ADIA Announce Date of their 2018 AGM

At Annual General Meetings, The Automatic Door Installation Association share company insights with their members, the past year’s developments and the outlook going forward.

In addition, it is the perfect opportunity to give your views on what you want to see from the association.

Their 2018 AGM will be the fifth held. It is urged that a representative attends on behalf of your company. And not just to be sold products but to see how the industry is moving forward. Here are four important reasons why:

Meeting the ADIA Team

Coming face to face with ADIA representatives gives you and your company the perfect opportunity to voice your opinion on matters that you’re concerned with or wish to improve. This can be done during networking opportunities or during the meeting itself to offer others to chance to discuss the matters raised.

Sometimes emails and surveys just don’t hit the mark, so if you have something to say, come along!

Time to Relax.... Whilst Working

This is a perfect time to familiarise yourself with other attendees in an informal capacity whilst enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the Hellidon Lakes Hotel.

The free wine and beer are also very much appreciated in the evening before a delicious three-course meal!

The next day, we give members the enjoyment of a lay-in before coming down for breakfast and unlimited tea and coffee. Once signed into the meeting, you can network with other attendees whilst observing the items suppliers have brought with them to demonstrate to potential customers.

And who doesn’t like a good buffet? The meeting is finished with delicious options for you to enjoy before heading home.

New Business Opportunities

For suppliers, it can be that you will meet someone who will want to buy your product. Alternatively, it could be the chance for Installers to find a new system that will help improve their installations.

Whatever your aim, meeting other business can always push for collaborations, additional sales and a chance to take your company to the next level.

Find out the Future of the Association

Going to the Annual General Meeting will give you an insight to what we have coming up in the association as well as how we will be improving our services. This gives you the possibility to ask questions and keep up to date with future goings on. This will allow you to retrieve first-hand information that you won’t necessarily get on a press release.

Overall, being able to meet other members as well as the ADIA staff, you will not only be fed but you will have a step ahead of your competitors. Once you leave the meeting you will feel informed and be able to take away a wealth of information on how you can take your company to the next level.

Assa Abloy Security Solutions unveils stylish new design to its DC700G Door Closer range

Assa Abloy Security Solutions has introduced its stylish and distinctive new cover design to the high-quality DC700G range.

The DC700G-CM features Close-Motion® technology to ensure doors close quietly, while the DC700G-FT includes an integrated escape door locking solution that can be easily retrofitted to fire doors, without risking certification. Both door closers are available in the new contemporary design for the DC700G range, which signifies the next step in the evolution of the company’s extensive door closer portfolio.

The DC700G-CM combines security, accessibility and comfort in one door closer. Many environments require a secure closing that is often so forceful that the door can be noisy and disruptive when shutting. Typically, increased sealing and noise protection components are required to ensure the door closes quietly.

Close-Motion® technology ensures doors close securely while significantly reducing closing noise too. As an added benefit this also dramatically reduces the finger trap force at the leading edge. This makes the DC700G an effective solution for locations where finger trapping could be a real issue, such as nurseries, early year centres, pre-schools, hospitals and elderly care homes.

Close-Motion® is integrated into the housing of the DC700G-CM, without the need for any separate components, for a sleek, modern design. The backcheck and opening speed of the door closer can also be easily controlled, and retrofitting can be performed on existing doors with a DIN drilling pattern.

The DC700G-CM can be installed on single and double leaf doors, and can be easily integrated to work in conjunction with existing Access Control Systems as the DC700G-CM delivers assured, silent and safe closing.

Meanwhile, the DC700G-FT allows any fire or non-fire rated door to be retrofitted with an electrical locking mechanism. With no morticing or rebating required because the door closer, lock and wiring is all surface mounted, sites do not need to be concerned that the installation will risk a fire door’s certification, or create a lot of mess or disruption. In addition, the locking mechanism releases under its full rated load, so is safe for use on escape ways, stair cores or final escape doors.

