Morgan Bids Farewell to its Steel Chassis after 84 Years of Production

The Morgan Motor Company has this week finished production of its last-ever steel chassis car to be built. The momentous occasion marks 84 years of continuous production for the underpinning – barring factory closures during World War II and the coronavirus pandemic – making it the longest-ever running production car architecture of all time, anywhere in the world.

The firm’s steel ladder chassis was introduced in 1936, in the Morgan 4-4. This car’s name came from the fact that it was the first Morgan to have both four cylinders and four wheels – Morgan’s vehicles before this point, since the company’s foundation in 1909, were all three wheelers.

The steel chassis, while undergoing many alterations, and improvements over its lifetime, went on to underpin the Plus 4, Plus 4 Plus, first-generation Plus 8, 4 Seater, V6 Roadster, and the 4-4’s eventual successor, the 4/4. In fact, every four-wheeled Morgan produced before 2019, with the exception of the Aero range and second-generation Plus 8, has used a variation of the steel chassis.

The chassis’ famous design elements include its combination of sliding pillar front and leaf spring rear suspension. The sliding pillar setup, in particular, marked a defining characteristic of the platform, having been used by very few other car manufacturers. With this arrangement, the hub and wheel assembly moves vertically, on a kingpin fixed rigidly at its top and bottom.

It ensures there is no wheel camber change during compression or rebound, maximising lateral cornering grip. In total, 35,000 four-wheeled Morgan cars with a steel chassis have been made, exported to 65 countries around the world. Many of these models, adored by their owners, are still in active use today.

The final steel chassis car, a Morgan Plus 4 70th Edition, has been purchased by a loyal Morgan customer who will keep and treasure it, but also enjoy driving it on the road for years to come. It will sit alongside his selection of remarkable cars from Morgan’s long history, which includes the famous Le Mans-winning Plus 4, ‘TOK 258’.

The Plus 4 70th Edition celebrates 70 years of production of the Plus 4, which began in 1950. Limited to a run of just 20 individually numbered examples, the editions feature a gold-painted chassis, Platinum Metallic paintwork, and a host of other upgrades.

Morgan’s replacement for its steel chassis, the bonded aluminium CX-Generation platform, was introduced in the Morgan Plus Six, at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2019. It came after four years of development, and using lessons learnt from its previous aluminium platform, found in the Aero range and second-generation Plus 8.

The CX-Generation platform has since gone on to underpin the all-new Morgan Plus Four, which saw its debut in March 2020. While almost a century newer in technical capability, it maintains the level of driving pleasure that has always defined Morgan sports cars. Despite the cutting-edge platform technology in these models, Morgan’s famed craftsmanship and use of natural materials continues.

Steve Morris, CEO and Chairman of Morgan Motor Company, said:
“The steel chassis has been fundamental to Morgan’s production for more than eight decades, found beneath the skin of some of the most important and successful models in the company’s history. Its unique driving charm is loved by many and, in fact, demand for steel chassis cars is still strong.
“However, with the introduction of our CX-Generation platform, which underpins our revolutionary new range of four-wheeled products, the time has come to bid farewell to the steel chassis. We are delighted to present this final steel chassis car to a long-standing friend of the factory, who we know will enjoy it alongside his extensive Morgan collection.”

What experience or training was required?

  • I have 10 years sales experience including 3 years field sales experience prior to starting at Garador, this included working in Media Marketing & External Sales for a National Builders Merchant.

What does a normal day look like?

  • A normal day tends to start with a wake up call from my two children! In reality every day is different, however I’m normally on the road by 7.15 on route to see my first customer of the day! My day to day duties largely involve visiting customers at their premises and offering support on products and pricing, ensuring showrooms have all our up to date products, working on new business together such as housing developers.

What are the best and hardest parts of the job?

  • Best – I have a excellent customer base in the South West and have built up some great relationships over the past 3 or so years.

Hardest – Being away from my young family.

