Shared Evacuations feature also enables integration with an existing Management Information System (MIS) used by many schools to show registration data and transfers this information into the Companion app so environments such as these, where not everyone on site uses Sign In App to sign in, can still access the evacuation reports.

Using the Companion app and this data, custom groups can be organised which can allow larger organisations to section individuals into different groups based on where the fire evacuation points are around the site.

This helps to make the process more organised by separating and easily being able to view the people in different areas. Fire marshals can be appointed to manage each group with access to the evacuation list to streamline the whole procedure and give full visibility to ensure those who have moved from one building to another are quickly and easily ticked off.

Through the app, all updates can be shared instantly between marshals allowing them to add and reply to comments as they happen. A timer will clearly show how long it takes to complete the roll call from the moment the alarm sounds for accurate records and reports to encourage improvements.

In the event that someone is unaccounted for in the roll call, Sign In App provides each fire marshal access to all visitor information captured on their arrival including their photo and information on who they were visiting which can be key to locating them as quickly as possible or ascertaining if they are in danger.

Dan Harding, CEO, Sign In App, explains:
“We take the health and safety of the users of Sign In App very seriously. The traditional and slower methods of evacuation roll calls was an aspect of organisations that we believe could be putting many at risk.
“Redesigning this to fit with the modern-day where everyone has mobile phones to hand could help not only improve the efficiency of the task but also save lives. Giving users the ability to have multiple people conducting a roll call in different areas of a building with our Safety+ update will improve this further and we hope to see the average time of fire drills decreasing and therefore the number of people at risk decreasing as no one is left behind.”

Mul-T-Lock encourages homeowners to ‘Love Your Locksmith’ in support of National Home Security Month

Security specialist Mul-T-Lock is proud to announce that it will be supporting this year’s National Home Security Month (NHSM), bringing attention to the importance of home security amongst consumers and driving business for local locksmiths across the UK.

The annual campaign, which this year is themed ‘Protect what matters most’, runs throughout October and works to offer advice, break down technical jargon, and debunk security myths for UK homeowners, all whilst helping to drive demand for security products and locksmith services nationwide.

Recent statistics have shown that around 92% of domestic burglaries are made via a door, with a forced lock and an unlocked door being the top two most common methods of door entry1

The most recent burglary report from the Office of National Statistics proves that there is much more to be done to educate consumers on home security, particularly when it comes to properly securing external doors of a property.

Experts at Mul-T-Lock are advising that to prevent unwanted access, homeowners should change locks every five years for added peace of mind, or as soon as possible after moving into a new home.

Highlighting the cost and time saving benefits, as well as the unrivalled advice homeowners can get from an approved locksmith’s extensive knowledge and experience, Mul-T-Lock is putting a big focus on consumers getting in touch with their local locksmith each time they want to change their locks.

Mul-T-Lock hopes to use the NHSM campaign to keep homeowners informed on the best security products and practices, and when it comes to choosing which door cylinder to opt for, Mul-T-Lock offers the original and the best. The brand is promoting its coveted Break Secure® 3DS anti-snap cylinder, specifically designed to help locksmiths meet consumer demand for high security locks.

Having excelled in recent tests, the Break Secure® 3DS has surpassed the British Standard Kitemark BS EN 1303:2015 test by over a million cycles, as well as meeting TS007 3-star standard and undergoing rigorous independent testing by the Master Locksmiths Association to meet the Sold Secure Diamond SS312 standard – offering the very best protection in lock security.

The Break Secure® 3DS cylinder offers three separate lines of defence, enabling locksmiths to offer customers an innovative solution with an unrivalled level of security that will deter even the most resolute intruder:
  1. A sacrificial end – designed to snap to protect against lock-snapping; the most common form of entry to a property
  2. Bump resistant – many cylinders can be easily ‘bumped’ (inserting and tapping an illegal key to release the cam and open the door), but the Break Secure® 3DS is proven to resist this
  3. Drill resistant – engineered using high strength material and robust construction to withstand prolonged drilling
In addition to these lines of defence, the Mul-T-Lock Break Secure® 3DS cylinder boasts anti-screw and anti-pick protection, with the key or thumb turn still operational internally, even after the cylinder has been attacked.

The brand also offers a one keyed house solution encompassing the Break Secure® 3DS cylinder, with patented keys that only Mul-T-Lock Approved Locksmiths can cut.