The door closer features Cam-Motion® technology, ensuring the door is light to open while retaining its closing power and so meeting both opening force detailed in BS 8300-2:2018, and necessary fire closing force requirements. This is in line with the Equality Act 2010 and Approved Document M and B.

The DC700G-FT also comes with thermodynamic and adjustable valves to accommodate changes in temperature and ensure the closer can be installed in a variety of environments, and still meet the end user’s requirements.

David Hindle, Head of Door Closer Sales at Assa Abloy, said:
“Our DC700G-CM and DC700G-FT provide best-in-class closing technology, offering simple but tested solutions to common problems. Whether it’s delivering silent or safe closing operation, security, or simply making sure a fire door’s certification is not compromised when fitting a new door closer, both variants are designed to meet our customers’ needs.
“While offered in a stylish new design, the DC700G range still retains the same levels of quality, durability and innovation that installers and businesses have come to expect from our door control offering.”

To discuss the DC700G range with our door closer expert, please contact David Hindle via email at david.hindle@assaabloy.com or follow David on LinkedIn, for further information on the door closer range.

Pocket Doors – An Ever-Increasing Trend

As the number of first time buyers hits the highest levels in over a decade, combined with a major decrease in the size of the average new build home – it’s no wonder homeowners are looking for inventive and innovative ways to save space in the home.

In this feature, Stephanie Lee, Marketing Manager at P C Henderson takes a look at the reasons behind the ever growing trend in Pocket Doors, the advantages they hold and what to look for when choosing such a system.

A recent report¹ by LABC Warranty shows that living rooms of new builds in Britain are 32% smaller than they were in the 1970s. To coincide with this, a report² from UK Finance shows that the number of first time buyers is at its highest point in over a decade – a total of over 365,000 individuals bought their first home in 2017, the highest it’s been since 2006.

These recent statistics could explain the ever growing trend in Pocket Door systems as homeowners look for new ways to save space in the home...

Space Saving

Did you know that a traditional swing door can eat up to 10 or more square feet of precious floor area? This is a considerable amount of space for the sake of opening and closing a door. A Pocket Door system can free up this space by allowing doors to glide along a track and disappear into a cavity wall out of the way.

Single Pocket Doors used in smaller rooms hold the most space saving benefits. For example spaces such as en-suites, bathrooms, storage areas, walk-in wardrobes, utility rooms and pantries – can all reap fantastic benefits from a sliding Pocket Door.  Swing doors can often be inconvenient in spaces such as this, causing difficulties when attempting to open a door inwards.

Swing doors can also be inconvenient in areas where they open onto a narrow corridor or hallway, often causing an obstruction. Pocket doors can solve this by sliding away into the cavity – leaving the corridor completely clear.

Flexible Living

Double Pocket Doors on the other hand are a great way to add a little grandeur and ‘wow factor’ to a room or to help break off rooms in an open plan design - for example when used between a kitchen and living room. In olden days Pocket Doors were often used in this way – remaining open during the day and for the serving of meals, then being closed for privacy on an evening for dinner parties.

Ease of access is also another notable benefit of Pocket Doors, a person living with mobility issues may find a swing door difficult to manoeuvre through, particularly when using a wheelchair. Pocket Doors create a completely clear opening allowing for easy movement from room to room.

Aesthetics

If you’d like to add some architectural charm to a room, Pocket Doors are a great way to do this - particularly when combined with the correct type of door. Hardware can be combined with wooden or glass paneled doors enabling homeowners to create a traditional or contemporary appearance, depending on the existing décor. They’re also a great feature to show off when giving a home tour and can also help attract potential buyers.

Choosing the Right Hardware

There are a number of factors which must be taken into consideration when choosing a Pocket Door kit. First of all it’s important to choose a kit which effectively accommodates the weight, height and width of a door. P C Henderson’s system can cater for doors weighing up to 60kg and is available in five kit variants to cater for different door measurements.