Have you worked on any interesting projects?

  • I have worked on lots of interesting projects! Because we have quite a diverse product range, I get to work on lots of different projects across the region which requires different specifications.

What has been your proudest moment at Garador?

  • I was awarded the Managing Directors award fairly early on in my career with Garador, for going above and beyond the call of duty with a customer and really going out of my way to help the company. This gave me great confidence that what I was doing was being noticed and appreciated.

AlluGuard Introduces the ZF80 Upgrade

Leading door manufacturer AlluGuard has announced a new upgrade to its bestselling AlluGuard 77 roller door.

Known as the ZF80, the upgrade is a new lifting system for the AlluGuard 77, which comprises a new drive shaft, locking rings and locking straps, along with a new safety brake and AlluDrive motor.

The introduction of the ZF80 has made roller door installation much easier, as the safety brake is now pre-fitted, along with an electrical override.

Safety has also been improved, as if and when the safety brake activates, the override automatically shuts down the tubular motor – both protecting the device and ensuring that operation is halted and the door is kept in a safe mode.

“The AlluGuard 77 is one of the most popular roller doors in the country and is an excellent product,” says AlluGuard MD Gary Brooks.

“But we never rest on our laurels and are always looking to improve, which is why we came up with the concept of the ZF80.

“A lot of thought and hard work has gone into its development and we are delighted with the result.

“It increases the efficiency and speed of the AlluGuard 77 and makes it significantly easier and quicker to install. And the new safety features are very attractive to the end customer.”

To find out more about the AlluGuard range of products call 0845 3665831 or email info@alluguard.co.uk

Green Homes Grant Presents Opportunity: Distinction Doors welcomes New Initiative

Distinction Doors has welcomed news of a new government initiative which will see homeowners in England receive vouchers worth up to £5,000 to make environmentally friendly home improvements.

Under the Green Homes Grant scheme, the Government will pay at least two-thirds of the cost of the energy-saving products, capped at £5,000 per household.  This could be more for those on a low-income and potentially cover the full cost of the improvements, up to £10,000.

While companies and homeowners await the finer details, including a definitive list of eligible products, Distinction believes that the scheme will create valuable opportunities for those who fabricate and install its doors.

“We provide the most energy efficient composite door on the market,” says Bethaney Larkman, marketing manager for Distinction Doors.
“So, if insulated composite doors qualify for the grant, we are the ideal choice for those wishing to take advantage of the scheme.”

Distinction GRP composite doors have been proven to be 19% more thermally efficient than a 48mm solid timber core composite door and 17% more thermally efficient than a 44mm traditional timber panelled door.  Doors were tested at the University of Salford’s Energy House.  The doors also achieve indicative energy ratings between A and C, with A delivering the best performance levels.

“The scheme is set to launch in September, with homeowners having to apply online for the vouchers,” continues Bethaney.
“In the meantime, we will be working hard, in partnership with our customers, to raise consumer awareness of our doors; efforts which will be rewarded regardless of their eligibility.
“We can assist with showroom development including literature, access to our online door-designer, social media support and product videos.”

Established in 2004, Distinction Doors are the market leaders in composite doors and were the first to launch to the UK market.

As the UK’s leading entrance door supplier for over 10 years, Distinction Doors have formed an unrivalled pedigree for providing premium quality products, thanks to their renowned GRP composite door slab, complimentary glazing cassette system and triple glazed, laminated as standard Distinction Glass range.

Today Distinction Doors supply over 5,500 composite doors per week operating from our purpose-built 86,000 sq. ft. distribution centre in South Yorkshire. An increased portfolio of superior products and continued business investment will ensure customers’ growth plans are fully supported and that Distinction Doors continue to lead the way.

How Door Hardware Selection Can Help Protect Against Infection

With the spread of infection now at the height of concern, Karen Trigg of Allegion UK highlights how door hardware can lend a hand in helping to slow the spread of bacteria.