Claire Blakemore, Managing Director for Mul-T-Lock UK comments:
“National Home Security Month has become such an important event in the calendar, due to the good it does for homeowners and the security industry as a whole.
“Figures show that burglaries spike by as much as 25% in the autumn and winter months, which is why we want to encourage homeowners to reach out to their local locksmiths and act now.

“Mul-T-Lock’s Break Secure® 3DS cylinder offers locksmiths a key weapon in the battle against domestic break-ins. In fact, we are so confident that this product will provide maximum protection to a home, that we’re offering a full ten-year guarantee.”

Latest KitLock by Codelocks makes Access Control even easier

The new KL1000 G3 boasts a streamline design and enhanced featuresCodelocks has expanded its KitLock range with a new keyless access control solution for storage cabinets and lockers.

The KL1000 G3 comes with all the popular features of the KL1000 Classic Plus including Private and Public Functions, 24hr auto-unlock countdown timer in Public Function and up to 20 User Codes in Private Function. As the KL1000 G3 shares the same fittings and fixings, existing KL1000 installations can be easily upgraded and retrofitted.

The new KitLock, enhanced with a key override function, allows key holders to access the locker in the event of a forgotten code or emergency, increasing flexibility for managers, staff, and guests.

Codelocks has simplified the process of changing the batteries too. Like the KL1000 Classic and Classic Plus, the KL1000 G3 has been designed so on-door battery changes can easily be made. The battery compartment can be accessed via the front of the lock. This design feature reduces the time and disruption of changing the batteries.

The KL1000 G3 is a flexible solution, ideal for workplaces, staff rooms, leisure centres and gyms, providing immediate, convenient keypad access without the need for cards and keys.

Colin Campbell, Managing Director at Codelocks said:
“With many organisations now implementing hybrid working plans, we’re seeing an even greater demand for controlled storage access solutions that can deal with a variety of business needs.
“The KL1000 G3 is perfect for locations where cabinets and lockers may be allocated on both short- and long-term basis, for example business locations, schools, and hospitals, where workers could be dividing their time between home and the workplace.
“This lock also meets business needs for less person-to-person contact, including administration by facilities management. And with the additional option of Clean by Codelocks, businesses owners and managers can be sure they’re doing everything they can to reduce the risk to their employees and customers from COVID-19.”

Customers can choose to add Clean by Codelocks, an optional antibacterial finish which protects against viruses, bacteria, and environmental toxins. The clear coating has been shown to be highly effective at eliminating the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and can reduce bacterial growth by 99.96%.

The KL1000 G3 comes in two finishes colour – silver chrome and black chrome. The modernised chrome effect back panel and handle finish reflects the locks surroundings –giving it a slimmer, more subtle aesthetic.

It can also be enhanced with the Slam Latch for fast ‘push shut’ closure. It allows locker doors to be instantly locked, with no need to turn the lock handle to secure the locker. Slam Latch works on wooden and steel lockers and cabinets.

Under Attack! New Videos Demonstrate Strength of SWS UK’s SeceuroGlide Excel

Leading roller garage door manufacturer SWS UK, recently launched a series of live-action attack test videos showcasing the strength and security benefits behind their Secured by Design and LPCB approved roller garage door, the SeceuroGlide Excel.

The SeceuroGlide Excel was the first roller garage door in the UK to receive LPS1175, SR1. Standing for Loss Prevention Standard, the LPS 1175 is one of the security standards set by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB).

Products certified to this level provide a level of resistance to opportunist attempts at forced entry, using bodily physical force and a limited range of hand tools, including those that create noise. The Excel achieved the rating by passing a series of timed attacks which go beyond the requirements of doors with lower or no security ratings. This included a more vigorous, violent attack with no restrictions on how much noise could be made during the test.

Professionally shot at SWS UK’s on-site test facility, the Excel was once again put through its paces in a series of controlled attack tests, replicating break-in methods used by the LPCB. Consisting of three individual tests; Cut, Push and Lift, the door withheld the attacks, meaning entry was not gained by the would-be intruder.

During filming the same attacks were performed on a generic competitor door and the results speak for themselves. On each of the cut, push and lift tests, the generic door failed within one minute of the attack!

Scroll down to view the videos.

