Investment in specialist training set to increase business for Arnold Laver

Twenty staff at leading timber merchant Arnold Laver are working through the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) Diploma in a move that will see the Sheffield-based company’s production, sales and technical staff improve their levels of knowledge and customer support and the company increase its fire doors business.

Arnold Laver takes particular pride in the high quality of both its products and customer service and invests significantly in training its staff so that they can share their expertise with their customers.

Arnold Laver's Sheffield Branch
The FDIS Diploma comprises a series of online education modules that have been researched and authored by industry experts, which can be studied at a pace to suit individual learners and is completed by passing the FDIS Diploma examination which is taken at a local centre. The Arnold Laver staff are working through the modules with the aim of improving their awareness of the issues around specification, installation and maintenance of fire doors. It is planned for some of the staff to move onto the second stage of the FDIS programme by becoming FDIS Certificated Inspectors.

Group joinery manager David Oldfield said:
“We are committed to ensuring our staff have the knowledge and skills to be able to provide the very best service. This is obviously good for our customers who benefit from our investment. However, it is also going to give us a new revenue stream that will help to grow the business too.”

The UK’s Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) is the first such scheme in Europe, designed to transform people’s knowledge and understanding about the critical role of fire doors. Its ultimate purpose is to help improve safety and save lives through creating a new pool of expertise and competence to help those with legal responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

It provides a vital resource to help the ‘Responsible Person’ complete fire risk assessments for the premises they manage. It also raises awareness of defective fire doors and the potentially tragic consequences of leaving these unchecked. FDIS is delivered by the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI), the two leading authorities on fire doors and their components.

Hörmann Sectional Garage Doors the First with Secured by Design Accreditation

The break in resistance of Hörmann automatic sectional garage doors has been recognised by the award of Secured by Design status.
The accreditation applies to the combination of Hörmann insulated or solid timber sectional doors with the Series 3 BiSecur ProMatic or SupraMatic operators.
The double skinned, insulated EPU and LPU doors both feature solid, CFC free polyurethane insulation that adds strength and rigidity to the door. With the EPU door the insulation is 42mm thick at the section joints and 20mm thick across each panel. For the LPU door this insulation is a constant 42mm thick, leading to even better thermal values.
The LTH solid timber doors are offered in a number of styles and buyers also have the option to have their own individual design recreated by Hörmann. These doors can be ordered in either Nordic Pine or Hemlock.
The ProMatic and SupraMatic operators which are part of the Secured by Design accreditation  both feature a mechanical lock. This unique automatic latching system makes it almost impossible to lever these doors open, and as it is a purely mechanical system, it remains fully functional even in the event of a power failure.
A wide range of styles and colours and even bespoke timber designs ensure there are doors to suit any home or project. Additionally matching entrance doors are available including the Hörmann ThermoPro range which also has Secured by Design accreditation.

For more information on the Hörmann range of products visit: www.hormann.co.uk

Ford Tests Cars That Park At The Touch of A Button and Automatically Swerve Around Obstacles

Ford has revealed technology developed to enable drivers to park at the touch of a button from inside or outside their car, as well as a prototype that combines automatic steering and braking to avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians.

Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering division harnessed developments made with existing Ford technologies, Active Park Assist and Ford PowerShift transmission, to produce a Ford Focus equipped with the prototype Fully Assisted Parking Aid system.

The next-generation push-button parking technology – that can even be operated from outside the car by remote control – operates steering, gear selection and forward and reverse motion.

Ford also unveiled Obstacle Avoidance technology on the Focus, which issues warnings if it detects slow-moving objects, stationary obstacles or pedestrians in the lane ahead. If the driver fails to steer or brake following the warnings, the system automatically steers and brakes to avoid a collision.

Barb Samardzich, Ford’s European Product Development vice president said:
“The future for Ford means developing innovative products and technologies – including Fully Assisted Parking Aid and Obstacle Avoidance – that help deliver a safer, more convenient, more desirable, more personalised and greener driving and ownership experience.”

“Ford Motor Company has always been one of the world’s leading pioneers and forward-thinkers. From the introduction of a whole new way of mass producing cars 100 years ago to the advanced safety and convenience features unveiled today, we continue to set the template and define the future for drivers and the automotive environment.”

Ford’s futuring experts have identified an increasing consumer demand worldwide for technology and features which make life easier and safer.

Sheryl Connelly, Ford Global Trends and Futuring manager said:
“Car-buyers are placing a growing emphasis on the ownership experience, on purchases that keep them connected on the move – trends that will have an effect on the vehicles, features and services they will choose in the future.”

Follow DHF Safety Guidelines when Installing Automatic Gates, Urges Health & Safety Executive

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has urged suppliers and installers of powered gates to follow Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) safety guidance to avoid tragic accidents caused by incorrectly installed gates.