The spread of COVID-19 has sent a shockwave of concern across the world. It has acted as a wakeup call for everyone - from government and healthcare officials to the general public and facility managers. There’s a renewed appreciation for maintaining safe and sterile environments, and this is especially true for facility managers and their buildings.

Care homes and healthcare environments, in particular, have always been on high alert. With the elderly and ill being at a higher risk of developing severe health problems due to the spread of harmful viruses and bacteria, it’s imperative that their facilities are kept as safe and sterile as possible.

Even before the viral pandemic, it was known that bacteria could remain active on common contact surfaces for days – including door handles and grab rails, transmitting from person to person. This poses an added challenge for facility managers.

How can facility managers take steps to prevent the spread of bacterial infections such as E.coli, S.aureus and MRSA?

Well, alongside the primary infection control measures, such as hand hygiene and environmental cleaning, there are other ways in which facilities with high footfall can help protect against infection – with door hardware choices.

Bacteria and surfaces

Experts say that around 80 percent of infections are transmitted through the environment. Yet, in a detailed 2018 report conducted by Allegion UK, it highlighted that only 71 percent of healthcare facilities use environmental cleaning as a method to prevent the spread of infection.

In addition, only 52 percent of the healthcare respondents believed their existing infection control measures to be robust and effective.

With this in mind, facility managers must look to improve their methods and seek additional ones too. Infection control precautions, including regular and thorough hand washing and surface cleansing, as well as the availability of anti-bacterial gel, is the first step in preventing the spread of bacteria and microorganisms.

In addition to safe hygiene practices, decision makers can go one further and take extra precautions by investing in hardware preventatives, such as antimicrobial coatings, that are designed to keep the spread of bacteria to a minimum – especially in buildings that need it the most such as hospitals, schools and care homes.

How to handle cross-contamination

Under The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 act, facility managers have a duty to keep inhabitants safe and their environments clean. Now, more than ever, it’s integral for decision makers to think of additional ways to keep their premises hygienic.

The first touch point for anyone entering, exiting or moving around a building is the door hardware, hence why it can be the most contaminated area. So for that extra layer of protection, decision makers can use tailored door hardware with inbuilt antibacterial properties

Antimicrobial coating for example, is specifically formulated to inhibit the growth of bacteria by interrupting cell multiplication and can go a long way in reducing the spread of bacteria.

Embedded within the nylon during production, anti-bacterial protection can’t be washed away or rubbed off. This provides effective and long-lasting defence, he¬¬lping prevent germ build-up, and significantly reducing cross-contamination from contact areas.

Designed to provide immediate escape in an emergency, exit devices allow people to quickly leave a building without having to unlock the door. Again, some exit devices also include an added antimicrobial coating, which helps provide protection against the growth of bacteria and micro-organisms. Aside from aiding egress, these products are ideal for use in sterile environments such as operating rooms and cleanrooms.

Automating doors can also help to inhibit the spread of infection, especially in facilities with a high footfall. Automatic door sensors are used to activate operator devices fitted to the main access doors. In a surgery for example, these doors allow doctors and nurses to enter and exit the sterile area without touching any door handles or activation switches.

Investing in long-term door hardware products will help to protect your premises. And knowing that the premises is hygienic and cleaner will also help to improve staff satisfaction and productivity, leading to a well-organised, operated and efficient-running facility.

Karen Trigg of Allegion UK
Invest now for a safer future

As a facility manager, it should be a continuous objective to ensure optimal health and safety for all people within your building(s).

No matter the size of the premises, especially in the current climate, you should be confident that your facility is equipped to help prevent the spread of infection.

Although antimicrobial coating is not a substitute for good hygiene, by raising the standards of door hardware and infection control, we can fight the invisible threats more effectively. Not only will it help contain the spread of germs and bacteria, but taking this step will help to secure your premises and leave you well prepared for the future.