Commercial Director Martin Fletcher said,
‘Roller garage doors are visually very similar from all manufacturers, so it was important that we found a way of highlighting the quality and strength behind the SeceuroGlide range, and in particular the LPCB approved SeceuroGlide Excel.
‘Creating videos which featured the testing of the Excel alongside an inferior competitor door provides a strong, visual comparison on how each door performs when subjected to typical break-in methods.
‘We hope the video can be used to demonstrate the SeceuroGlide difference whilst highlighting SWS UK’s commitment to providing the very best in quality components and leading manufacturing practices.’
The video highlights can be viewed below or on YouTube.com

1977 Ford Cortina Estate with just 4400 miles heads to Car & Classic auction

Having evaded the ravages of rust and the attention of banger racers, a true survivor 1977 MkIV Ford Cortina 1600L Estate, with just 4,418 miles (7,711km) from new, is heading to auction with Car & Classic.

Underlining its status, 1,131,850 MkIV Cortinas were produced yet it is now one of the rarest variants of the model that regularly topped the UK sales charts. In 1977, the year this car was assembled, the Cortina was the UK’s best seller yet less than 70 are recorded on the road and just two 1600L from that year online.

Incredibly original, this 1600cc version was assembled in Lisbon, Portugal, and was driven sparingly by an elderly lady owner in the country, resulting in the low mileage and incredible level of preservation rarely seen in UK cars. The underside is particularly impressive with clean, smooth finishes on the floor, suspension and drivetrain.

The 1600cc engine retains its original blue paint on the rocker cover. Inside, it’s a similar story with beautifully preserved interior and, remarkably for any older Ford, no cracks in the dashboard.

Only slight paint blemishes on the bonnet and rear door, as a result of the wrap used to transform the car into a Dubai police car for its role in the Bell Bottom movie, would need attention.

The care bestowed upon it by the original owner is underlined by the inclusion of the service books, owner manual, spare key, tools and a set of factory mud flaps that were never fitted. Retaining its Portuguese heritage, the windscreen still sports local authority and insurance vignettes.

Already registered in the UK, it avoids the additional cost and paper now needed when importing cars from overseas.

“Car & Classic has the uncanny knack of offering some of the most incredible cars for auction and this another,” says Chris Pollitt, head of editorial at Car & Classic.
“Cortinas once graced every suburban semi’s driveway or were a staple for sales ‘reps’ to thrash to the next appointment, yet now they are virtually extinct and finding another like this would be near impossible.
“Easy to enjoy, run and service, it’s the car that will spark nostalgia, a true ‘had one of those’ cars, and would be the perfect contender for Hagerty’s Festival of the Unexceptional.”

The MkIV range was introduced in September 1976, replacing the ‘coke bottle’ MkIII. Available as a two-door, four-door or estate with engines ranging from 1300cc through to 2300cc V6, prices started at £2,533. In 1979, its best sales year, 11.3 per cent of new cars in sold the UK were Cortinas.

The online-only seven-day auction for the Ford Cortina started on the 30 September 2021.

You can find the latest car auctions on www.carandclassic.co.uk/auctions where the team specialise in enthusiast-owned cars, from the latest modern classics to pre-war and veteran classics, barn finds and concours-winning classics.

Golf Day Goes with a Swing

A tee-rific day was had by all when the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) hosted its charity golf day, raising approximately £4,000 for charity.

The event, at Branston Golf and Country Club, in Staffordshire, was attended by the association’s members who fielded 23 teams of four players. The event, which wasn’t held last year due to COVID restrictions, included a golfers’ breakfast prior to tee-off on the 18-hole championship course.

It was followed by dinner at the Pavilion, attended by 110 people, which raised further funds from a prize raffle.

Winners of the ADSA Cup were the Record Direct West team – their third successive win, which means they get to keep the coveted trophy. They were pushed all the way by the GEZE UK Contracts Team who finished second and Record Direct's South team in third.

Raffle ticket sales alone raised nearly £2,000 for charities, with a host of prizes donated by members and clients including a mini break, wine beer and chocolate hampers, gift vouchers, an Apple watch and a ballroom dance lesson.

Following the event, one of ADSA’s members made a further donation of £1,000.

Although the proceeds have yet to be totalled, early indications show that in the region of £4,000 was raised for three chosen charities:

Golf Fanatics – a golfing charity which raises money for good causes

Simon’s Heroes – which helps children in need

Lighthouse Club – the construction industry mental health charity

Said ADSA’s Managing Director Ken Price:
“What a day we had. Except for a one-hour shower we managed to avoid the rain and thunderstorms. We would like to thank everyone who attended the charity golf day and to all of those members and suppliers who kindly donated prizes to our charity raffle.”

ADSA’s next event is on the runway and scheduled for take-off. It’s Members Conference – incorporating an annual general meeting – will take place at the RAF Museum, Cosford, on 11 November.
