Our 2012 Media Pack Has Been Published

We are pleased to inform you that our 2012 Media Pack is now available to view or download from our website.

Good News - Despite ever increasing costs, we have managed to reduce many of our advertising rates and have also introduced some new advert sizes at economical rates to assist advertisers with reduced budgets.

Editorial - We are continuing our policy of offering advertisers a generous space allowance with their advertising package. However, to address the issue of providing free space for items from other sources, we have introduced a new policy. We will now publish free of charge newsworthy items from all sources, advertisers or non-advertisers, but anything of a commercial nature will now be featured on a chargeable basis at beneficial rates - see next item.

Product & Literature Features - Within each section of the magazine we are now providing prominent coverage for new products and literature, at beneficial rates to allow non-advertisers to gain coverage without taking a display advertising package.

Classified Advertising - Following several requests we have introduced a Classified Advertising section to attract advertising from product and service providers to the door and gate industry.

Recruitment Advertising - To help you find high flyers, we have added recruitment advertising to our offering at competitive rates, which also include free online advertising until the position is filled.

We hope you will find the changes outlined above useful, however, to see everything we have to offer in the Media Pack, such as direct mail and leaflet insertion, download or view your copy now.

With the Risk of Snow - A Wheeled Snow Shovel Could Make Clearing up a Breeze

A Wheeled Snow Shovel ? - The 'Sno Wovel': the world’s safest snow shovel is now being used by Edinburgh City Council.

Meteorologists are now predicting very severe wintery conditions for the coming month in which high levels of snow are predicted to fall in the UK.

Last winters’ heavy snow fall saw the UK grind to a halt. Households, Schools, Airports, Hospitals & Crematoria were unable to clear their paths, driveways and pavements, for many days and even weeks. Apart from the immense inconvenience caused, the snow was also directly responsible for another record number of snow related falls, accidents and back strained injuries which saw hospital A&E departments nationwide struggling to cope. The innovative and award-winning wheeled snow shovel, the 'SnoWovel' (www.wovel.co.uk) comes as a timely godsend.

The SnoWovel is a revolutionary concept. A 'wheeled snow shovel' that not only works three times faster than traditional shovelling but with significantly less effort or risk of back injury. Designed and manufactured in the US the Sno Wovel has already scooped up a string of awards including TIME Magazine's 'Innovation of the Year Award'. Now it is available in the UK exclusively from the sole importers & distributor: Source2010 Ltd (www.thesource2010.co.uk).

The Sno Wovel is robustly built with a powder coated mild steel frame and High Impact Polypropylene wheel and shovel, that will clear all types of snow, from light and powdery to wet and heavy, including ice. Capable of clearing large areas quickly, its use is not confined to just domestic households. This winter it is being used by Edinburgh City Council & Bridgnorth City Council among others, and has proved the ideal snow clearing solution for high streets, school, shopping centres, airports, hospitals, airports and supermarket car parks and other public areas.

The Green Deal and the Death of the Letterbox?

The Green Deal is going to make thermal efficiency of entrance doors a key selling point. Better insulated, weather-sealed doors are an opportunity for householders to improve their homes and save money.
As we strive for lower u values there is one element of the British front door that is at odds with the desire for better insulation, the letterbox.  The classic styles in Hörmann's ThermoPro range of entrance doors have been created specifically for the UK market and and as such feature a letterbox. However, the vast majority of the precision engineered entrance doors Hörmann produce each year, do not.

As an example, the range topping Top Prestige Plus aluminium entrance doors are effectively made to order for a precision fit.  They offer a thermal u value of only 1.1 Wm2/k are highly secure and weather-sealed. They are built from an impressive range of options including 24 difference glazing styles, a wide selection of handles, and even a unique twin coloured option. The one option you don't have is a letterbox.

As energy costs continue to rise the wisdom in cutting a hole in a highly insulated door could make the traditional letterbox a thing of the past.

DHF spells out implications of doorset CE marking to architects and specifiers

DHF members who make metal and timber doorsets are gearing up for big changes which are approaching concerning CE marking.

From July 1, 2013 it will become a criminal offence under the Construction Products Regulation to place a construction product covered by a harmonised technical specification - such as doorset - onto the market without a CE mark.