ASSA ABLOY Door Group boasts impressive track record with London Underground and Crossrail projects

Door Group, a unit of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland, has secured a series of high-profile contracts with Transport for London and Crossrail Limited.

These contracts have included supplying and installing security doors for major London Underground redevelopments including London Bridge, Bond Street and King’s Cross, as well as station upgrades such as Victoria.

Full doorset solutions have been delivered and installed to Crossrail’s Elizabeth line stations at Canary Wharf, Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Woolwich and Custom House. They have also been installed at other sites along the route including Pudding Mill, Eleanor Street and Mile End, as well as at the Elizabeth line depot at Old Oak Common.

Each project presented its own demands and challenges in relation to product performance requirements. Doorsets had to be fully compliant to achieve the latest standards and meet the specialist needs of each environment. Factors to consider included fire, acoustics, air tightness, high-security and pressure resistance.

Decorative finishes such as vitreous enamel, stainless-steel and bronze cladding helped complement the aesthetics of the surroundings on doors that required a finishing touch, and many of the doorsets required installation in challenging conditions, being underground, with tight access and with restricted working hours.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Door Group said:
“Our experience working with London Underground provided us with the ideal foundation for supporting our working partners on the Crossrail project for the Elizabeth line stations.
“Each contract brought its own individual challenges, but from the very beginning we worked closely with the architects and contractors involved to understand their requirements. This meant we could provide specialist and tailored solutions that met their exact needs. Solutions were carefully chosen from both our Powershield and Prima steel door ranges including cross corridor doors for high traffic fire escape routes, and pivoted fire rated platform doors to conceal station equipment rooms.
“We take great pride in our wide portfolio of well-respected transport contracts. It says a great deal that customers choose to work with us time and time again, and we put this down to our full-service offering, financial stability, and expert advice at every stage of the project, from specification to installation and inspection.”

One of the Earliest E-Types to be offered for Sale by Actor and Comedian Steve Coogan

A very exciting Jaguar E-Type is to be offered for sale at the forthcoming Silverstone Classic Live Online Auction from the highly desirable collection of TV actor and comedian Steve Coogan.

The Jaguar E-Type needs no introduction, but this particular car is very special indeed. It is one of the first 92 right-hand drives cars produced and one of the 56 used by the dealers as demonstration cars. This E-Type was the first one that went to Scotland in July 1961, to Jaguar Edinburgh. The dealers were forbidden to sell these cars until the September.

On the 8th September 1961 chassis number #62 was registered to its very first owner in North Berwick who kept the car until 1978 when it was sold to its second owner who resided in Edinburgh. It was later sold to its third Scottish owner in Fife and returned to Edinburgh for its fourth owner. By spending much of its time in Scotland 062 kept a very low profile.

In 2016 Silverstone Auctions sold the car, having been coaxed out of Scotland and now identified as one of the 92 original cars. An eagle-eyed Quentin Willson, himself a former owner of an early E-Type took note of the car’s sale and with his friend Steve Coogan set about acquiring the car for Steve’s rare and desirable collection of classic cars.

During #62’s lifetime it had undergone some restoration but in 2017 XK Engineering were commissioned to carry out a full nut and bolt restoration of this very rare and early flat floor E-Type. This project was to take two years and was fully documented by Classic Cars magazine.

Most importantly this rare early E-Type still retained its matching body, engine and cylinder head as well as Moss gearbox. The detail of this car didn’t stop there, it still had its full flat floor, split throttle linkage, rear view mirror, bonnet louvres and the all-important outside bonnet latches. These unique features making this car stand out as one of these very early cars.

The restoration process was to the highest standards possible, it could be described as forensic the level of detail that went into it. It was finished in its original colour of Sherwood Green with a green leather interior and French Grey roof. As a result of this detail, the car on offer is quite possibly the best you could find, exquisite in detail with a full history file, a Jaguar Heritage Certificate and now a unique opportunity to own a genuine concours winning British icon estimated at £300,000 to £350,000.

