Escape Fast with Lockmaster Panic double door gearing

Yale Door and Window Solutions has unveiled a patented double door multipoint panic door system, created and accredited to offer emergency egress for a wide range of applications.

The new double door panic door system from the world’s favourite lock company has been designed specifically to work with Lockmaster to offer all the advantages of high security and compression performance, together with accredited emergency egress capability.

Complementing the existing single panic door system, the new patented double door variant is fully CE Marked and tested to industry standards including full ICM accredited compliance with EN1125:2008, the European standard panic door hardware performance.

Says Huw Rogers, Technical Services Manager at Yale Door and Window Solutions:
“The new patented double door solution is a unique system for use on outward opening single and double exit doors, even in high frequency applications.

“Even more importantly for Yale Door and Window Solutions, it is a showcase for our commitment to fabricators, to introduce innovations in hardware that can be easily included into an existing product portfolio, with minimal impact to their operational processes, regardless of whether they are manufacturing PVCu, composite, timber of aluminium doors.”

An optional external access handle set working on an innovative clutch mechanism, ensures that once the key is removed the system is securely locked to the outside whilst maintaining full emergency egress functionality at all times.

The new Lockmaster Panic double door gearing is certified to 200,000 cycles on doors up to 200 kilos and is tested to resist corrosion to in excess of 240 hours NSS.

As with all Yale Door and Window Solutions Locking systems, the new system is offered with a ten year product guarantee, for additional peace of mind.

Door & Hardware Federation membership at all-time high

The number of companies joining the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has hit record highs as the federation continues to drive up levels of quality, compliance, training and safety in the door, hardware and powered gate sectors.

Its total membership is fast approaching 270, its highest level ever, with an average of five new members joining every month. The DHF represents all the key players in industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates, as well as the leading UK manufacturers and suppliers of building hardware, locks and architectural ironmongery.

The membership boost follows growing realisation amongst companies that to gain competitive advantage in the market they need to adopt the quality and compliance values championed by the DHF.

All DHF members provide products and services to Quality Assured standards. The DHF is introducing industry-leading training schemes for its members in a number of sectors including industrial doors, garage doors and powered gates.

All non-fire products produced by DHF industrial door and doorset members are now CE marked. The DHF has been actively helping its members achieve complete CE mark compliance in the months before this became a legal requirement on July 1 this year.

A number of the new members joining the DHF are from the gate automation sector. The DHF powered gate members are introducing a Safety Assured mark which only gate manufacturers, suppliers and installers of powered automatic gates and equipment belonging to the DHF can apply to their products.

Said Bob Perry, executive chairman of the DHF:
“The message is now getting across loud and clear to door, hardware and powered gate companies. To compete effectively in today’s tough and demanding marketplace, companies must strive to achieve the levels of quality, compliance and safety already reached by our members. And the best way for them to do that is to seek membership of the DHF and take advantage of the benefits and help that we provide.”

To find out how to become a member of the DHF, or to learn more about the benefits of specifying from DHF members, visit the new website: www.dhfonline.org.uk .

P C Henderson shortlisted at this year’s Construction Marketing Awards

P C Henderson is delighted to announce it has been shortlisted at this year's Construction Marketing Awards (CMA) in two categories for Best Digital Campaign and Best Mobile Campaign.

P C Henderson’s Marketing Manager, Gemma Smith said;
"We're delighted and proud to be finalists at these Awards. Being shortlisted highlights how our team works together to continuously ensure we provide marketing tools that enhance our relationship with our customers further.”

The company also designed ‘Henderson on the move’ a free web app that is suitable for all smart phones and tablets which provides all of its brochures and technical information when customers are away from the office.

Gemma Smith comments on the entry for Best Digital Campaign;

“We are always looking at methods of reducing our carbon footprint whilst saving money on the production of printed marketing material. Due to the nature of our industry there are often small design modifications that could have an impact on the information supplied in a brochure, and with a global distribution network, it was decided to update our brochures digitally to offer an alternative to a printed copy.”
The company worked with Digital Issue to produce the digital brochures.

The Construction Marketing Awards recognise marketing excellence across the built environment. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Thursday 5th December at the Radisson Blu Hotel in west London.

IronmongeryDirect launches online service for Declaration of Performance documents

IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, is helping to keep their customers stay one step ahead by providing direct access to Declaration of Performance (DoP) documents to support the new requirements for CE marking.