The call from the HSE was made following a court case where a Wiltshire company was fined £3,000 with £7,000 costs. The company had failed to install adequate safety devices on an electric gate that trapped a three year old boy at a primary school in Bournemouth.

The boy was trapped between the gate and the gate post, the court heard. He had to be physically pulled free, but escaped serious injury. Bystanders were able to push the gate open just enough to prevent it from closing completely.

Swindon magistrates heard how the company had fitted an electronic closing device to the metal vehicle gates at a Bournemouth school. However, they failed to fit safety devices which would have automatically stopped the gates from closing completely if it detected someone was in the way.

An investigation by the HSE found the gate automation equipment installed by the company did not meet essential safety requirements.

After the hearing, an HSE spokesman said the company
"failed to ensure that the equipment they supplied and installed was able to operate safely. They had a clear legal requirement in this regard. This was an easily preventable incident that could have had tragic consequences.

"I would encourage all suppliers and installers of electric gates to take a look at the free guidance available on the Door and Hardware Federation website which has been endorsed by HSE."

The DHF represents the UK’s leading manufacturers, installers and maintainers of automatic electric gates. It formed its specialist Powered Gate Group at the request of the HSE which was anxious to see an industry-wide trade body responsible for developing higher standards of safety for automated gates.

Comprehensive information and advice on the DHF website includes the DHF Guide to Gate Safety Legislation and Standards, a complete guide to powered gate safety that provides vital best practice technical guidance to the industry. This lists all the current published standards which govern powered gate performance and the design requirements that need to be followed to ensure every gate installation is safe. It guides manufacturers on the safe design, manufacture and installation of safe powered gates.

In addition to adhering to the DHF safety guide, member companies within the Powered Gate Group of the DHF send their installers - and their personnel responsible for assessment and inspection - on an intensive two day DHF Powered Gate Safety Diploma training course. It is a condition of DHF membership that all members supplying powered gates send their relevant personnel through the training course.

For more information on powered gate safety, visit www.dhfpoweredgategroup.co.uk.

Cotswold Stays’ success with Carl F Groupco customers

John Mitchell, Head of Technical Support for Carl F Groupco
demonstrates the benefits of  FS Friction Stays.

FS Friction Stays from Cotswold Architectural Products have become best-selling lines for hardware distributor Carl F Groupco. Functionality and durability are reported as key reasons for the stays’ popularity. Manufacture in both ferretic and high grade corrosion resistant austenitic stainless steel is recognised as significant in adding to the appeal of the range.

Commenting on the popularity of the product, John Mitchell, Head of Technical Support for Carl F Groupco, said:
“With each variant available in ferretic or austenitic steel, the Cotswold range offers much more than a standard stay. The austenitic option provides higher grade corrosion resistance which is ideal for use on windows located in coastal areas or in places where high humidity is a factor, such as swimming pools.”

The “Extreme” variants of FS Friction Stays offer additional support for heavy duty windows up to 35kg in weight.

Featuring two reinforced austenitic heavy duty links which add strength, the friction stays are ideal for triple glazed windows.

Hart Door Systems' Airport Business Takes Off

Vladivostok Airport, one of many international airports
using Hart Door Systems.

Working with Vanderlande Industries BV at King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah, Hart Door Systems recently completed an order for fire and security shutters for the baggage handling system. Hart is also working with Antemina International on a door project at Baghdad International Airport.

“The Baghdad project was an interesting logistical challenge in that we had to ship 16 fire shutters, some 8m x 3.8m wide, in five containers to the port at Basra and then by road to Baghdad,” says Alan Richardson, Hart’s Export Manager. “It was a large order from a weight point of view, about 30 tonnes.”

Hart is also supplying fire and security systems for baggage handling at Aqaba Airport for Gate Technologies and Hart has also supplied four Speedor ‘Supers’ for Dubai International Airport baggage system , Terminal One, for Siemens.

All are being used in entrance/exit locations and vary in width from 4.52 m to six metres. A further airport contract is at Casablanca International where Hart has just completed on a fire and security shutter installation.

In the UK, Hart is delivering a range of its products from Speedor high-speed doors to a range of fire and security shutters on contracts at Heathrow, for Lakesmere, the Building Envelope Specialists , where four Speedor ‘Supers’, ranging in size from 2.807m to 3.75m wide to 2.6m high are required, and at Gatwick for Morgan Sindall PLC on the South Terminal Airside Bag Drop Development.

The Master Locksmiths Association Backs National Home Security Month

Dr Steffan George, development director of the
Master Locksmiths Association.

This October, The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) – the leading trade association for the locksmithing industry - is supporting National Home Security Month, which is designed to raise awareness of home security as the darker nights draw in.

With the clocks going back this year on Sunday October 27, the national initiative aims to highlight ways in which the general public can keep their homes and families safe, and provides advice through its website, www.homesecuritymonth.com, where users can also register for a newsletter providing security information.