It’s also important to understand how the kit works within the cavity - are the uprights made out of wood or aluminium? This is a question of particular importance in areas of heavy use. P C Henderson will soon be introducing a new ‘Pocket Door Pro’ kit which features aluminium uprights in order to better cater for heavy use applications - as well as being able to cater for heavier doors (up to 120kg).

It should also be considered whether any extra features are required to add to the refinement of the product. A soft close system is able to be purchased as an accessory in order to gently decelerate the door into an open or closed position – this minimises slamming which can add to the lifespan of the product.

For the upmost in sophistication, P C Henderson will soon be launching an Automated Pocket Door kit which can be activated by the push of a button, remote or even motion detector. In certain applications a fire rated system may be necessary, another option to consider.

Quality Manufacturing

Alongside practical factors such as door weight, size, and the availability of accessories – it’s also important to choose a reliable and experienced manufacturer. When it comes to door hardware, quality is of the upmost importance – if you think about how many times a door can be open and closed in its lifetime it’s important to choose a system which is robust enough to cope with this.  A good piece of hardware should most certainly outlive the lifespan of its owner.

All of P C Henderson’s products come with a 10 year guarantee and have been tested to over 100,000 cycles. A Pocket Door installation video is also available which provides a step by step walk through of how to install the product.

Hazel Chapman and the 100,000th Lotus in 70th celebrations

Hazel Chapman and the Jim Clark Trust special edition Evora GT410 Sport

Joining the celebrations for one of the world’s most iconic sports car manufacturers, the widow of company founder Colin Chapman has personally approved the 100,000th Lotus, as part of the marque’s 70th anniversary celebration.

Hand built on the same site that Hazel Chapman helped establish, the Jim Clark Trust special edition Lotus Evora GT410 Sport is the 100,000th Lotus built and a milestone in the iconic British company’s history.

Hazel Chapman and son Clive (Managing Director of Classic Team Lotus)

Reviewing the car for the first time with her son Clive Chapman, Hazel Chapman said:
“70 years ago, I never dreamt that there would be a 100,000th Lotus. I’m immensely proud of the company and Colin’s legacy. Today Lotus still builds such fantastic sports cars and I’m touched to be able to see the 100,000th car.”
The Evora continues a lineage of lightweight car design that can trace its roots back to the very first Lotus - an ethos that drives the company to optimise mass and aerodynamics in order to maximise performance and handling.

In 1948 Colin Chapman built his first competition car, following his own theories for improved performance. He formed Lotus Engineering in 1952 and from there the company continued to innovate in both road and race cars. Changing the very nature and intent of vehicle design forever, Chapman was in the vanguard of a new way of thinking and his principles remain as relevant today as they were 70 years ago.

Hazel was the first investor in Lotus. Loaning her then boyfriend Colin the £50 he needed to establish Lotus Engineering in a lock-up borrowed from Hazel’s parents. Colin Chapman re-imagined and re-engineered an Austin Seven to create the first Lotus – the Mark I.

Built by hand, and with Hazel helping where needed, Colin completed the car in the spring of 1948 and immediately entered it in competitive trials. With Hazel in the passenger seat and Colin behind the wheel, they picked up two class awards in the Mark I’s first events.

Hazel Chapman and the Jim Clark Trust special edition Evora GT410 Sport

From that small garage on the outskirts of London sprang a global brand and Hazel worked alongside Colin as the business grew and found fame. She was even instrumental in establishing the company’s current site in Hethel, working on the layout and design, as the old airbase was rebuilt as the Lotus headquarters and manufacturing facility.

A fitting tribute to one of the most successful racing drivers of all time, the 100,000th Lotus Evora GT410 Sport is a one-off produced in collaboration with the Jim Clark Trust, which has launched a competition to win the landmark Lotus while raising funds to help complete its new museum. Inspired by the very first Lotus Elan, driven by Clark in the 1960s, the new Evora was conceived and constructed at the famous Hethel site – the home of the company for the last 50 years.