From 1st July, under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), it became mandatory for manufacturers, distributors and importers to provide a Declaration of Performance (DoP) document for all CE marked construction products that are covered by a harmonised European Standard.  Put simply - without the DoP, which declares the certification criteria, the CE mark is rendered invalid.

IronmongeryDirect customers can download the supporting DoP documents via the company’s website www.ironmongerydirect.com.

IronmongeryDirect has been supplying architectural ironmongery to tradesmen for over 40 years. Starting out as a traditional shop, today customers can browse over 14,000 products in the 900-page catalogue, online and now with the new App.

With the UK’s biggest range of quality products in stock for next day delivery as standard, an award winning service and low trade prices, IronmongeryDirect is proud to be the masters of their trade.

P C Henderson extends Securefold range to reflect growing trends

P C Henderson, a leader in the design and manufacture of sliding gear systems for doors, is pleased to announce the introduction of a new colour and weight category to its popular Securefold range for exterior folding doors.

To answer aesthetic demand, a black finish to components has now been added to the range which already includes brushed satin, polished stainless steel and titanium gold.

Andrew Royle, UK Commercial Director explains:
“The new finish is ideal for a multitude of applications including rustic farmhouse renovations or sleek contemporary developments. We are committed to developing products that offer our customers a variation of styles and functional options to ensure that they have the right products for each project.”

While two new square and radius morticed hinges complement the range by providing alternative options to match the customers’ aesthetic vision.

With the growing trend in the use of triple glazed doors, Securefold Ultra has now been tested to 100kg to accommodate project requirements.

As more projects look to create an indoor / outdoor experience, security is of a high priority. The range includes the Securefold Ultra system which gives the home an extra layer of protection with all the aesthetic and weather resistance benefits associated with modern design for outward opening exterior folding doors.

Securefold Ultra has enhanced security components certified to PAS24 and BS EN 1627 RC2 and accredited as Secured by Design hardware. These accreditations and standards mean the system meets the requirements to be classified as burglar resistant.

With three points of locking on every external door seam the robust hardware on the door prevents entry. A unique interlocking anti-tamper hinge makes it difficult for it to be forced out of position or dismantled.

Additional security components complement this feature, which include a specialist hinge security bolt and a locking screw mechanism that stops the hardware being disengaged from the door. The system’s multi point lock, featuring anti-snap and anti-bump cylinder, provides additional security on the swing door to withstand attack from the most determined intruder.

All components in the Securefold range undergo extensive cycle testing in accordance with EN1527 where it has achieved in excess of 100,000 cycles - if the set of doors are opened and closed twice a day the system would last over 137 years.

For further information and to download the digital brochures visit www.pchenderson.com

Worried About the Rising Number of Crash For Cash Scams?

Then the New Nextbase Fault-Proving Incarcam - from £79 might be just what you need for Christmas!

Nextbase InCarCam 302G - with mount

InCarCam™ high quality HD in-car camera with GPS and G-force tracking offers price breakthrough for Christmas market.

Nextbase, major provider of in-car entertainment systems to the UK retail and automotive sector, has recently launched the new InCarCam™ range. These high definition in-car cameras (or 'dash cams') track the exact movements of a vehicle, record and log driving incidents and can prove who is at fault in a collision.
Nextbase InCarCam 202
Back image

Designed to improve road safety, they may also prevent fraudulent claims that increase insurance premiums, they can be used as evidence in the event of police involvement and they can capture other incidents such as road rage.

Suitable for all drivers, the InCarCam makes an ideal Christmas gift, with the three models in the range retailing at just £79, £99 and £149. Available now at Halfords, Tesco, Amazon and other renowned UK retailers.

Nextbase InCarCam 202
Front image
According to statistics from the 2012 'National Road Traffic Survey', conducted by the Department for Transport and DVLA, there were 34.5 million cars on the UK roads with 1 in 236 people reporting an accident.

Motorists can experience stress and frustration when, following an accident, they cannot prove exactly what happened or who was at fault, which can often lead to ambiguity over important insurance claims, loss of no claims discount and increase in premiums.

And, as the Mail on Sunday recently reported, in-car cameras can also protect motorists from the actions of others who may be driving dangerously and may even be deliberately causing accidents in 'crash-for-cash' fraud claims. They can also be used by motorway users to defend themselves against accusations of lane-hogging or tailgating, which recently became punishable by a £100 fine and three penalty points.