At the moment, CE marking of construction products, including doorsets, is governed by the Construction Products Directive (CPD). And the UK (along with Sweden and Ireland) regards CE marking of construction products as voluntary. From 2013 when the CPD is replaced by the new Construction Products Regulation, CE marking will be compulsory in all EU countries.

The DHF is actively encouraging its members to face up to the CPR challenge and is helping them to derive commercial benefit from the new legislation.

One way they are doing this is by improving communications between federation members and the architect and specifiers who choose their door and hardware products for their projects.

The DHF is working with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) to provide information and support to architects and specifiers via their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme. CPD offers RIBA members the chance to stay up to date and learn new skills. They do this by receiving information from organisations such as the DHF.

Writing on the wall for paper VAT returns

HMRC is reminding VAT-registered businesses that all VAT returns must be submitted online from this spring, meaning paper returns will soon be a thing of the past.

Currently, only newly-registered businesses and those with turnovers of more than £100,000 have to submit their VAT online, as well as pay electronically. Anyone else can send HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) a paper VAT return, if they wish.

That is changing from April, when all 1.9 million VAT-registered businesses in the UK will have to submit their VAT returns online, and pay electronically, for accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2012.

Every VAT-registered trader not already required to submit online will receive a letter from HMRC in February, advising them of the change, and what steps they need to take.

To submit your VAT return online, you need to be registered and enrolled for HMRC’s VAT Online Service. To do this, visit www.online.hmrc.gov.uk and click “Register” under the “New user” section. Then follow the instructions.

Online filing has a number of benefits, compared to paper filing:

•    an automatic acknowledgement that your return has been received;

•    a handy sum checker; and

•    an email alert to remind you when your next online return is due (as, after April, HMRC will stop sending out paper returns to customers who are now required to submit online).

For details on the support available to help you move from paper to online VAT returns, visit www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/online-return-help.pdf

Further help and advice is available from HMRC’s website at www.hmrc.gov.uk/vatonline. If that doesn’t answer your question, call the VAT Online Services Helpdesk on 0845 010 8500 (available between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday).

Customers Go Online to Choose their Ideal Domestic Garage Door

Potential domestic garage door customers are increasingly turning to the DHF's new consumer advice section on the DHF website www.dhfonline.org.uk to help them make the right choice of garage door product and installer.

On the site they can get expert guidance on types of garage door available, browse manufacturers' brochures and even locate their nearest DHF garage door installer.

In the few short months that the microsite has been live on the main DHF website, the number of visitors has been steadily increasing. Latest figures into the number of hits show that more than half of the visitors stay on the site, browsing round all the sections, an encouraging statistic considering that many websites have much higher "bounce rates" - in other words, visitors who immediately leave a website straight after arrival.

The most popular section on the DHF garage door microsite is the "find an installer" facility. This shows they have serious intent in changing their garage door and want to know which installation companies are local to them. In fact more than 25 per cent of site visitors checked out local installers, accessed information on garage door types and downloaded DHF member company brochures.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO LEBGUD UK

Legbud has now been trading in the UK for just over a year!  Yes, that is one year of "smart-pass" wicket doors, and retractables on a 60mm frame.  That's not to mention the innovative range of Thermo Premium insulated doors, which have assisted many end-users in the new Government-drive to insulate our homes

The insulated panel of the Thermo Premium door has a U value of 1.5 W/m2K that compares very favourably to a sectional door. Top and side seals combine with an integral threshold to provide the all-important barrier to the elements around the door panel.

Each door is pre-framed, has retractable operating gear and is stocked in six standard sizes. The wide ribbed vertical and horizontal designs are simply stunning and the choice of white, golden oak and walnut effect wood laminates and metallic black and graphite really add impact.

The Thermo Premium doors are just one strand of a range that covers steel and timber up and over doors, steel side hinged doors, steel personnel doors and, another innovative product, the up and over door with a built in "Smartpass" wicket door. Wicket doors have always been in demand but effectively priced out of reach for the mass market - no more - a 7'0"x7'0" up and over door with "Smartpass" lists at just £710 excluding VAT and delivery.

For more information on this innovative range; birthday pricing offers; and brochures contact Matthew Berry of Legbud UK on 07900943262, Legbud UK on 0121 749 3699 or visit www.legbud.co.uk.