Commissioned to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Clark’s tragic death while competing at Hockenheim in 1968, the 100,000th Lotus was unveiled at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. Echoing the original Lotus Elan’s colour scheme, with red paintwork, a silver roof and silver wheels, plus tartan upholstery, it commemorates the legacy of the one of motorsport’s most enduring figures.

About the Evora GT410 Sport

Launched in Lotus’ 70th year, the Evora GT410 Sport is a winning blend of raw ability and style. Drawing from its more potent stablemate, the Evora GT430, it incorporates many high-performance elements yet retains a subtler, understated profile.

Forged though a process of continual evolution, the Evora GT410 Sport incorporates specifically designed composite front and rear body panels and advanced aerodynamics, so that the GT-class coupe generates up to 96kg of downforce. As with all high-performance Evoras, visible-weave carbon fibre plays a considerable role in the car’s construction, enabling a lightest possible dry weight of just 1,256 kg.

The Evora GT410 Sport is powered by a specially calibrated version of Lotus’ supercharged, 3.5-litre 6-cylinder engine. With an integrated water-to-air charge cooler, it produces 410 hp at 7000 rpm and 420 Nm of torque from 3500 rpm, allowing the Evora GT410 Sport to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds

As an alternative to Lotus’ slick, six-speed manual gearbox, with a Torsen type limited slip differential (LSD), the Evora GT410 Sport can be ordered with an automatic transmission, which is slightly quicker through the gears. The six-speed auto gearbox utilises an optimised ECU for ultra-fast changes and gear selection is made via lightweight aluminium paddles mounted to the steering wheel.

Modern Refurbishment with Black Millwork

An impressive detached property in Berkshire has undergone an extensive refurbishment and extension to create generously proportioned modern family home using Andersen windows and doors supplied by Black Millwork.

The three-bedroom 1960s property has been completely transformed into a contemporary four-bedroom home. The renovation and extension has seen the total square footage increase and included the remodelling of the exterior envelope and expansion of many of the window and door openings.

The owners of the property commented:
“The entire project took approximately 10 months to complete and the result is amazing, you wouldn’t recognise the house now that it is complete.
“Central to the project has been the fenestration choice, not only were we after windows and doors that matched the modern style we wanted but we needed them to perform efficiently too – particularly because we were increasing the amount of glazing to maximise the amount of natural light coming in to the property.”
Installed at the property were 37 Andersen 400-series casement windows finished in white Perma-Shield and two sets of Andersen sliding doors finished in black Perma-Shield, both of which never need to be repainted. Their design and practicality are matched by impressive thermal energy efficiency ratings as well, achieving a U-value of 1.4 W/m2K.

The owners added:
“Black Millwork had been recommended by a friend and we found them really easy to work with. Bob Heller, the National Sales Manager, was always happy to come to site and answer our questions and helped us right from the start of the specification process.
“We knew that we wanted timber framed units but what we really liked about the Andersen products were their slim frames, their minimal maintenance requirements and the fact that they came in on budget.”

Also installed at the property was a unique entrance door with full-length side glazing units. Benefitting from a comprehensive 10-year warranty, the door achieves a U-value of 1.1 W/m2K.

The owners continued:
“We are particularly proud of the main entrance door as, along with the new built-out porch, it creates a real focal point for the front of the house. The symmetry of the property either side of the door draws your eye in to the porch and then the quality and detail of the door really stands out. We can’t wait to add some accent lighting and planting to this area to make it even more eye-catching!
“The windows and doors have had a dramatic affect on the external appearance of the house and look very modern and high-end, just what we wanted. There is no question that the project has been a challenge but the reward makes it all worthwhile and we cannot wait to move in. Having suppliers that you can trust and that are willing to go the extra mile makes all the difference.”
