Having good eyesight might be referred to as 20-20 vision, but in the architectural world maintaining a high level of visibility or transparency while still enjoying 60/60 fire protection is seen as an almost insurmountable challenge. Unless, that is, you are aware of DR Services’ new MetFlam offering which is suitable for fire doors and screens.
The Harlow based architectural glazing specialist is the UK’s sole provider of the well proven and fully certificated MetFlam system which complies with BS476 Part 22 and BS-EN 1634: 1999. The company offers a full design, specification, fabrication and installation service that sees the high performance doors and screens being utilized in retail, commercial and other publically accessible buildings.
Both non-fire rated and fire rated solutions are available under the MetFlam brand, though the flagship DR-yc Fire is capable of delivering up to 60 minutes integrity, and is widely recognized as the ultimate in fire glazing technology.
In common with most of DR Services work, MetFlam specifications normally concern contracts where aesthetics are considered paramount, with the slender 25 mm stiles that surround the glass being easily assimilated into properties featuring frameless glazing or structural glazing. The stiles are available in powder coated steel or stainless steel.
In an emergency situation, however, evacuation becomes the main priority and it is critical that escape routes remain usable for the full period specified.
The ‘integrity’ element to fire rating relates to the period of time that a barrier will contain flames and hot gases; but ‘insulation’ could be just as important with the amount of heat being radiated through the glass potentially making it impossible for people to pass behind.
The 60/60 rated MetFlam fire doorsets can therefore restrict the temperature rise on the protected side of the glass to 1300 degrees above ambient for a full hour; as well as containing the fire itself. And this performance can be offered on doors of up to 2500mm in height.
Delivery periods vary depending on quantity and complexity, but a turnaround of four weeks is quoted on most contracts.