Nextbase

Entering the market with a highly competitive retail price up to £50 cheaper than rival in-store branded products, the top range InCarCam models (the 302-G and 402-G) include G-sensor telemetric recording to document G forces applying to the vehicle. This can prove whether the motorist applied the brakes or swerved just before or during an accident.

These devices also feature GPS location logging to show the exact journey route and to pinpoint an accident location using Google Maps. The camera records its footage onto a memory card in HD quality - from 720p to full HD 1080p, depending on the model. The 402-G also offers Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), which provides superior contrast and crisp images during day and night-time shooting.

Robert Grant, managing director of Nextbase UK , says:
"In the unfortunate event of a road traffic accident occurring, things can happen ever so quickly. High levels of shock and stress can make it difficult for the motorist to remember afterwards exactly what occurred. Sometimes, the other driver may be trying to make a fraudulent claim for more damage or injury than was actually sustained. If there are no eye-witnesses on the accident scene, it can be difficult to prove the truth. In answer to this common problem, the InCarCam records the exact progress of the accident."

He adds:
"The rise in use of in-car cameras in other countries, such as the USA and Central European countries, have shown us how important these devices can be to people after a crash, to prove they weren’t at fault and keep their premiums to a minimum.

"The Nextbase InCarCam is recognised by UK motor insurance providers. One specialist insurance broker, Adrian Flux, is offering up to a 15% policy discount to motorists who install the device in their vehicle. For some drivers this means the camera pays for itself before it's even switched on. "

Gerry Bucke, general manager at Adrian Flux, said:
"Fraudulent claims are one of the biggest reasons for the increase in insurance premiums in recent years, and in-car cameras can help insurers identify potentially fraudulent claims and determine which party is at fault. That’s why we give up to 15 per cent off to those who fit a Nextbase in-car camera."

Fire Door Safety Week is a roaring success

The UK’s inaugural Fire Door Safety Week has been hailed a huge success, reaching in excess of 6.5 million people over the period and resulting in significant political support from the Fire Minister and an important legacy of industry initiatives which will improve fire safety.

Fire Door Safety Week was the brainchild of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme, and united the fire door industry to raise greater awareness of the critical role of fire doors. It ran from 16 September, and received extensive backing from trade associations, housing associations, manufacturers, suppliers and fire and rescue services across the country.

Among Fire Door Safety Week’s 47 official supporters were the Government’s Fire Kills campaign, the Association for Specialist Fire Protection, the Passive Fire Protection Association, the Institute of Fire Prevention Officers, and major property and construction groups such as the National Landlords Association, the Federation of Private Residents’ Associations, the Federation of Master Builders, Construction Products Association, Builders Merchants Federation, National Social Housing Fire Strategy Group and UK Contractors Group.

The Fire Door Safety Week website received over 4,000 visits during the week from 3,003 unique visitors. There were more than 2,600 page views for the toolkit which gave users access to downloadable promotional items for the campaign, videos and fire door fact cards.

The campaign also took off on social media, with almost 2 million impressions generated from Twitter alone, and led to more than 1,600 views of the latest Theodore Firedoor video which revealed the awful state of fire doors in one major city hospital.

A radio campaign on the second day of Fire Door Safety Week resulted in 22 items of coverage on leading regional and local stations, reaching 2.7 million listeners across all English regions.

Fire Door Safety Week drew attention to specific issues such as poor installation and maintenance, and encouraged building owners and users to check the operation and condition of their fire doors. It focused on getting critical sectors, such as healthcare and hotels, to understand the correct specification, supply, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of fire doors in their buildings.

Iain McIlwee, BWF chief executive, and John Fletcher, scheme manager of BWF-CERTIFIRE met with the Fire Minister Brandon Lewis MP at the end of the campaign to discuss the issues surrounding fire door safety. The Minister was fully supportive of Fire Door Safety Week returning in 2014 and expressed a desire to learn more about the fire door industry.

Summarising the week, Iain McIlwee stated:
“The campaign was really encouraging, but there are about 3 million new fire doors bought and installed every year in the UK, the vast majority made from timber. In a recent review of 100 cases prosecuted under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, fire doors were the second highest reason for prosecutions.

“In many cases, incorrect doors and components are specified or brought onto site. And even when fire doors are correctly specified and installed, a recent survey among fire risk assessors revealed that 80% of the escape routes they saw were obstructed, 65% of fire doors were wedged open and 85% had door closers disconnected.

“With a challenge of this scale, one thing is certain - Fire Door Safety Week will return next year.”