Beat the Burglar with Garador

In the last few months, crime figures have featured on the national news agenda showing domestic burglaries in the UK have risen by 3 per cent since 2008. Every 37 seconds, a home somewhere is burgled and each year there are more than one million burglaries and attempted burglaries.*

Besides the entrance door, the garage door is one of the key elements of your property. Garador's FrontGuard entrance door and range of Up and Over garage doors with multi-point locking make the ideal combination for ensuring properties are secure yet remain stylish.

Simon Hipgrave, Garador's MD, explained:  "When looking into securing a property a lot of people focus on their front door and windows as they don't see the garage door as a priority. This could be down to garages often being used for storage and other uses other than for parking cars, but an unsecure garage door can provide easy access into a residential property.

"As a key element of your property the garage door should offer great kerb appeal but at Garador we also believe home owners should receive safety, security and convenience. Garador products are manufactured in Britain using German engineering that creates designs that last for years with the right care and attention along the way."

All FrontGuard entrance doors offer 8-point locking, a deadbolt lock and further multiple latching mechanisms to ensure the door is reliably tight against the frame for extra safety from unauthorised access. Garador also offers a wide range of up-and-over garage doors with multi-point locking designed to deliver convenience, safety and security to homes.

Ranging from classic to modern, the FrontGuard entrance doors are available in many appealing designs. Garador FrontGuard doors are amongst the best insulated doors in Europe and in combination with their high build quality will save energy and money for many years.

Teckentrup Depot gets into a flap!

The team at the Teckentrup Depot are masters of the unexpected and the challenging.

"We're used to difficult applications from our customers - one of the many reasons people like dealing with Teckentrup is because we like to find away of saying yes!" said Jim Rodger, Teckentrup's Sales Director.

"We were, however, a little taken aback by the request from Chamberlain Doors to come up with a solution to make a cat flap in a garage side door a design feature rather than a design disaster!" continued Jim.

The solution Teckentrup Depot came up with went down well with their customer ...and the kitty concerned. The finish of the door and the use of the newly introduced round porthole Polyurethane windows to the top three panels of the solid design blended purrfectly with the catflap - now a discrete and stylish feline entry!

The side hinged door is part of Teckentrup Depot's recently launched side hinged range of doors - for more details visit the Teckentrup website or contact Jim Rodger on 01925 924050.

Woodrite's Balmoral Range Opens The Gates!

Woodrite has settled on a name for its new range of solid timber doors - "Balmoral". The range is in its final stages of pre-production for launch early in the New Year.

"We've set a new launch date for all the right reasons" Said John Brooks, the man behind the "Good With Wood" team "We were developing a range of panel designs and it soon became apparent that we could offer not only new designs, but most of the existing styles in a solid build - solid wood dispenses with the need for a steel chassis and produces a superb door that is not only beautifully made with morticed joints, but looks stunning from the inside too. We can't wait to get these new doors out into the market!"

As the project developed the Woodrite team extended the brief to include gates "The opportunity to give our customers access to a range of top quality gates has always been part of our plan and with the solid garage door range we'll have the ability to offer a driveway package" Commented Sharon Cleaver, Woodrite's Sales Director. "Did I mention the range of Oak doors? No? Well, watch this space" added Sharon! A busy new year ahead for the Woodrite team!

DHF award marks Tony Fitzpatrick’s outstanding contribution to the industry

The first award designed to honour excellence in the UK door and hardware industry has been presented to Tony Fitzpatrick.

His commitment to the door and hardware industry since he set up his own company in 1983 is recognised by the Door & Hardware Federation David Whitworth Award.

At the award presentation ceremony, David Whitworth said: “The DHF decided to set up an annual award scheme to recognise individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the industry - it’s fitting that Tony should receive the first award.

“His reputation for the commitment and support he gives the industry has been well earned. The industry has benefited greatly from his enthusiasm and dedication.”

He noted that Tony set up his hinged metal doorset company, Doors and Hardware Ltd, in 1983. It was in 1989 that Tony joined the DHF and he has been a leading figure within the DHF since, holding the post of DHF Metal Doorset Forum chairman for a number of years.

Hörmann's Roll Call

Hörmann are investing in additional production capacity for the RollMatic roller door at their Amshausen plant. The new production hall will help to maintain short lead times, as demand for this premium product continues to rise across Europe.