Sponsored by security product manufacturer and MLA Affiliate Member Yale, the scheme provides tips on securing doors and windows, protecting outbuildings and using safes to guard valuables, as well as advising householders on burglar alarms and hi-tech security measures.

Dr Steffan George, development director for the Master Locksmiths Association, said:
“As an organisation committed to promoting home security, we’re delighted to be supporting National Home Security Month.

“This initiative is raising awareness of home security at a crucial time, with the darker nights providing further opportunities for criminals and making properties more vulnerable to burglary or vandalism.

“Encouraging the public to improve the security of their properties is to be applauded.”

Dr George added:
“If a homeowner, tenant or landlord wishes to review and update the security of their property, we’d always recommend they use a local, third party-accredited, professional locksmith, such as an MLA member, to undertake any work. This will ensure that products are specified and fitted correctly, and that insurance policies aren’t adversely affected.”

David Herbert, Head of Marketing for Yale, commented:
“This is the first year National Home Security Month has taken place and we are delighted that it has attracted support from a number of big names, including the Master Locksmiths Association, as well as industry bodies, locksmiths and the media.

“The campaign runs throughout October and is designed to create awareness around home security, driving demand for locksmith services throughout the autumn and winter.”

Organisations and businesses that sign up to support National Home Security Month will be given access to a secure part of www.homesecuritymonth.com, where they can access a range of promotional materials including posters, window stickers and social media content.

For further information on the MLA, to find your nearest MLA Licensed Locksmith or for further security advice, visit www.locksmiths.co.uk

Ringo Starr’s French Wheels for Sale at Bonhams

Beatle drummer’s facel vega bought at the 1964 earls court motor show as the group dominated the charts

Ringo Starr, (born Richard Starkey in 1940) the Beatles drummer, once owned this 1964 Facel Vega Facel II – ‘the world’s fastest four-seater’ - which is estimated to sell for £300,000 - £350,000 at Bonhams sale on Sunday 1st December in New Bond Street, London.

Powered by a 390bhp Chrysler Typhoon engine and with elegant bodywork by Jean Daninos it combined muscle and traditional looks with a whopping price tag of £5,570, a huge price for a car at the time. The car was delivered to Ringo’s home in Weybridge, Surrey. This glamorous grand tourer was perfect for long motorway runs with its huge V8 engine making light work of it. The car’s current owner has it insured for £500,000.

Ringo owned the car for a total of four years after buying it directly from the stand at Earls Court Motor Show in 1964. Credited with singing lead vocals on ’With a little help from my friends’ and ‘Yellow Submarine’, he was co-writer of ‘Don’t Pass Me By’ and Octopus’s Garden’. When the Beatles formed in 1960 he was a member of another group, joining the Beatles in 1962 replacing Pete Best. Within two years he was shopping at Earls Court for this superb French car, one of only two such cars produced.

Ringo must have felt that he more than deserved a special car. The Beatles songs practically dominated the airwaves in the 1960's. This was especially true in 1964 when, for nine consecutive weeks the group held the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 with various singles and during that period the top five singles on the Billboard Hot 100 were all Beatles singles: ‘Can't Buy Me Love’ ‘Twist and Shout’ ‘She Loves You’ and ‘I Want to Hold You Hand’ dominated the airwaves.

Ringo Starr's car. Chassis HK2 B160, a Right Hand Drive Facel Vega Facel II, bought new by Ringo, was one of only two such cars with the larger 6.7 Litre engine and manual gearbox and the very last of only 26 RHD Facel II’s produced.

In its relatively short life, the French firm of Facel produced approximately 2,900 cars, all of which were stylish, luxurious and fast. Hand built, they were necessarily very expensive – the Facel II was priced in Rolls-Royce territory – and bought by the rich and famous seeking something exclusive and distinctive. The roll call of owners includes royalty, politicians, diplomats and entertainers: Tony Curtis, Danny Kaye, Ringo Starr, Joan Fontaine and Ava Gardner being counted among the latter. Confirming that there was high-performance substance behind Facel's unquestionable style, they were owned and driven by great motor racing figures such as Sir Stirling Moss, Maurice Trintignant and Rob Walker.

Launched in 1961, the Facel II was destined to be the last of the V8-engined models, production ceasing in 1964 after an unsuccessful venture into engine manufacture effectively bankrupted the company. Production of the preceding HK500 amounted to only 500-or-so units between 1958 and 1961 and that of the Facel II to a mere 182 (26 RHD). Today these rare Franco-American classics are highly sought after.

Sholto Gilbertson, a director in Bonhams Collectors Car department, comments:
“This car has to be one of the rarest and most collectable modern classic cars given its almost unique engineering and its place as part of pop music history. As Ringo drove this car he would have listened on the car radio to the Beatles total domination of the pop charts. The sale of this car represents a once in a lifetime opportunity for anyone who loves cars and the Beatles.”