To get involved in Fire Door Safety Week 2014 or to access resources from the week, contact firedoors@bwf.org.uk

ASSA Supplies to Award Winning Project

ASSA, part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, a division of ASSA ABLOY, has supplied products for an award winning children’s hospice.

Led by Spiller Architectural Ironmongery Ltd based in Oxford Road, Yeovil, Little Harbour in Cornwall was awarded the Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards, by GAI and RIBA for Public Health Buildings. The children’s hospice was an ambitious project, which focused very much on the specialist needs of its multiple users.

Designed to provide a high standard of care for terminally ill children and their families, the self-contained building features patient and family accommodation suites, treatment rooms, spa, as well as administration facilities and reception rooms.

ASSA worked closely with Spiller to ensure that patients and visitors had freedom of access around the building, but that this was carefully balanced with security for both the patients and staff. Supplying a masterkey system, modular lockcases, door furniture, remote door monitoring systems and standalone electronic locks, all helped to meet this brief.

The masterkey system featured patent protected ASSA twin combi cylinders to provide added peace of mind as well as improved key management for the building owner and users.

Both Codoor and Solicode access control systems from ASSA, were used by Spiller throughout the impressive hospice, whilst designated escape doors were incorporated within the monitoring system with single action egress, ensuring the building met with all the relevant fire safety standards.

In addition, external doors incorporated both deadbolt monitoring by means of dual pole microswitches housed within the lockcase body, as well as door position monitoring. This provides a clear indication of each doors’ status and vulnerability – valuable information for overseeing patient access and security.

Speaking on the award-winning project, Mike Trowbridge from Spiller Architectural Ironmongery Ltd, said:
“Little Harbour is an impressive project, which provides a vital service for the South West. Given the importance of the development it was crucial that we were able to supply products and solutions that met with the building’s demands, as well as the latest legislation. ASSA products enabled us to do this.

“The masterkey system and remote access control systems in particular, are vital in achieving the balance between access and security, whilst also creating management efficiencies for the building’s owners.”

Paul Johnson, Commercial Manager, from ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, added:
“The quality of the ASSA solutions supplied by Spiller more than justifies the prestigious award and were very pleased to be a part of this project. Working with Spiller has helped to ensure that a holistic specification solution has been supplied, which works with the building’s design and structure, whilst facilitating the needs of the patients, visitors and staff.”

Bimstore Builds Its Presence With Support Of Major Manufacturers

bimstore’s Adam Ward and Gillian Smith.

LEADING building information modelling (BIM) content host, bimstore.co.uk has recently secured a number of contracts with major manufacturers from across the construction industry.

The last 12 months for bimstore.co.uk, part of national technology and design business _space group, have seen impressive take-up by manufacturers due to the growing influence of BIM in the supply chain.

Knauf Insulation, the UK’s leading insulation company, selected bimstore to host their unrivalled range of products to the BIM community. The content is now live on bimstore in five different formats including Revit, Vectorworks, IFC and AutoCAD.

A contract with DORMA, the world market leader in premium access solutions and services, was also secured by Bimstore to create and host its content. The company’s door systems are now available on both the DORMA website and BIM directory.

DORMA’s Marketing & Sales Director Craig Gilmour commented:
“It was a natural progression to take our range of access systems onto Bimstore as the need to be BIM-accessible is growing considerably. It is important for us to stay ahead of the curve and we believe our decision to have products hosted on our website dorma.com and bimstore.co.uk will allow us to do just that.”

Bimstore partnership manager Gillian Smith said:
“We are thrilled that DORMA has chosen to partner with us as the company is the leading manufacturer in its field. We are certain that this will pave the way for others in the sector that are looking to DORMA as a prime example.”

Curtain walling companies, Technal and AluK have also selected bimstore’s services for their expertise in content creation and hosting services – with AluK being the first curtain walling company to have RIBA accreditation on their BIM CPD presentation. bimstore is currently working with a further two curtain walling companies to create their content.

Gillian continued:
“Our offer on bimstore is ever-diversifying with manufacturers from within the mechanical, electrical and plumbing services (MEP), through to interiors and structural sectors of the market.

“We are now competing for and securing contracts on a global level. Having recently been selected as the only UK company invited to submit a proposal to a global manufacturer for content creation, we were delighted to subsequently win the contract and look forward to announcing another UK first of BIM families on bimstore very soon.

“We will continue to invest in our technologies and will be launching additional services on the site in the New Year to further improve data integration and strengthen our position in the industry.”