Additional sizes, external fitment options and more competitive pricing have all combined to accelerate sales. The consummate ease with which RollMatic can be fitted is also driving more sales as installers gain confidence in selling the benefits that RollMatic offers. Wind locks as standard and the smooth operation of the door, due to Hörmann's patented tension spring technology, are the key factors that installers continually point to that help them to sell this door.

Precision engineering, attention to detail and the barrel cover included, are all aspects that make ordering and installation easier, while delivering real value for money to the end consumer.

Sales outside the UK, particularly in Spain and Portugal, are also boosted as RollMatic is being chosen as a better looking alternative to traditional shutters for retail developments.

Alnatura Choose Hörmann for Sustainable Build

In what is effectively a pilot project for the German Sustainable Building Council, Hörmann has designed and installed 40 loading bays on a new 220,000 sq ft distribution centre for organic food giant Alnatura.

Geothermal energy is used to warm the offices in winter and operate the air conditioning in summer. In the warehouse, air/water heat pumps are used to warm the floor which acts like a large radiator. To maximise the benefits of the renewable energy heat transfer throughout the building is carefully controlled. Loading bays are critical in this regard so Hörmann SPU40 insulated, sectional doors have been selected.

These doors also feature compound double glazing panels to allow in natural light yet maintain the high levels of thermal insulation these doors provide. On the exterior, in order to keep out cold winter and hot summer air, cushion dock seals with fixed top cushions create a seal between containers and the building. One of the key elements of the loading bay design is the use of Hörmann HTL-2 dock levellers with telescopic lips,  that allow the insulated doors to close in front of the dock levellers. Thermal transfer through the metal leveller is therefore significantly reduced, a technique initially developed by Hörmann for chilled and cold storage applications.

SWS UK Security Shutters Offering a Different Approach

With the riots last Summer bringing the issue of commercial security into the main stream, many viewpoints have been put forward about the use of security shutters.

As an ambassador for these products many companies will look to you for guidance as to what is available. As the manufacturer of security shutters, SWS UK would like to remind you of the alternative ways forward with this controversial issue which we hope will appease all sides and secure you the order.

With the streets awash with looting and vandalism a cry was put out that business owners should have the right to protect their property. In fact the DCLG Chief Planner Steve Quartermain wrote to local councils urging them to speed through planning applications on rebuilding work and new security shutters which was met with rejoice from the shop owners. However his letter also insists upon "ensuring that a balance is struck between security and protecting the look and character of our high street" So where do we go from here? Business owner and insurance companies are insisting on using shutters to protect their property but planning officers have an obligation to keep the high street an inviting and welcoming place to be day and night.

When tendering for physical security products remember it doesn't all have to be cold steel shutters as alternative options for commercial security are available.  SWS UK hope these will tick the boxes with the retailers and the insurance companies whilst still allowing the high street to be a welcoming place.

Dream turns into Multi Million Pound Turnover Company in less than Five Years

The DHF counts many growing and successful companies within its membership. This article taken from their members' only publication, Inside Track profiles DHF member company 1st Access UK which is clearly on the success trail, despite one of the deepest recessions in living memory.

In July, 2006, 1st Access UK Ltd was the dream of Vikki Lindop, who worked for a Shopfront and Shutter company, and her partner Jason Loydon, a Full time Fire Fighter and Roller Shutter Engineer on his days off. They started the company in a top bedroom at their home with little more than a computer and a mobile phone. Six years on, Vikki and Jason, along with fellow director Les Stanton who joined them in 2008, now head up a multi million pound turnover company. It employs 30 staff and works for blue chip names including Poundland, Greggs, Ladbrokes, Co-operative Group, Boots, One stop and even Wolverhampton Wanderers & Aston Villa FC.

From its Willenhall, West Midlands base 1st Access UK designs, manufactures and installs Aluminium Shopfronts, Roller Shutters and Automatic Doors, providing customers with regional and national service.

Such has been the success and dramatic growth of 1st Access UK that the company has had to move twice in the last 5 years and is now considering yet another move.

So what are the secrets of their success? Vikki says customers benefit from a quality product manufactured and fitted in days rather than weeks and with its genuine 24 hour Service and Maintenance department, employing its own fabricators, engineers and site technicians who operate 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.