Nick Whale, Silverstone Auctions Managing Director commented:

“Where do I start, this really is a fabulous car of the highest quality. The history that accompanies it is just perfect, the restoration speaks for itself and has been fully documented. Steve has kept this car in pristine condition in his own personal collection.
“This is a very special opportunity to own one of the earliest and rarest of Jaguar E-Types with the external bonnet locks. A real collector’s car.”
Silverstone Auctions welcome enquiries from seriously interested parties and are happy to arrange appointments to view.

They can be contacted on 01926 691141 or email enquiries@silverstoneauctions.com and would be happy to talk with you about this E-Type or other cars offered in their sale.

St. Modwen completes final phase at pioneering Doncaster Park in partnership with Hörmann UK

Housing 250,000sq. ft of prime industrial warehousing space, St. Modwen Park Doncaster continues to push forward the standard for high quality warehousing in South Yorkshire.

The recent completion of the speculative development of Phase 3 improves on the design principles of previous phases, to deliver three separate units of high specification speculative warehouses on the established 27 acre business park.

Located near the M18 and less than 10 miles from Doncaster Sheffield Airport, St. Modwen Park Doncaster already provides some of the nation’s leading energy, transport and manufacturing providers with state-of-the-art warehousing solutions.

The final phase, totalling more than 108,000 sq. ft of industrial space, features high-bay warehouses with Grade A specification offices, which includes raised access floors, lift access and combined heating and cooling ventilation systems.

The three units, spanning 21,614 sq. ft, 34,464 sq. ft and 53,072 sq. ft respectively were completed in February 2020, and feature Hörmann UK’s leading industrial loading solutions. This includes its high-quality Level Access Doors, Loading Bays, standard sized Dock Shelters and Dock Levellers, which are supported by a range of complementary safety accessories.

Hörmann UK’s industrial solutions were specified across the three units to offer potential occupiers the opportunity to increase the overall efficiency, safety and security of their supply chain operations.

Mark Greasby, Senior Construction Manager at St. Modwen Industrial & Logistics, said:
“The completion of our final phase at St. Modwen Park Doncaster showcases our ability to bring forward much-needed industrial and logistics developments in key  business locations, such as South Yorkshire.

“We are delighted to continue our business partnership with Hörmann UK in the delivery of these further units and look forward to welcoming further leading businesses to sit alongside the likes of DB Schenker, Robert Bosch Limited and Thornhill Engineering Limited.”
Across the three units, Hörmann UK’s durable Dock Shelters have been installed to provide optimum operational efficiency. Constructed from heavy duty galvanised steel and featuring collapsible scissor arm frames and rain drainage channels, the shelters are designed to withstand the external elements, without compromising on functionality.

Hörmann UK’s Standard Dock Levellers have also been installed throughout the loading bays, which are 6000kg rated load under regulations EN1398 and feature a 400mm long swing lip for operational ease.

The 42mm thick insulated sectional loading bay doors also feature a sensing motor to create a safety system that halts the door if it becomes obstructed in either direction. This provides enhanced safety and security throughout the loading and unloading processes.

The bays have also been installed in conjunction with Hörmann UK’s innovative rayon reinforced Dock Bumpers, which are constructed from recycled tyre rubber with 15mm thick steel. The bumper pairs are designed to minimise any potential damage to the bay in the event of a vehicle making direct contact with the building.

Paul Tulley, Key Account Manager for Hörmann UK, said:
“Hörmann UK continues to be a leading industrial supplier for St. Modwen Industrial & Logistics as part of a £1million contract to provide logistics solutions for 16 different sites constructed throughout 2019 and 2020.

“The completion of Phase 3 at St. Modwen Park Doncaster is a reflection of its impressive growth strategy and commitment to providing the very latest innovations and technologies available on the industrial market. We look forward to continuing to work closely together throughout 2020 to aid the completion of a number of impressive new sites.”
